City Council - Special Meeting

I'll now call this City Council of the City of Pearland special meeting to order at 4 p.m. Call to order. I believe we do have a quorum, Madam Secretary, except for Councilmember Patel, all present, Councilmember Patel. Seeing that, moving on to citizen comments, I believe we do have one comment. Mayor Pro Tem, would you mind facilitating that?

Yes, thank you, Mayor. So we have one citizen comment, Jim Johnson with the Pearland Chamber of Commerce. You will have five minutes. Thank you so much for being here.

Thank you, Mayor Pro Tem Chavarria. Thank you, Council and Mayor. Jim Johnson with President and CO with the Pearland Chamber of Commerce. The Pearland Chamber wants to speak about the broader importance of this project and the type of development it represents. We support projects that create jobs, strengthen a diverse or tax base, and provide high quality places where residents, businesses, and visitors can gather. This development has the potential to create a true destination within Pearland by combining commercial activity, recreation, open spaces, and opportunities for community connection. Projects like this do more than develop property. They contribute to Pearland's quality of place and create spaces where people can meet, conduct business, and enjoy their community. That direction aligns with the Pearland Chamber's strategic plan, which emphasizes thoughtful growth, connectivity, amenities, and developments that strengthen Pearland's long-term economic vitality. We encourage the City Council to consider not only the individual components of this proposal, but also the broader community and economic benefits that a destination quality development can provide. I thank you for the time today, and since I have three minutes, 52 seconds left, I just want to again invite all of Council and the Mayor to meet the leaders with elected officials on September 23rd, taking place at the University of Houston, Clear Lake at Pearland. It's always great when we have all of y'all attend, and we hope to see you at this year's event as well. Thank you for the time today.

Consideration of possible action to authorize the city manager or his designee to enter into a development agreement as discussed in Executive Session, Prospect 2416, Acquisition of Real Property and Reimbursement Agreement between the City and the Pearland Economic Development Corporation. So moved. Second.
