Visitors can enjoy an expansive wet strolling landscape where flowing waterfalls symbolizing heaven, humanity, and the earth merge with vibrant greenery and crafted stone lanterns imported from Japanese artisans. The stillness of the water offers a refuge for the spirit, mirroring the vital knowledge shared with Angelenos during a recent emergency preparedness day.

We are at the Autry Museum for the second annual Wildfire Day LA, which is an event that we put on to try to prepare Los Angeles for the next inevitable wildfire emergencies that unfortunately are destined to happen. Whether it's the wildfires here that taught us an awful lot of lessons in January 2025, or any other kind of life safety emergency, our mission now as an 18-year nonprofit organization working with the LA City Fire Department and other city partners and departments is to bridge that gap.

It's critical for everyone in the city, whether you have a business, whether you own a home, rent, that you know what to do in case of emergency. Be it a wildfire, be it an earthquake or heavy rain, Emergency preparedness is critical and I'm glad the city put on this event.

Los Angeles is actually very unique in that it has so many possible natural disasters. It has earthquakes. It has literally tsunamis. It has flooding. In fact, the major cause of weather death is heat. And as we know, with environmental concerns, we also wind up having more heat. So there is something here for everybody. So while some people might think, well, I don't live in a home in the hills, the high fire severity zone is actually moving further south into our urban areas. And Everybody is potentially affected by an emergency. We are all one emergency away from a potential personal disaster.

Wildfire Day LA is one of the many ways that we try to reach out to people, whether it's holding public events like these, and we've done 10 or more all over the city and county. Second time that we're here at the Autry, which is a great venue. We're surrounded by wild land, right? So it's a great frame for what we're trying to teach. But in any case, we try to use every conduit, every medium, every form we can to get the word out, right? We go into neighborhoods and we do home hardening assessments for free. For people that are in the brush, the canyons, the hillsides, we go into schools and teach kids how to be more fire safe. We go to build neighborhood council fire wives or fire safe council groups to organize their own neighborhoods to be more prepared.

we're here working with all the folks that are concerned about how we can be more efficient with preventing wildfire right how can we be more mindful of keeping our towns resilient and so tree people our goal is to help make our wild spaces resilient and that means that after a fire rolls through we want to bring in native plants that are going to do well and recover quickly and also withstand the shortened fire regime as well as we want to make communities aware of the benefits of native plants, right? A healthy ecosystem in the mountains is going to bring a lot more resilience to our communities just down the way. Trees and native species are going to be better suited for when we have drought. They're going to be better suited for when there is wildfire. They'll recover quickly and they're going to keep our air cycling clean. We're going to have a lot of different benefits from a healthy ecosystem. So the more we can preserve the wild space, the more our cities and our wildlife is going to be happy that we've done so. We can do our part in stewarding the land.

Wildfire safety includes a lot of things, but one of the most important things it includes is preparation, awareness, and education. We want every community in CD4 and throughout Los Angeles to understand what they can do to be ready in case of emergency, as well as how they can participate in preventing an emergency.

I would tell people to make sure that they understand where their exits are other than their front door. I would recommend that people do pack some sort of go kit, which includes their medications, identifying information of their pets, if they have them, in case they're separated. If you live in an apartment building, please make yourself aware of where the fire extinguishers are in your building. Please make sure you keep your fire alarms functioning, which also monitor for gas. And reach out to your landlord to ask them to engage in safety measures for the entire building, which also might lower their insurance costs if they engage safely on how to protect themselves.

All these things are what we're here to teach today in a way that hopefully people can deal with in an affordable and viable way so that they don't feel overwhelmed like there's so much to do, I just won't do anything. We want them to do something, do one thing, do three things over time, and over time they're gonna get in a better position to withstand a wildfire, and we know they're coming up, fortunately.

Hinson Elm Aquatic Center is very different. It's the largest municipal pool in the United States. It's 1.5 acres. Just one way, it's 153 yards. Capacity is over 3,000. Zero depth entry, so that means it's safe for old family, the little kids. It's 1.5 million gallons of water with two beautiful water slides and the obstacle course in the middle of the pool. So in the city of LA, we have over 50 swimming pools. So there's a pool near your house. From San Pedro to Sylmar, East LA, West LA, we have a pool. Not only we have a pool with well-trained lifeguards, but we have amazing programs. We do over 25,000 lessons, swim lessons, in the city of LA every year. We have over 800 kids in our Junior Life Club program, and over 6,000 kids that are part of our swim team, water polo, artistic swimming, spring boat diving. So we have an aquatics program for all Angelinos. So anytime you're on water, if you're at the lake, you're at the beach, you're at the pool, anywhere, always swim near a lifeguard. It's critical that your kids are supervised at all times. Anytime they're close to the water, you know, kids can drown in like few inches of water. So never, never leave your kids unattended. During the summer time, you know, there's a lot of friends, family, they have pool parties. There's a lot of drownings that happen in backyard pools. So as a parent, there's a lot of things that you can do at home to make sure your pools are safe. First, you gotta have a fence. Make sure you have a fence with a gate that you can lock. You gotta have an alarm. It's good to have equipment in case somebody goes in the water and whoever's watching them doesn't know how to swim. Make sure you have a ring buoy. A ring buoy can make a big difference on saving somebody's life. Where anybody can see it, grab it, and throw it to whoever's in the water struggling, whoever needs help. Knowing how to use it, how to throw it, can make a big difference. Also, a body hook. You put it on the wall next to the ring buoy, So you can reach and hook the body and bring him in. Or have somebody hold on to it that's struggling in the water and bring him in. By having those two pieces of equipment can make a big, big difference. So each facility, you know, we have a safety plan. By having well-trained lifeguards at all of our 50 plus facilities in the city of LA, our job is to educate the public in water safety. So when you come in, you have a good, safe experience. So this summer, make it a point to visit our pools and take a swim lesson. Give us a shot. Try us out.

We are in the community of Panorama City, the 91402, celebrating the re-grand opening of the Splash Pad at Panorama City Park, a park whose Splash Pad was closed for over seven summers. We're excited to see all of the kids here who live in a very high-dense community, sometimes don't have a front yard, sometimes don't have a backyard. So the park is really their only place to play.

It's been amazing. I mean, look at the smiles. They're priceless. The sounds. It brings me back to my childhood. My sister was even teary-eyed because growing up in a community where, you know, you need a little bit more resources, this is priceless.

I am overly ecstatic that we have close to 200 families here today, and we are excited to talk to the families about how we were finally able to find the resources to get it back in functioning. And I'm still overwhelmed by the amount of families that came that were waiting for this, because seven years is a long time.

So I'm a community member here and this actually started in my family when I brought my son to the park and he noticed a desolate water park and he asked me, Mom, when is this going to be open and why is it closed? And I told him, you know what, I honestly don't know, but these are great questions. We have a neighborhood watch meeting in the next few days. Why don't you ask those questions there? My son and my daughter, they collaborated. So at the meeting, she asked the questions. Unfortunately, she was told that it was going to be closed. But then a few days later, I get an email or a text saying that actually the council member had looked into it and she's going to make it happen to reopen. And here we are. And we're really grateful for this because lots of families can enjoy, especially during these hot weather. I mean, especially when things are so expensive. This is a free access to keeping cool in our community, which we definitely need it. And this shows us the collaboration that when we work together, that you're never too young to be active, to get involved, that you can make positive change at any age, and especially when we all work together.

It almost feels like we let an entire generation down taking this long, but we're not going to let this happen again, and that's why we're going to continue to fight and advocate for more funding to come to our Rec and Parks Department.

We want to continue to collaborate with the city to make sure it's safe, that our communities are clean, that they're great places for us to live, and as you can see, a good place to play as well.

Inspired by the historic strolling estates of the 18th and 19th centuries, the wet garden design employs vast lawns to foster an open and radiant setting for discovery. The grounds are open for public exploration from 9.30 a.m. until 3.30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and on the second Sunday of each month. During these Sunday sessions, the facility showcases traditional cultural artistry, performances, and family activities alongside the Bureau of Sanitation's sustainability programs. this scenic promenade offers an opportunity to observe the evolving seasons, highlighted by the radiant lotus blooms that also define the spirit of the annual Lotus Festival at Echo Park Lake.

This year here at the beautiful Echo Park Lake, we are celebrating the 45th Lotus Festival and our host country this year is Sri Lanka. So we're celebrating the culture, the people and the food of Sri Lanka.

This festival is about celebrating culture and bringing people together. So this year, when we celebrate the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, you're going to see people from all across the city of Los Angeles, all walks of life. But we're celebrating one part of the community, but also celebrating the diversity and the strength of the city of Los Angeles.

An absolutely incredible community event that brings together the various cultures and the rich heritage of us Angelenos. And today I'm so honored that it's spotlighting my country of birth and my motherland, the beautiful island of Sri Lanka.

We want to keep our culture alive and spread it to everyone else in our community as well. and let everyone else know how vibrant and how welcoming our culture is. Our food is very tasty, too.

Sri Lanka means so much to the city of Los Angeles. We have doctors, teachers, lawyers. They bring so much love and community to the city, and that's what we want to highlight today here at Echo Park, celebrating the Lotus Festival.

It's a great event full of diversity and culture. The host country this year is Sri Lanka, and we had the Consul General of Sri Lanka herself here to help celebrate the opening ceremony. We have two days of a lot of fun, food, dancing, entertainment. Having events like this is absolutely critical because we're so diverse, but it's not just diversity that makes us a great city. It's having events where people that are diverse can learn from one another and really become neighbors and partners and friends. And that's why this is so important that we celebrate this. We have so many events where people can learn about one another's countries, their heritage, culture, and that's what makes us better. It makes us a strong city.

And these types of events are so important for us as a community because it just brings together everyone from all corners of the world. We have Hispanics, we have Africans, we have South Asians like us, we have Koreans, Chinese, and we're all here together. We make up this beautiful city of Los Angeles. We are the fabric of this city.

What we're doing here is we are hosting the official World Cup LA Fan Zone. And we're going to be hosting today's match. We're going to do the third place match on Saturday and also the finals on Sunday.

It's about getting the vibe of the crowd and everything. Being with people and everyone scores a goal. It's nice. It's better than sitting at home and watching it.

I came with one of my closest friends so that we can enjoy the last games of this amazing World Cup. We both love soccer. So I was lucky enough to go to the first game, USA against Paraguay. So now it's just all about having fun for whatever's left.

We're in San Pedro. I'm rooting for England here. Come on, England. We just said, go England. I want England to win.

Today's Fan Fest, Fan Zone, is a lively crowd, good entertainment, and a great game. And we'll see who wins.

I volunteer for AYSO. And it's very meaningful for me to be here with my family. This is like my brother.

We are stoked to welcome everybody here right now. We've got such a beautiful location and we want to show it off, right? We are giving everyone a first look, not just to the space here and our LA waterfront, but also a few of our tenants are participating as well. So people can get a little bit of a taste of, you know, San Pedro Fish Market, who's actually already open down on the other end of the site, but Fresca Bar, Lazio Pizza, we've got Piranha Empanadas and Glass Box and Baked Bear. that are also here so people can get a little taste before we actually open this fall.

There's going to be a brand new visitor serving attraction down here at the Port of LA called West Harbor. So it's really important for those that knew it previously as Ports of Call to know that it has been completely redeveloped with a partnership between the port and the West Harbor developer that's going to offer all kinds of food and beverage options, shopping options, activity options. There's going to be a really big Ferris wheel here coming next year. There's going to be stuff for kids to do, kids playground area. There's going to be harbor cruises, so you can come down here and play all day, walk the mile-long promenade, and just figure out whatever you want to do with your family.

And we're just enjoying the beautiful West Harbor. I live here locally, and we haven't really seen this open to the public in this manner.

I had no idea what it would be like, but it's close. I live nearby, so I'm actually coming on Saturday with my entire family. But they opened it early, so I was like, hey, why not? Let's go. So it looks really nice. It's near the water. I love the soccer balls floating in the ocean. So it looks really nice and a safe family environment.

And bottom line is, if everybody could get along like this right here, where would be a better place?

So this week is Shark Week, and today specifically is July 14th, and July 14th is the AZA, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Shark and Ray Awareness Day. We bring specimens out from our museum collection that we normally don't have on display. Some different species of shark jaws, we have some great white shark vertebrae, we have shark skin that the public can touch, and we also have activities, giveaways, crafts, and things that the public can take that are all around appreciating sharks, and other kinds of different shark specimens that are not on permanent exhibit.

who isn't excited about sharks, especially little kids and then you grow up, who's not excited about sharks. They're almost like the dinosaurs of the day. When you grow up, that never leaves you, the love for sharks. It's free entry, that's why we come. You don't have to spend a lot of money like some of the other aquariums out there. Depending on where you park, you might have to pay for parking or not, but it's super cheap. It's a great experience. Yes, it's small, but you just come for a few hours. It's great.

We are very science-based. There's a lot of biological content that we display. So alongside the tanks, all the animals are always labeled with a scientific name and a common name. There's a lot of biological illustration showing the anatomy of an octopus or the anatomy of a shark and pointing out all the different parts and labeling it. But we're also so friendly. I love working here. The staff are amazing and everybody's willing to help out. We're very family friendly and we are children focused, but all ages are welcome and we will do anything to make sure everybody has a good time.

Life is busy, especially in a city like Los Angeles, but it can also be uncertain. A large-scale disaster like an earthquake, wildfire, or even civil unrest can happen at any time. As part of the City's Ready Your LA Neighborhood program, this video covers the basic steps that you can take during and after an emergency to keep your loved ones safe. We will review earthquake, wildfire, and active shooter scenarios. Angelinos know the big one is coming, but don't know when. It's very important to learn about earthquake safety now. If you are indoors when an earthquake strikes, drop immediately to the floor, take cover as soon as you see or feel shaking, and hold on. If there is no table nearby, sit on the floor against a wall, away from windows and tall furniture. Protect your head and neck with your arms and stay indoors until the shaking stops. If you are outside, move to a clear area and stay away from anything that could fall on you, like buildings, power lines, or trees. If you are at the beach, immediately move to higher ground and follow tsunami evacuation signs. If you are driving, pull over to a clear location and stop. Avoid bridges, overpasses, and power lines. If you are in a wheelchair, lock your wheels, bend over and cover your head. For more information, visit the Earthquake Country Alliance's website. Now onto wildfire tips. If you do not receive warning in advance of a wildfire, only collect your grab and go kit if it's safe to do so. Follow evacuation orders and help others. If moving through a smoke-filled area, stay low to the ground. If you do receive a prepare to evacuate warning, gather your loved ones and pets, ready your go bags, charge your cell phones, and plan your evacuation route. Lastly, let's talk about an active shooter situation. An active shooter is someone who is trying to kill and injure people. If you find yourself in such a situation, it's important to keep in mind the run, hide, fight survival principles. Your first option is to drop everything and run. If possible, try to help others escape, but do not attempt to move the wounded. Once you're safe, call 911. If you cannot escape, find the nearest hiding place. Lock the door or block the entry to your hiding place with tables, chairs, or whatever you can find. Make sure to silence your cell phone. If you are out of all other options, then fight. Try to incapacitate the shooter in whatever way possible. And remember, commit to your actions. Your life depends on it. Once law enforcement arrives, remain calm, follow their instructions, and keep your hands free and visible at all times. Learn more about active shooter protocols at runhidefightla.org. It's not over just yet. The aftermath of an emergency is still a crucial time for you to remain alert and aware. Stay clear of hazards like downed power lines, damaged buildings, and avoid using gas until your gas line has been inspected. Cooperate fully with public safety officials and listen to local radio and TV stations for updated information. Avoid driving during this time and only use your vehicle if there is an evacuation order. Recovery time for different emergencies varies, but conditions commonly remain unstable two hours to two days after the emergency. If you have evacuated your home, don't re-enter until officials say it's safe. If you're sheltering in place, it's important to assess and secure the area, checking for gas and water leaks or broken wiring. If there is utility damage, turn them off at the source and check with your utility company before switching them on again. Do not shut off your gas valve unless you smell or hear gas leaking. A gas leak might smell like rotten eggs. To switch off your gas, you will most likely need to take a half turn on the main valve with a wrench. Report any gas leaks to your utility company. If a gas leak is suspected, do not operate any electrical switches. If water pipes are damaged, turn off the main water valve. Be sure not to flush the toilet until you know if the sewage lines are intact. If you have to shelter in place for a long time, assess your water sources. You can use water from ice cubes, your plumbing , or your switched-off water heater. Do not drink water from the reservoir tank of your toilet, pool, or spa. Use this water for sanitary purposes only. You can also purify water with bleach with the right ratio. After adding bleach, stir the container and let it stand for 30 minutes before drinking. you now have some basic knowledge to safely respond during and after an emergency.
