Planning Commission - Regular Meeting

Good morning, my name is Matthew Cleaves and this is what's happening at City Hall. First, the Federal Street Plaza is continuing to move forward and we have a naming update. We had 68 community submissions for a total of 114 proposed names for our new plaza. The ad hoc subcommittee will be reviewing the submissions, combining similar proposals, making sure that the names reflect the Dalles' history, character, identity, or community spirit. There's no commercial, political, or promotional names. Top choices selected by the committee will move to the community for a vote later this summer. I also wanted to provide a reminder that city dog licensing is in effect and required for all dogs within city limits. The city is using a service called DocuPet, which allows you to license your dogs online, by phone or by mail. You will need a copy of your current rabies vaccination, which will also or should also have information about whether your dog has been spayed or neutered under the term altered. License fees support the Columbia Gorge Humane Society, which provides a critical service to our community and is a great partner nonprofit. The Local Government Academy is moving forward and will be offered again this fall. This academy allows individuals to learn how your local government works, how city departments operate, and how local decisions that affect all of us are made. There are different ways to participate in local government and to volunteer for different committees and commissions. Applications are open through August 14th to those living within the city and who are available for all the sessions. And then finally, we do have a fire near our municipal watershed. This is the Grasshopper Fire. We are monitoring and engaging with local response entities as it has approached the Dog River diversion point and our watershed generally. Currently, the fire is still outside the watershed boundary, but we are closely monitoring the situation and will provide additional updates to the community as things change.
