City Council - Special Meeting

I'm Alan Jones, Mayor of Winston-Salem. I call to order the special meeting of the Winston-Salem City Council and ask the City Clerk to call the roll, please.

Thank you. Would you please join the City Council and me in a moment of silence? Thank you. Would you join the City Council and me in the Pledge of Allegiance? I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you. Our sergeant in arms this afternoon is Sergeant Dime. Sergeant, thank you for being with us. We had to have this meeting today, a special call meeting, because there are two items that were approved at the most recent city council meeting that require a second reading. State law requires, if an ordinance is passed, that has a penalty to it or a fee or something of that nature to it requires a second reading. So we'll be dealing with that tonight. We'll not be in discussion on these items. We'll simply hopefully have a second reading on it. But before we get into that, we do have guests with us tonight from the Winston-Salem DASH, Brian DeAngelis, who's the executive director of DASH. He's going to tell us a little bit about July 4th, I believe.

Yes, sir. And thank you, Mr. Mayor. Thank you, members of City Council here, for having us and also collaborating with us on this once-in-a-lifetime event. It's truly very special, and we're excited to be the host of which. We have many things going on here, one of which, and I think maybe the most impressive and important, is we are going to be highlighting 13 members of our community, which are Centurions. They've lived to be over 100 years old, so it must be a pretty nice place to live if you I want to stick around that long, and you've been doing well and healthy enough to come celebrate with us. So we're excited to highlight those during the Independence Day celebration for America's 250th at the Dash. Mr. Mayor will also be joining us and presenting a proclamation, which we're excited about. And I believe he's been keeping his arm warm. We've been having some good pitching, but maybe we can get a first pitch from you as well. So we would appreciate that. Fastball. Perfect. Not only will we be playing some great baseball, which we have been doing all season long, we'll be hosting the largest fireworks show that the Dash have ever presented. This show is going to be over 20 minutes long and have the most total fireworks that we've ever shot. So the cleanup will take some time, but it's all going to be worth it in the end as well. We're excited for that. Along with having Murphy the Batdog and our Dash Sweeties doing performances in-game, we have coordinated with the local arts council here, and we have found four painters which are going to be doing a live painting to commemorate this once-in-a-generation experience here at the Dash as well. And so we're going to get four different perspectives from four different artists who will do that painting live, and then we'll have that on display for all those to see and circulate those throughout the city as well after the event. And last but not least, we will be having several different versions of entertainment for all of those in attendance. We know it's a very crowded night, as it always is historically. This is a much bigger one than normal. So all of our balloon artists, face painters, all those things will be in full effect and accessible to all those fans as well. If you don't have your tickets already for this event, please, I encourage you to get them soon as we historically sell out, and this one is going to be the biggest one we've ever had. So looking forward to seeing all of you here and everyone else in the city who wants to sail with us as well. Thank you for having us.
