good evening city of Shawnee i'm Dyke Donahue communications director for the city bringing you the wrap-up of the city council meeting from this monday june 8th 2026. due to technical difficulties we were unable to provide a live stream of tonight's city council or council committee meetings however an audio recording will be made available at a later date Business from the floor lasted from 603 to 625. The city took the next steps in the new trail connecting Shawnee to Merriam along 62nd and 61st streets, approving an engineering services contract and acquisition of private property, both on eight to zero votes. The Council unanimously approved engineering services for the 2027 mill and overlay of Shawnee Mission Parkway from Quivira to the Shawnee East City limits. And the Council approved the contract for the McEnany Drive Street Improvement Project with Infrastructure Solutions LLC on an 8-0 vote. The Shawnee Chamber of Commerce requested an additional $62,750 to fund shortfalls and contingencies for the upcoming Americana and Ales Festival on June 20th in downtown Shawnee. The Council approved the additional funding unanimously. During Council Committee, both Community Development and Public Works presented their budgets for the 2027 year. The Community Development budget includes a slight increase from 2026 from $4.5 million to just less than $4.7 million in 2027. And the Public Works budget includes an almost $3 million increase from 2026 to 2027. That increase is due primarily to the department tackling two street improvement projects next year, rather than the traditional one, both funded through the pavement sales tax. Shawnee City offices and the Civic Center will be closed on Friday, June 19th in observance of Juneteenth. Meanwhile, the Shawnee City Council will be back in session on Monday, June 22nd, starting at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers here in City Hall.
