I work at the office of Mayor Jenny Durkan. First of all, thank you for all the work that each of you does to support our Councils and Commissions and to help the young adults of our city in so many different ways. I would also like to thank the liaison agents of the Councils and Commissions, who carry out a similar essential work to ensure the proper functioning of our agencies, in particular by supporting the Get EngagedEQ program. And I would like to thank Thor Madsen for his work in this regard. The candidates we are going to hear today remind us to what extent our young leaders are wise and competent workers. They are deeply concerned about public life in Seattle and represent the diversity of our city, from neighborhoods, identities and various horizons, bringing skills and unique experiences to strengthen our municipal administration. As you know, Seattle youth are not only the future of our city, they also lead our present. Mayor Wilson and her cabinet have involved the youth in many ways, from her youth committee within her transition team to many visits to the schools and community centers throughout the city to discuss key issues that young people are confronted with. Thank you, Matt. Hello everyone, members of the Council. My name is Imani Bender and I represent the Y Social Impact Center, which is our social service branch within the Greater Seattle Y. Some of you may remember me from previous years as part of this program.

I am therefore very happy to be here today to talk to you about the Get Engaged program and the group inspired by young people who are in front of you today.

The Get Engaged program places young adults aged 18 to 29 in Seattle City Council and Commission for a one-year mandate. The program was created in 2001, so it really represents this lasting partnership between the Y and the City of Seattle. This demonstrates the commitment of the city to invest in our next generation of leaders, as well as to enhance the voices of young people within the local government, L'impact de ce programme au fil des ans a été très clair. We have former Commissioner Get Engaged, who are now co-presidents of the Consultative Council on Community Technology, our LGBTQ Commission, the Commission of the Locators, and the Consultative Council for the Pedestrians. Of course, many other former participants of Get Engaged have continued their service within other councils. For many of these young people in front of you today is only the beginning of a long civil service journey. I would like to take a moment to also talk about our recruitment process. This year, we launched recruitment in the spring and interviewed more than 50 candidates for 21 councils and commissions. Recruitment and awareness have been extremely fruitful. We have made the word known on social networks. We have made contact with local universities, professional youth groups and distributed a ton of Prospectus throughout the city, in places frequented by our young people. We also place equity and diversity at the center of the Get Engaged recruitment process. Our goal every year is to form a cohort of young representatives of the many communities that make up the city, your city. I would also like to mention Thao Madsen from the Municipal Sheriff's Office, who gave me so much advice on this recruitment process over the years. You know, I would really be lost without Thao. I am a designer. The ethic of my work is to fill the gap between research and design to support and stabilize marginalized communities through accessible and culturally anchored solutions. My practices are based on the conviction that the people most affected by a system must be at the center of its refound. My name is Rashad Sampson and I am grateful to be here today to accept my nomination to the Disability Commission. This nomination is a key moment for me. Born and raised in the south of Seattle, proud graduate of Cleveland High School and Seattle University, I have thought a lot about time, people and links, as well as the role that each of us plays throughout our lives. A few years ago in Cleveland, I shared a period of classes with our specialised education class and that's where I met my friend Sean. At the time, I didn't know that this moment would still count for me years later. I just knew that Sean and I were connected. We built a friendship that could seem strange to some of our peers, but for us it was simply a friendship. We laughed, we communicated in our own way, we created a space where we could both be ourselves. My heart understood something even before I had the words to express it. I didn't know all the language around accessibility, handicap or inclusion. I just knew the connection. Et avec le temps, j'ai acquis le langage nécessaire. Les gens m'ont apporté une perspective. My name is Amy Nichols and I am a member of the Barrett family of the Samish Indian Nation. My mother is Lisa, her mother is Kari, her mother was Margaret, her mother was Delia, her mother was Fanny, also known under the name of Cumshleys. The last six generations of my family have lived in the Grand Seattle region and in this area since time immemorial. The fabric of my life and my community is woven in this place, in these waters, in this land, in the Salish Sea. Teddy believes in the creation and building of a world just where we are no longer content to survive, but where we prosper, and where living must no longer be exhausting, and where living must no longer be hard. Teddy is impatient to work alongside the members of the commission and the group Get Engaged, Engage, Engage, and to learn from their contacts. Eric is currently a student in the Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Washington. Installed in Seattle for a decade now, Eric has had the opportunity to work with tribal nations of the region, non-profit organizations, local, led by indigenous people, and various local community consultative groups on global planning and equitable transport, as well as development focused on transport. He has done internships in various local urbanism and design offices. Through his work, Eric is passionate about the co-creation of cities that are more equitable, inclusive and fair. As a member of the Seattle Urbanism Commission, he is enthusiastic about the idea of continuing to promote an urban, healthy, playful, resilient and community-focused design within the public projects of our city. Sarah applied for a nomination to the Seattle Banning Commission. Sarah recently graduated in geography from the University of Washington and has been living in the south of Seattle for a long time. It brought us peace, joy and the opportunity to learn. And now that I am in Seattle, I can explore another universe of urban forests. I am about to start my last year at the University of Washington studying environmental sciences. J'ai beaucoup appris sur les canopées et les espaces verts de Seattle. I have lived in this city for more than five years now, in districts 3, 4, 5 and 6, and I have worked in, and for districts 1, 2 and 7, and I like Seattle.

I like this city. I consider my parents here as my brothers and sisters, and you all as my uncles, aunts and uncles, who could teach us a lot of things. What I want to bring to the Community Engagement Commission is precisely this, to consider everyone not only as a resident, but as a member of the community and a neighbor, in the end, Je suis très reconnaissant de vivre dans une ville comme Seattle qui nous offre ces opportunités et qui permet à la communauté de s'impliquer. There is something incredibly special in these places that allow us to live the history of a city in such a tangible way. She is convinced that places like Pioneer Square, which connect us to people, to history and to the character of Seattle's past, are worth being protected. She is enthusiastic about the idea of bringing her legal and analytical perspective to the Council, while learning more about historical preservation and helping to ensure that this unique neighbourhood of Seattle is preserved for future generations. Then we have Jonathan Lopez Chavez. Jonathan requests his renewal within the Commission for Immigrants and Refugees. Jonathan Lopez Chavez is a first-generation Latino, a son of a parent, an immigrant and... He is committed to filling the gaps in terms of knowledge and the inequalities of opportunities that can prevent individuals and families from navigating in systems, from accessing resources, from taking on opportunities and from taking on opportunities. Thanks to his involvement with the lucrative employment association Europe United, Jonathan has worked to put young adults in touch with professional networks, career opportunities and resources that promote their progress. As an urban planner, I carry out the technical examination of permit requests and provide information on municipal regulations to the public as well as to professionals in the sector. By working with owners, architects, promoters and many others, I acquired a deep appreciation for transparency, efficiency and accessibility in local administration.
