I'm sorry, I can't see. Hello, everyone. My name is Meredith Hoggett. I am the Unit Coordinator and Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent at Montpomeroy County. First, I would like to thank Virginia Cooperative Extension for allowing us to explain how we can help counties to achieve the goals of the new program. So, before Virginia Cooperative Extension started, how many of you have heard about this? Okay, good. Those in the back know? Okay, good. It's good to see that, because many people don't know about us. We are called the biggest secret of Virginia. We don't want to continue as a secret, that's why I'm here today. We are in a strange situation because we are the ones who get funds from the county, state, and federal states. This is a situation where no one can fully accept us. Therefore, I would like you to get the most out of the fact that the county is not making any use of us and that you are supporting us. Virginia Cooperative Extension is operating in all counties under the name of Aamukam. This is a part of the Virginia Tech-Virginia State University. It was used as part of the Les Smith Liver Act in 1914. That's why the federal government established this institution with land grants that are long-term with the state. We have three major programs. Family and Consumer Sciences or FCS, 4H Youth Development, then Agriculture and Natural Resources or ANR, that is my name. Many people ask why an ANR agent comes and talks about this, but the specialty of food is that it unites us all, right? Whether we grow it, eat it, or use it for us or for the animals, it is right. The work of VCU is very different. It is to improve the well-being of the people of Virginia as a suburb. Our land-grant facilities are distributed to ordinary people. Thus, they can use those facilities to make use of their own lives. People, families, youths, businesses, county councils, government officials, etc. are all affected by this. We are only doing this to provide them with the information necessary to save the lives of the people. Let me see if I can go back. Oh, I'm sorry. These are the things. As I mentioned earlier, this is a very big one. VC is this authority. But this is a small example of some of the different activities we do. I'm going to talk about some of them. I can talk for hours. But don't worry, I don't have a schedule for that. I know that you won't be interested in staying here for so long. I would like to give a little information about the activities we are doing now and the activities that can be done in Bavi. It is our job to fulfill the needs of our citizens. Therefore, we proceed according to the needs of the farmers. Here are some examples. We have a clinic that examines the groundwater. We have a tradition from sale to price. In it, we teach classes on soil health, fertilizer management, and how to take care of food without damaging it. That's why there are a lot of things like water bath, pressure, freezing, etc. Then we do some different things. This is one of my favorite things I've done. That is, smartphones for smart people. We all live in a time when we use phones for a lot of things. But not everyone has the ability to make the most of that technology. That's why we started a campaign for the users to use smartphones. That's one of the things that helps me in my work. Because if a user sends me a picture from their phone, I can answer more questions. I can go to the farm, spend time, throw away money and other things, but I can either return the seeds or give instructions. That's why we organized a meeting with the volunteers, and because there were many phones, each volunteer had their own. I don't know how to operate all the phones. We taught them how to take a clear picture, how to send me an email from that picture on the phone, and other things. The pictures you see here are from a painting I gave to my volunteers. It is very interesting that we know how to focus. We also talked about the different plants that can be used by them. Therefore, this is not only agriculture, but also agriculture, food protection, health, nutrition, as well as sustainable development. Here we have chainsaw class in the lower part of the area. This is a part of our institutional equipment wise. WISE means Women Increasing Skills and Education. This is one of my favorite activities to help women. We teach them how to park a trailer, drive a tractor, use chainsaws safely, and drive a skid steer. It is very interesting. Because sometimes women do not get the opportunity to learn these things with patience. Sometimes it is difficult to study when it is necessary to do it immediately in an emergency situation. Therefore, it is good to get the opportunity to study these things with women's forgiveness. Therefore, this is a small example to show how we as our local community are behaving. We are thinking about gender equality. This is a big problem that we see in our county and nationally. The situation of food security is very dangerous. The reason for the price is that people are trying to get food. Let's talk about a grant we completed last month. For that, I cooperated with YMCU of Virginia Tech. We got $165,500. We had to buy food from the local producers who were in Wexel. They counted 400 miles as local. I said, I don't need that. We can help our people, our producers. We accepted it. It was to be distributed through local poultry centers. Within the last one and a half years, we were able to distribute 15,275 pounds of ground beef. We focused on it because it will be easily available to producers. It is also easy to share, isn't it? It is safe for young people and old people to share it and can produce a variety of products. We continued to buy 13,500 pounds more. In fact, these numbers are now more. These were the numbers in July, before completing the previous project. We now have 16,000 pound ground beef. There are 13 producers. We also gave some new financial resources. I was very happy that 94% of the beef came from farms in Montgomery County or around 35 miles from here. Through this, we have ensured that the money is being provided to our local producers and that food is being provided to all the farmers in Montgomery County. This is another example of us working with local partners. We are working together with Page Walters and Julie Fowkes. Page is a foster care contact for McKinney Window Lessons and Montgomery County Public Schools. We started preparing programs that help low-income families and low-income families to grow their families well. So this is just an example. We held our first slow cooker tasting event a few months ago. We would like to hold another one with the help of a community to reduce the number of obstacles involved. This event was very interesting. We had prepared three different crockpot events in advance, and the whole family participated. We gave them the permission to participate, then they were given day care if they needed it, and we also included four teachers to teach them a lesson for the youth. So they came, enjoyed these different events, chose what they liked the most, and they were able to take their belongings home. For each food, we calculated the budget and how many people would need it. All the food we prepared was canned food, so it was easily available in the family dollar. That's what we used to make the budget. We got a very good response about this. Our families asked us for programs for budgeting, bucket gardening, and art schools. That's why we are thinking of creating more programs for them. So, this is just one slide that I have created. This is what I have been saying to various organizations in our county this day. When people hear extension, they think of 4H or agriculture. They doubt if you can help us. The point is, we are here to fulfill your needs. So, if you ask what your needs are, we can find ways to fulfill them. Not all questions will have an answer from me. But I know a person with a good answer. Or we can help you remove things that are hindering other programs. That's why we can help with grant funding. It's not that easy for us to make a huge amount of money financially. We try to find sponsors and grants for all our programs. But we are a great educational resource that can help those grants or help them write. That's why there are many ways to help our community. This is something that you may be familiar with, because I took this from the comprehensive plan. I would like to talk a little bit about how we can help you to achieve these goals. When I saw the poster of the comprehensive plan below, I thought, oh, extension. We are adding events to it, or we know exactly who can do it. So, without doing the same old things again, I would like to do more things using the resources we have or developing them a little more. In Extension, it is very difficult for us to use resources in the best possible way. Also, we are volunteers. So, we have a lot of ways to help you. This is the 14th chapter of the Discussion. That's what we do most, isn't it? So, we can do any kind of work. That is, In reality, there are no restrictions on it. So let's take a look at the goals set by the county. I am not going to go through all of them. You will all have reviewed them many times. But I would like to point out only a few things that we are helping. Education. This is what we are doing. Budgeting, nutrition, agriculture, bird protection, conservation skills, opioid resistance, re-education, etc. We have a lot of family-oriented activities. There are many opportunities. In addition, with the help of many community members, they pass through a simulation where they act as 27-year-olds. They are given a job, then a salary, and then they are given the cost of taking care of the children. Imagine that you have three children. There is so much cost to take care of the children. This is the bill for your daily necessities. They have to learn how to handle it. I think it's a very interesting message from this. But it's very true. A child said at the end that it's a big cost to raise children. That's true. So this is a way to make them understand what the real world is like. This helps them to understand the decisions they have to make when they become adults. As I said earlier, there are skills for employment, professional education, a lot of STEM, STEM programs, and science and technology. You must have seen the kids making eggs in schools, right? Every year we do it in our office. We have grown chickens from cubs to small duck cubs. It is very interesting. Then you can see the tyre changing in this picture on the right. This is an example of the program of the class called Adulting 101 run by Southwest 4H, 4H Central. In the coming years, not only for young people, but also for old people, we want to focus our attention on these life skills. How to change a tyre? How to plug a tyre? Since I live in a farm, I like to do this. Some of our tyres will have 4 to 6 plugs. Because this is a faster solution than buying a new tyre. But these life skills that cannot be learned from parents are essential. Therefore, it is good to know the things that need to be known. Now, about healthy human consumption, I have already mentioned about food quality, right? But we want to show that NRV Thrive and NRV Thrive are working together. I forgot it. It will be seen somewhere. It would be very good if you have seen it before. NRV Thrive has a system called food access. This is a network directory. The details of all the food vendors in NRV have been included in it. They also have their own Yogyada Manathandangal. NRV is a group of people who work as food providers. We are actively involved in it. It has been a great help to get grants and to deliver food to Montgomery County. We have also operated as a community library in Meadowbrook. There we helped out with a food fridge. They were able to buy a freezer using the grants they got for ground beef. It was necessary for them to take care of the beef on that ground. So we help to deliver vegetables. After the harvest, we directly grow some vegetables. Not only that, we also have a Master Gardener program that grows vegetables for this. Then we help with our libraries and carry out many activities. Human Health and Human Services, which studies mental health, is a state-of-the-art issue. That is, I think that this is growing because people feel like they are united after Covid. There is a threefold chance that our citizens will commit suicide in the face of the public. So this is a cloud that I am very interested in. We are working with a person in Montana. He is doing a project called State of Mind. He came into the community and tried to make it happen here. He is working with community members, school students, and teachers to find ways to provide mental health services to our children and youth. They do not get any relief from this. They are just like a drama. It is one that is very beneficial. I think we can use this in many ways for our youth, for recycling processes, and for the economy. We can change this in many ways. So we are investigating about it. Then you think you will get a sticker. Why do you think you will get a sticker? This is Seed Peace, Seed Peace. This is a new labor union for New River Valley. If anyone knows about the Hoof Hard Farm, or if they have bought beef from the market, they can understand that it is a part of it. She and her father are also against this. Her brother was a farmer in Colorado. He was 40 years old and committed suicide last year. They made him the one who was responsible for the loss of his profit and the loss of their mental health. He was living in his own community and they have done it. Now they are bringing it to NRV, and this system is being built. They want to help people in Montgomery County, Pulaski County, Giles, Floyd, and Wythe County. They are not only helping these people with mental health, but also helping them with treatment costs. The aim of this is to bring them to a doctor as primary caretakers, and we expect that their mental health problems will be solved through a good relationship. Therefore, we are working to create an organization in a similar state to this. Because we are very interested in this. If we want to continue to get food, we have to protect our resources. We have to do these things until we say that this is a responsible thing. We can think about how to make changes and changes in reality. Then when it comes to public health facilities, you can think about what is the matter in the public health facilities of the Ministry of Health. That's why we have been running the Kinnar Water Test Clinic that I mentioned earlier for years. This is a long-term benefit. Moreover, once a year, the facility to test Kinnar Water will be available here in a very small amount. That's why a sample costs $70. Usually, through the subsidy we get, the price of a sample is reduced to $10. This is a very important thing to make sure that people are getting safe water.
