Good evening, city of Shaunie. I'm Doug Donahoo, communications director for the city, bringing you the wrap-up of the city council meeting from this Monday, May 11th, 2026. Business from the floor lasted from 6:03 to 6:07 p.m. And the big item on the agenda, city manager Paul Kramer presented the council with the proposed Midland Entertainment District Tax Increment Finance District. To create the district, the council needed to confirm a finding of blight in the area using a set list, and the city identified six out of nine criteria. Predominance of defective or inadequate street layout, unsanitary or unsafe conditions, deterioration of site improvements, improper subdivision or obsolete platting or land uses, existence of conditions which endanger life or property by fire or other causes, and conditions which create economic obsolescence. City Manager Kramer clarified that any and all proposed developments in the district would go through the city's established approval process. The council heard from several members of the public regarding the tip district and after discussion among the council approved the district unanimously. The council approved the special use permit for Harmony Tower to build and operate a 160 ft wireless communication tower on Monaceel Terrace in the 3 and2 baseball complex on an 8 to zero vote. The Shauny Fire Department received unanimous approval to purchase a new sidebyside utility task vehicle to respond to off-road emergencies for both fire and medical services. The regular council meeting concluded with a 25-minute long executive session before the council returned to chambers and adjourned for the evening. During council committee, outside organizations who received funding from the city presented their individual 2027 budget requests. Old Shaun Days requested $55,000 from the city. United Community Services requested $200,000. 13,000 of that coming from the alcohol

sales tax and 70,000 coming from Shaunie share of the opioid settlement towards the substance use continuum of care fund for Johnson County. The Shaunie Chamber of Commerce requested a city sponsorship of 586,227 and Visit Shaunie requested $286,650. Those requests will be considered as part of the city's ongoing 2027 budget process. City offices and the civic center will be closed on Monday, May 25th in honor of Memorial Day. And because of the holiday, the city council will meet on Tuesday, May 26th, starting at 6 p.m. in council chambers at city hall here in downtown Shaune. Of course, you can find full agendas and archive minutes on our website, city ofshaune.org.
