As we gather to conduct business for this county, may you give us the patience and guidance to bring fair and just decisions. May we be open-minded to others' opinions as we all seek to move Maumee County forward for our residents. Amen.

And colleagues, if you would just join me at the well real quick to recognize a very special young man. All right, so good morning. So today, we want to recognize a very, very, very special young man, Lorenzo Shadid. Lorenzo Shadid is a student in District 11's Moss School, and Lorenzo actually has won third place statewide with a brilliant essay that he wrote brilliant on what he would do if he were mayor what guys it's after our jobs he should read it he should i think he should he should do you do we have a copy of the essay Lorenzo, do you mind reading it for us? So the essay I wrote began with, if I was elected mayor of Miami-Dade, I would focus on addressing the problems that affect people every day of their lives, specifically in traffic, flooding, and the increasingly high cost of living. These issues make life more difficult for students, families, and workers across our county. One major problem in Miami-Dade is the traffic. Long drives waste time, harm the air and our environment. As mayor, I would improve public transportation and redesign dangerous intersections near schools. I would use local data to decide where buses, bike lanes, and traffic changes are needed most, rather than implementing one plan for every area. Another problem is flooding, especially after the heavy rain. Neighborhoods get damaged and families worry during the hurricane season. To fix this, I would improve in drainage systems and make neighborhoods stronger so families stay safe before storms hit. The cost of living is currently very high and is pushing families out of the county. Many people who work full-time and have a 9-to-5 job still struggle to afford housing. To address this, I would invest in affordable housing and enforce strict renter protections to prevent families from being priced out of their own neighborhoods. Home rule makes all of this possible because... It allows our local officials to make local decisions. Miami-Dade has problems that need solutions created by the people who live here. I would use Home Rule to listen to the residents, take action that improves their daily life, and create a county where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Thank you.

Let's give them a round of applause. And so colleagues, I know, I mean, if any of you want to make some comments, I just want to let you know he wrote this essay and has won third place statewide. We actually have the mayor of Weston here because she has an award to give him as well from the League of Mayors. So would any of you guys like to say some words? Absolutely. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman. So Lorenzo, I'll start out with, I have a position open in my office. Yes. You seem to have captured just really brilliantly all of the issues that we struggle with as commissioners every single day for our constituents. So I just want to tell you how proud I am. You have a very bright future. If you are this kind of critical thinker today, I can only imagine what will happen when you get to college and you can really put all of this to good use as you graduate and move on. I'm just praying for greatness for you. Continue to make some strong contributions to your community and to all of us. Thank you.

Mr. Mayor, you have my vote.

so good afternoon i'm mayor brown from the city of weston but i'm also the president of league of mayors for the state of florida i want to say thank you for inviting us here today at the miami-dade board of county commissioners On behalf of the 411 mayors who make up our organization, I'm honored to be here to recognize an exceptional young leader from your community, Lorenzo Shadid, a sixth grade student at Miami Arts Studio, grades 6th through 12th. Lorenzo is the third place winner in our statewide essay contest, If I Were Elected Mayor. This contest is an initiative presented annually at the Florida League of Mayors in partnership with the Florida League of Cities. The purpose of the contest is to encourage Florida's youth to envision themselves as mayors and share their ideas for improving their city, town, or village. This year, we received almost 1,200 essays from students across the state. Now, this is just middle school, so it's not open to everybody. From that number, Lorenzo's essay stood out for its creativity, thoughtfulness, and clear commitment to his community. As the third place winner, Lorenzo will receive a $250 gift card and a joint resolution from both the Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Mayors. He will be highlighted in a statewide news release featured in Quality Cities Online magazine and recognized on the Florida League of Mayors website and social media platforms. Lorenzo, we are very proud of you. Your essay shows us that the future of Florida cities is bright. Thank you again, Miami-Dade, Broward County and Commissioners, for your warm welcome and your continued support of civic education and youth engagement. One last thing, though, that aside from presenting this proclamation, here, I'll give this to you, Lorenzo, for you can, I'm not going to read that whole proclamation, but it is jointly signed, but there is a more important thing that's happening for Lorenzo today. What is that, Lorenzo? Yes, yes, he's the ripe old age of 14? 13. 13, 13, you're getting up there.

So I will add, Lorenzo, you're turning 14 today? 13. 13, you're turning 13 today, and you're in seventh grade, but this essay was written when he was in sixth grade. And 12. And he was 12. And so to Commissioner Hardeman's point, you see how proud your sisters are of you? Brother, you don't have to be mayor to be a leader. You're already leading. You see your parents? Your parents sacrificed so much so that you can have a better life. And let me tell you something, sir. You are already surpassing their expectations. Look at your mom right now. We are all very proud of you, and on behalf of Miami-Dade County and my amazing colleagues, these are the best and brightest of Miami-Dade, and they're here giving you accolades because you, my friend, are striving for greatness. You're striving to be a better person. You're striving to be a leader. So on behalf of Miami-Dade County, I want to present you with this congratulatory award for winning third place in your amazing essay on what you would do if you were mayor. Congratulations, my friend. And if we can get his sisters and his parents up here and we can sing him happy birthday.
