All right. Thank you all. Welcome to the City Hall, everybody. We have a special City Commission meeting set today. Of course, it's Wednesday, May 27th, 2026. Please rise for the Pledge of Allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, Thank you all. I'm going to go ahead and turn on the mic so we can have roll call in a few seconds. Go ahead, Madam Clerk.
Commissioner Hernandez.
Here.
Vice Mayor Kaleri. Here. Commissioner Gruber.
Here.
Commissioner Biederman.
Here.
Commissioner Quintana? Here. Commissioner Shuham? Here. Mayor Levy?
Here. All right. Thank you, everyone. As you all know, we have the opportunity today to consider the appointment of folks who have applied to serve on our many volunteer boards here in the city of Hollywood. We appreciate everybody's interest. and serving on a board, it's certainly a great way for you to enjoy the subject matter of your interest if you selected a board that you're of course interested in or maybe one that your expertise could lend a helping hand to the city and its respective endeavors and the variety of boards that we have here. All of them are important, and some of them are also restricted in law in that you can only serve in one and not two. And so some of you might have applied for two boards, but they might have a restriction on service on one versus the other. if it's a particular board. And that would constitute, just for the reminder of the board here, of the city commission, membership on a board with a final decision-making authority constitutes an office. And therefore, any one of the following eight offices would restrict you from serving in a second office because you can't be a dual office holder. So that includes Civil Service Board, Emerald Hills Safety Enhancement District Board, Employees Retirement Board, Firefighters Pension Board, Historic Preservation Board, Hollywood Housing Authority Planning and Development Board, and Police Officers Pension Board. So if you serve on any one of those, you just can't serve on a second one of those. All right, the rest, yes, you can serve on two if we have the space and if you've applied for two and if you're selected. So thank you all. Today we have items three through 15. So that makes, if my math is correct, 12 boards. that we'll need to fill, 13. And so let's go ahead. The first one will be the, I just do want to point out for the dais here that, as you see on the dais, we received a corrected grid for items six and eight. Item six is Planning and Development Board with the addition of Stephen Morales for reappointment. And African-American Advisory Council has corrected information crossing out one member who was determined to not qualify. So let's go ahead with item three. I'll go ahead and leave all the mics on unless it gets messy. So let's go ahead with item three is a resolution of the City Commission appointing one member to the Hollywood Police Officers Pension Board. We have one applicant, Jeff Marano, for the one space. Can I have a motion?
Make a motion that we put Jeff Marano. Second.
Second.
Motion from Commissioner Hernandez, second from Commissioner Biederman. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, that item carries unanimously. Hopefully, it'll all be as easy as that.
Well, the second one will be, too.
A resolution of the City Commission appointing one member to the Hollywood Firefighters Pension Fund Board, one applicant, Mr. Alexander Diaz.
Motion to approve. Second. Second.
Motion from Vice Mayor Kaleri, second from Commissioner Hernandez to appoint Mr. Diaz. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously. Item 5 is a resolution of the City Commission to appoint one member to the Civil Service Board. Is Ms. Kingston, Jean, or Luke Lockhart here? Do we have cards on item 5, Pat?
No cards.
No cards. Opening it up to the floor. Motion to appoint Jean Kingston.
Second.
All right. Any objection?
Nope.
Hearing none, let's go ahead. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, that item carries unanimously. Motion was by Commissioner Biedermann, second from Commissioner Hernandez. Item six, moving right along, is the Planning and Development Board. We've got Two design member openings with three applicants, Massimo Gramanzini, Stephen Morales for reappointment, and Barbara Pomilo. And then we have on the professional members list as well, four people. So if you did apply to be on the Planning and Development Board and you fill out a speaker card, we'll go ahead and call you. Let's go ahead and hear from... Let's go ahead and hear from Selva Atas. Please come on up. Followed by Massimo Gramazzini and then Barbara Pomilio. And Stephen, make sure you fill out a card. He's behind you, Pat.
Turn on the mic, my love. Turn it on in the bottom. Right there. Thank you.
Thank you very much. My name is Selma Marietas. It's a pleasure to be here. My commitment to public service and governance is deeply rooted in my upbringing and my family. My passion for politics was ignited by my uncle Todd Brown, the former chief of security for NATO. Watching his dedication to global stability, strategic leadership, and the protection of communities taught me early on that governance requires both high-level vision and steadfast commitment to the safety and well-being of everyday people. I chose to plant my own roots right here in the city of Hollywood, a community I have proudly called home since my high school days. My stepfather also grew up in this city, giving our family a multi-generational bond with its tree-lined streets, historic neighborhoods, and coastal beauty. Hollywood isn't just a place where I live. It is the backdrop of my past and the focus of my future. As a professional digital content creator, I have built a platform on YouTube and TikTok with nearly half a million followers. This journey has given me a deep understanding of modern communication, media strategy, and audience engagement. More importantly, it has given me a direct pulse on what connects people, how to listen to diverse perspectives, and how to clearly communicate complex ideas to the public skills that are vital for transparent, accessible civic leadership. To lead Hollywood forward, we must fully understand the blueprint of its past. In 1920, our first mayor and founder, Joseph Wesley Young, arrived in South Florida with a singular, audacious dream to build an all-year resort paradise that he called his dream city. Inspired by the city beautiful movement of the early 20th century, which argued that architectural beauty and organized urban planning promote civic virtue and social harmony, Young meticulously designed Hollywood from scratch. Serving on a municipal board or city council is the most direct, impactful way to safeguard a community's unique identity while managing its inevitable evolution. Local government is where the pavement meets the road. It impacts our public parks, our historic preservation, our local business zoning, and the daily safety of our neighborhoods. Thank you so much for having me.
Thank you, Selva. Vice Mayor Clary?
Thank you, Selva. Thank you for coming up and speaking. I do see that you've applied for a couple of boards.
Do you have a preference in what those boards will be? I prefer historic preservation, for sure. First. Second? Second, community development.
And third, planning and development?
Third, planning and development.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for having me. It's a pleasure.
All right. Massimo Gravanzini, please come on up, followed by Barbara Pomilio. and Steven Morales. Dr. Gramanzini.
Good evening. I'm Massimo Gramanzini. Sorry, I don't have a written speech like that. That was good, but I'm going to go off the cuff here. So my name is Massimo Gramanzini. I'm seeking consideration for the Planning and Development Board. Just a little background on myself. I pretty much grew up in Hollywood. As a teenager, I was flipping pizzas at Angelo's Corner, my dad's old place back in the day. I met my wife here. Fast forward, I've invested in Hollywood with residential properties and commercial properties. So I really have an interest in seeing the city of Hollywood grow and grow responsibly. So I've always wanted to be part of that growing up. But, you know, with my business, I have a business on the beach in Hollywood. I also have an optometry practice. And over the years, you know, it was just, and I have three kids that I was traveling around doing sports and all that stuff. So I never really had the time. But fast forward to my time now, my businesses are pretty, you know, run pretty well. And I have things in place that allow me to have more time. My children are now in college. My last one is leaving and going to college this summer. So we're going to be empty nesters, my wife and I. We're going to spend a lot more time in Hollywood on the beach. So I figured this would be a great opportunity for me to be involved and just be part of the amazing growth and future of Hollywood, Hollywood Beach and downtown. And so I look forward to helping out any way I can. I do have some experience in development, not major projects, but I've done a fair amount and I'm really good with site plan evaluations and architectural drawings and planning and all kinds of stuff. I completed a few bigger projects this past year or two. So I'm pretty well versed on the ins and outs of how to do all that. And I think I could contribute pretty nicely to the board and use my knowledge in all the years of being involved with that type of development.
Awesome. Thank you, Massimo.
Eric, can I ask him a question?
Commissioner Hernandez.
Have you been to any of the planning and development board meetings?
I have. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, Dr. Gramazzini. Okay. All right. Barbara Pomilio. Question real quick.
Dr. Massimo.
Dr. Gramazzini, please come on up.
No, no, no.
No? I'll wait until after. It's for Andrea.
Oh, okay.
Please, go ahead. Sorry. We're good. No, no. No question. Who spoke out of turn? Barbara Pomilio.
Familia. Hi, good night. Thank you for having me. Well, my name is Barbara Familia. I'm originally from Argentina, not from Hollywood. We moved to the city of Hollywood two years ago. We decided to buy our property here because we see that it's a city that is up and coming. It's between, basically, Aventura and Fort Lauderdale, which are two cities that are growing a lot. So I think that should happen here as well. A little bit of my background. I'm an architect from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. And I hold a master's degree in architecture from in Germany. That's how I lived there for a couple of years. After that, I live in New York City. I work as an architect there. the regional rollouts nationwide for Nike and Barbary. Then I moved to Miami, and that's where I made a shift and started working in real estate development. I'm currently the director of development at Propolis, which is a multifamily developer in Miami. We do affordable housing and work for housing. So my interest is basically in the planning and development of a planning committee, board, sorry. Yeah, I have a background in architecture and real estate development, and I'm currently doing an MBA at Kellogg in Northwestern in the campus space in Coral Gables. So, yeah, that's basically my story.
Awesome.
Thank you so much, Barbara. Let's go ahead. Thank you. Stephen Morales.
Stephen. Where did he come from?
Good evening, commissioners and mayor.
Thank you for your service to our community.
I am architect Steven Morales. I've been on the board for eight years. I've been the only architect for the past eight years. I want to thank you for having given me the opportunity to be on the board. I've grown professionally and as a community member being on the board. I definitely enjoy being on the board. It's one of the things I really look forward to every single month. really looking at the changes that have happened to the city. Obviously, construction is a long process, and just seeing the things that we approve and how they come forth is very amazing. I definitely appreciate being a member of the community as well, and just seeing how My family takes part in all these growth that happen. I've been in basically Dristik V since I was 11 years old. I've grown up here in Hollywood. My entire family has been here for a long time. Obviously, I went away for college, but I came back, and I definitely appreciate this opportunity. Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you, Steven.
I got a question.
All right. I had Commissioner Biederman and then Hernandez. We'll go ahead to Commissioner Biederman.
No, not for Steven. Not for Steven, right. Steven, he's a reappointment.
Right. No, no, no, I have a question for Alex, because I'm looking at the paperwork and I can't find Andrea.
Let's allow Commissioner Biederman to have his question.
We have Selva listed as a professional member applicant for planning and development, but as not qualified on historic preservation.
There's different categories that one has to fit. And what she is qualified for on planning board is a business owner. Historic preservation board does not have that category.
Says professional member.
It still breaks it down into specific ones that are not that.
Thank you.
I'd like to make a motion.
All right.
Barbara Pomilio for design member. Can we add a design member from the profession? You can have two. Steven as a realtor.
You can do Steven and Barbara as the two architects for design.
OK, perfect.
And then Massimo as professional.
And Massimo as professional. Second.
Third.
Fourth. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously. So thank you. It's an appointment for Massimo Gramazzini as a professional member and Steven Morales and Barbara Pomilio as the design members. Thank you all so much. Looking forward to your service on that important board. All right. Let's go ahead now to item seven, is an appointment of six members to the Historic Preservation Board. I'd like to invite Andrea Winget to give us a little background on this because we have a lot of non-applications for some of the categories. So give us a little background on what's going on, Andrea.
So for the Historic Preservation Board, it is a board that consists of seven members with two alternates. So we need to have four members in order to have a quorum. This year, we have six seats that are open and available to be filled. Three of those seats we did not receive applications for. So we're going to continue to promote those and try to fill them. And we will bring something back if we receive any qualified candidates. And then we have three seats that are open that received qualified candidates for.
Dana, William, and Fred, reappointment. Correct.
So I have a question. Oh, and you can't have dual office holder on his side? Correct. OK. Yes.
Mayor, I have a question.
Go ahead.
For Andrea. Kathy DiBona is Historic Preservation Board. Dana Gallop, who's applying, is president of the Historical Preservation Board. But if we could, is it possible, just based on the number of years that Terry Cantrell has been involved with the Historic Preservation Board, that he could fulfill the application for architectural historian or urban planner? Move Terry to that. And then have Dana become the city at large? Can we make a motion to do that? And then we have Fred as a reappointment.
But he doesn't qualify for those titles.
But it's up to us, right?
No, there's qualifications there.
Well, let me propose something different. I see here a board that has a ton of vacancies. Right. The current terms expire when, Andrea?
There are the one term for the architect with practical experience in the rehab expires in 2029. The historian.
I'm saying the current members that are serving today. In other words, if we decided, hey, we don't have enough applications for this board, we want to re-advertise it, then do we have members that are able to serve until when? In other words, the current members.
The current three members are available to serve for the next year.
So reappoint Fred and then have everybody else apply.
So we can basically have this come back to us? You can reopen it?
So if the commission desires, what we have right now is we have to maintain our quorum. So we have three people who are currently in the seats and are slated to be there for one more year. The current... The current members that are on the board, all of them, they sit until the end of June. There are two meetings scheduled in June. We have one scheduled for June 9th, and we have a tentative one scheduled for June 29th. So any new members that you appoint today, their terms would start July 1. So if the commission desired, I could bring something back to you at your first meeting in July. where you could then appoint.
Saying re-advertise.
I could try to re-advertise, see if I could get more candidates for the additional three seats that are still open, and then I could bring something back to you at your first meeting in July. And we would still have a full board.
Fred is still on the board right now, right? Fred first.
We would still have a full board based on who's on there today.
I have a question. Are there any speaker cards on this item for Historic Preservation Board?
Can I ask a question, Mayor? Go ahead, Commissioner Biederman. Andrea, do they have to be a resident of Hollywood to be on historic preservation?
No.
OK. Can you maybe reach out to members of other historic preservation boards in Broward to see if they want to be part of Hollywood's also?
Yeah. As long as there's no legal issue with me doing that, I can absolutely do that.
Because obviously they have a interest in being on historic. Maybe they'll be on ours also.
Yeah.
So maybe I'll just offer to the City Commission to continue item number seven to have it come back July 7th.
The first meeting in July.
July 7th.
The board recesses in July.
Take that motion. Yeah. Okay. We have a motion. We have a second.
Second. Can we re-advertise in the meantime? No, no. I get it. But can we reappoint Fred or is that not?
He's already on the board until then. In other words, he's still an active member. So we can do it all in one shot in July.
That's fine.
All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none. I don't carry unanimously.
Fred being here today counts for July 7th.
All right. Let's get on to item number eight. Item number eight is appointing seven members to the African American Advisory Council. We have a corrected information sheet here, which leaves us with six applicants.
Motion to approve.
Second.
Third.
All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, item carries unanimously. I just do want to give an opportunity, if they came, if anyone who applied for African-American Advisory Council, I see there's one card. If I'm looking at Pat's hand correctly, after 10 years, I can tell how many cards she's holding. Nakia McNeil, you want to just come and introduce yourself because you've already been appointed and you could thank God and thank your mom and the Academy.
Yes, I would like to thank God, my mom, Hollywood.
Thank you all.
Well, I'm Nakia McNeil. I've lived in Hollywood for the last 12 years. I'm a registered nurse, and I'm really excited about the opportunity to give back to my community and get involved in any way I can. Awesome. Thank you.
Look forward to your service. Thank you. Thank you so much. Welcome.
Mayor, can that motion also include lots for terms that this clerk will draw? Thank you.
No objection.
Moving on.
Item number nine.
Engine, engine, number nine.
On the New York transit line. Appointing five members to the artwork selection committee. Looking at our slate here, we have Selva Atas, who we heard from, Kathleen DeBona as a re-employment, John McMillian, Marcus Moise, and Shiva Orsel-Girin. That's one, two, three, four, five applicants for four spaces, four seats. So we'll have to make a selection. Pat, are there speaker cards on item number nine, artwork selection committee?
And there are no students listed. If there are any students in the audience that are interested, come on up as well. A little part.
Salvia Atas, did you want to just kind of say the same thing that you did before?
Just wave.
Come on up.
Come on up. Come on up. You're the next contestant at the Hollywood City Commission.
We'll have to learn about that half a million follower TikTok page, too. Heck, yeah. I don't know if I'm afraid to ask, really. I don't know.
Maybe we need to put her on C-Med.
Good evening, members of the council and fellow community members. Thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight regarding the open position on the city's artwork selection committee. Public art is the visual heartbeat of the community, and selecting pieces that inspire requires a balance of creative vision and structural discipline. I bring a formal foundation in fashion and design, giving me a deep understanding of aesthetics, scale, and form, and allowing me to visualize how conceptual art will translate into our shared physical spaces. This artistic eye is grounded by nearly a decade of experience, as an assistant salon manager alongside years in specialized customer service and retail. These roles taught me the strict realities of budgeting, project management, and public relations, ensuring that I will approach every civic project with fiscal responsibility and logistical precision. Thank you.
Can you tell us about your social media pages, if it's your business?
Oh, yeah, no, for sure. It's Selva the Explorer. I'm a paranormal investigator. I've filmed many videos in our city as well. I love living here. I
I love it.
There's a lot of haunted locations. There's a Hollywood Beach Resort. Yes, I have.
What's going on over there?
Well, now it's under, what's going on there? It's like abandoned or? No, I'm talking about the ghost. Oh, the ghost Al Capone is definitely haunting that location.
Love it, love it, love it.
Thank you.
Well, okay, all right.
Is that why you wanted to do historical boards so you could find out all the bones? Yes, actually, that was my main plan.
I got you. Well, it sounds like you might fit in with artwork selection. Thank you. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much.
That was the only speaker card, so why don't we go ahead and... We have a student? Come on up. All right, student, come on up.
Make sure you fill out a card afterwards. Come on up.
Look at this. Your name, please, and just please go ahead.
Hi, good afternoon. My name is Crystal Marie Gonzalez, and may I ask a question? Yes. Can you summarize the committee in a short sentence?
Artwork Selection Committee.
That's just it?
It's artwork throughout the city.
Okay, so I actually came here to apply for the Educational Advisory Committee, but this also appears to be one of my interests. Because ever since I was young, I've always been interested in art. For example, for my elementary school, for my fourth and fifth grade, I actually entered for a yearbook competition to design the cover. And I did happen to win those competitions. And then also for my whole high school experience, thankfully to one of my teachers, she has been supporting me all the way out the whole time. And I have actually entered multiple competitions for the world language district competitions for Broward County Public Schools. It's a long name. But I actually have won first place for a scrapbook and a poster and a few other things. But I'm very involved with art. And I'm also in AP art for the school year. So if I can be appointed to this committee, I'd really appreciate it. Because art, really deep down, I love expressing emotions. Like my portfolio, it was all about emotions and fears. So I involved fear of heights and all of that other stuff. Yeah, that's it. Amazing. And I hope to speak for Educational Advisory Committee in a little bit. Great presentation. Thank you so much.
You got it. So, ladies and gentlemen, we have four members to appoint to the regular membership and then the new student applicant. Go ahead, Commissioner.
I think we have another student possibly interested in this committee. Come on up.
All right, come on up. Ooh, I like it. We might just have to expand this board. Go ahead.
Hello, everyone. My name is Vivian Horvath. Most of you may know me. I've actually met the mayor quite some times for art competitions. I won the District 4 award for the water conservation. And I also do many sculptures around the city, like with Miss Quintana. And I love art in general. I have so many pictures of me just coloring ever since I was four years old. I have an art studio in my room where Instead of a desk, it's covered with all my art supplies. And one of my main passions is art. You'll hear about it later for the Education Advisory Committee, but I made a coloring page for children to help with their motor skills, et cetera. And I have quite a lot of children involved in that project. And I just love seeing how art can influence many people, bring together the communities, and just impact people in general. So I would love to be part of this committee. Awesome.
And you're Vivian Horvath? Yes. Horvath. Awesome.
Should I submit a card? Yes, please.
And I just have a question for you, Vivian. So you applied for two boards, correct? Yes. Artwork and education advisory? Yes. Which one do you prefer? If there was a preference, or would you like to serve on two?
There's a time commitment for each. I would do two.
Okay.
You would like to serve on two. Okay. Okay. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you.
So Commissioner Gruber, I hear you.
So what I'm looking at, we don't have any student applications for artwork, right? But they just threw their names in. And then if I'm looking at education advisory for two spots, there's four students. So why don't we just move them to artwork, and then the other two students can get education advisory board?
Well, for this particular item, there's now two applicants. Right. Right. So, and Pat, just if we wanted to appoint both, then we could by supermajority do that, correct? Expand.
The only problem is you only have one vacancy.
Right, but we can create a second position by motion.
That's correct.
So let's go ahead and resolve which four out of five applicants for the regular membership. We have Selva, Kathleen DeBona, and John McMillian are reappointments. And then perhaps one of you may have a more close knowledge of Marcus, Moise, or Shiva, or Selgeron. Commissioner Biederman?
Well, Marcus, we just appointed, I think.
No.
No.
Commissioner Biederman, you have the floor.
Yeah, so I would like to make a motion to approve Atas, Dibona, Moise, and Orsel Guren.
OK.
I'll second that motion.
All right, we have a motion and a second for Atas, Dibona, Moyse, and Orsil Guren. And then for the student applicants, both?
Yes.
I just have a question. Is there a reason for not reappointing John McMillan?
Do you really want me to say it? This is my motion. Atas, Dibona, Moyse, and Orsil Guren.
So I think you're going to have to go down the seven, Mayor.
You want to do the lots or like do the grid? Yep. All right. So that's fair enough. All right. So let's go ahead then. We'll do this in the old fashioned since we might have a difference.
What I was going to say, Mayor, is that we just appointed Marcus Moyse to African Advisory Board. That's all.
But that's not the same.
Let's go down the line. Your point is made. And just to confirm, Mr. McMillian or Marcus Moyes or Shiva or is anybody here whose name I've called? No? All right. So let's go ahead down the line. Well, we have a motion and a second. But then I'm hearing that we want to do it. They can vote against it. Old fashioned.
We can vote against it. They're OK. All right.
OK. I'm just here as a servant of the board here. So we have a motion for Atas, Dibona, Moyse, and Guerin, and both Crystal Marie Gonzalez and Vivian Horvath. So by effect, we're actually, by this motion, also expanding the number of students on this board to two. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously. All right. That was efficient. Thank you. All right. Let's go ahead now to the Marine Advisory Board, item 10, appointing seven members. In the marine industry professional, which has three positions, there is one applicant, Rick Goldman. For Hollywood resident member, there are two openings for an additional two applicants besides Mr. Goldman. A regular member is the same three, so it looks like there's five openings and three applicants at the top position. and that Mr. Zachary Manasseh actually also qualifies as youth. So really, there are three applicants for six positions. Are there any speaker cards on the Marine Advisory Board? Yeah, advertising. All right, let's hear from Rick Goldman. Come on up, Rick.
I'm Rick Goldman, a South Lake resident since 1986, local business owner, and very active scuba diver and free diver. I've been diving off Hollywood's beach since 1995. Any day when the wind is light and conditions are good, I am underwater. I'm applying for the Marine Advisory Board because I believe our city's coastal waters and natural reefs are among our greatest economic and environmental assets. Each time I dive, I photograph bleached or diseased corals and submit reports to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on their Bleach Watch website. Through decades of firsthand experience in our local waters, I have a good understanding of our unique marine geography. I know it's important to protect our reefs and ensure swimmer and diver safety. As a local business owner, I bring a practical, collaborative approach to problem solving. I understand how to weigh community safety, ecological preservation, and economic interest to find solutions that serve all Hollywood residents. I'm ready to dedicate my time and decades of local diving experience and my professional background to help this commission make informed decisions for our waters. Thanks for your time.
Thank you, Rick. What line of business are you in? For purposes of these categories.
My business? Yeah. Advertising. Okay.
Thank you. Vice Mayor Kaleri. Thank you, Rick.
Thank you, Rick. So if I look at this correctly, I think we have to re-advertise this as well.
Agreed.
The reason being it's Hollywood Residence 2. So if we appoint Rick as the marine industry professional, he gets crossed off as the two members. So that leaves us with Zachary and Christopher.
I second that.
And then... You see? So I think we need to put it back out for... Re-advertisement. Re-advertisement so that we can fill all the spots.
So that's a motion to continue item number 10 until July 7th?
Zachary could be a youth reappointment.
Correct, but it'll still leave us open.
We have more spots that we only have one person. No.
So we still have open slots, so I'd like to reappoint that and bring it back on July 7th as well.
So that's a motion to continue this board appointment, item number 10, to July 7th?
Correct.
Is there a second? Second.
Second.
Second. And the youth position, Mr. Manassi, would continue to serve until July. His term probably doesn't expire. I don't know who the liaison is to this, but I imagine that it continues on. All right. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously. Mayor, these items will be at 5 o'clock on July 7th?
5? We can make it 5 o'clock.
Let's make it after citizen comments, so make it 5-15. Okay, perfect.
If anybody knows anybody who's interested in the Marine, make sure you get them to submit.
Right. All right. Item 11, then, is appointment of six members to the Sustainability Advisory Committee. All right. All right. We've got a selection to make. I think for this particular one, we'll do the usual fashion since there's one slot and, for example, four applicants. Pat Cerny, are there any speaker cards for Item 11, Sustainability Advisory Committee? And just correct at the top of our selection list, substitute Hernandez for Anderson. Peter, I thought that made you smile. All right.
I wasn't going to vote.
All right. Rochelle Buzzi, followed by Crystal Marie Gonzalez.
Good evening, Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioners, and the public. My name is Rochelle Buzzy. I live in District 2, and I've been proud to call Hollywood home since moving here in 2014. Back then, I joined the Marine Science Magnet Program at South Broward High School, which was really... That was where my passion for our environment and sustainability was really born. The teachers there, the programs really inspired me. Now as a public school teacher myself, with many students who also call Hollywood home, I feel even more motivated to lead by example and become more involved in our city's sustainability goals, not just in my personal life, but also through my professional and academic capacities. So I'm a public servant at heart. I truly believe Hollywood has the potential to be a very... be a real model for what Florida's cities of the future can look like. We are very much uniquely positioned in a beautiful and ecologically essential part of Florida to be an even better leader in sustainability as we continue to strengthen our city against environmental changes and innovating to meet the evolving needs of our residents and the ecosystem we live on. To this committee, I would bring experience from the city level, federal level, and county level. So my city level was I recently interned under the sustainability officer for the city of Sunrise. There I helped with their certification efforts for the Florida Green Building Coalition. I helped organize community events and supported overall sustainability education initiatives, which was really fun. During my master's program at FIU, I concentrated on political ecology issues and was also a climate change learning for action fellow where I studied climate science and a broad range of climate solutions from different parts of the world. During that time, during my master's, I was also a diplomatic fellow for the US Department of State. So one summer, I spent working at the Office of Global Change in DC. And then one summer, I spent working under the climate officer in Mexico City. Currently, I'm also a certified habitat steward volunteer with Broward County NatureScapes, which I've been doing for almost two years now. So I'm all around. I'm very passionate about this. Some things I'm interested in seeing are, I guess, helping promote our normalizing, further normalizing citywide composting, waste, and plastic reduction efforts across public spaces, schools, businesses, and homes, while also advocating for sustainable education and education community-driven resilience initiatives that are also equitable to our very diverse populations. As a young professional myself, I have the time, energy, dedication, and passion to put towards the causes I care deeply about. And so serving on this committee is one of the ways I hope to meaningfully contribute to this community that I love very much. Thank you for your time and your consideration.
Thank you, Richelle. Crystal Marie Gonzalez, if you'd like to speak on sustainability. Come on. All right. And by the way, if you've already been appointed to a board, don't feel like you need to stay while we go through everything. Feel free to go about your evening. But if you're interested and you're looking to meet people and hear and learn, then that's great, too. Crystal Marie.
OK, guys, take two. This time, I actually wrote a small speech for this. OK, so good evening, mayor, vice mayor, and city commissioners. I'm here tonight to also hopefully be appointed for the Sustainability Advisory Committee. Keeping Hollywood green and resilient is the most important thing we can do for the future of our city. We need to focus on protecting our beautiful coast, reducing waste, and finding smart ways to handle climate change. I want to serve on this committee to help bring a fresh perspective and connect these green goals to the younger people in our community. I am fully ready to show up and work hard to protect our environment and I respectfully ask for you to consider me for this position. Thank you.
Thank you. All right. I will just mention to the city commission that I did get an email from Kenzie Scanlon. I do know her from her childhood. She's a student applicant. And she couldn't be here tonight, but she did send an email. I don't know if it was sent to all of us or just me, but FYI. I can vouch for her being a conscientious student. All right. So let's go ahead down the line.
I think from the- Make a motion.
Okay.
Excuse me, Mayor, before we make a motion.
Sorry.
Yes. Real quick update. Mark Ambrose, Director of Design and Construction Management. There's two additional openings citywide due to absences. So I just wanted to let the Commission know. So citywide will be three? Yes. Three total seats.
Oh, perfect. Instead of one. We don't have to even talk about it. Okay. So. So there's three, and then the business member has one. Alternates would be open, remain open, since those four people would fill up those four seats above them. For student member, I guess we would just have to pick the student member. There's Kenzie Scanlon, and then, of course, there's Crystal Marie. That could be an alternate, so I'll just wait for a motion, whichever way.
So I'll make a motion. So I would say Jean Kingston as the business member, Rachel Boozy as citywide, Peter, oh, I'm sorry, Rachel. Peter Librand for the alternate.
No, there's three citywide. Oh, there's three.
Oh, so there you go.
Yeah, it's everybody.
Peter, Christopher, and Rachel. Yeah, the students. No alternates, obviously. And then student member would be Kenzie, and alternate would be Crystal.
Second. Third. All right, we have a motion and a second. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously.
Just so you know, alternate can still attend the meetings. They just cannot cast a vote, but you can still do that.
Unless there's an absence, then they step in.
All right. Item 12 is appointment of six members to the Community Development Advisory Board. There are one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Eight applicants for five member positions. And then there is a primary alternate member position. All right. Who is our, do we have a liaison on this board? A city commission liaison?
Ryan. There we go.
Oh, there's a staff liaison, but it's not a board where we have a city commission member. Okay, I'm confusing it with commission. Yeah, I'm confusing it with AHEC. All right, speaker cards for community development advisory board. All right, Selva Atas. Thank you.
You want to come up and speak again or you want to wave? Okay, come on up. I love it. Come on up.
Aaron, you're going to have to top her, so I don't know. Paranormal here.
I love it.
Good evening again. I'm standing before you tonight because of our city's historic fabric isn't just a collection of old buildings, it is a living blueprint of Joseph Young's 1920s dream city. He envisioned Hollywood as a masterpiece of Mediterranean revival architecture and intentional urban design, and my formal background in fashion design gives me the precise aesthetic I needed to honor and protect that vision. However, preserving history requires more than appreciation.
Selva, I'm sorry, this is Community Development Advisory Board. I don't know if that speech was for Historic Preservation Board. If it's not, then excuse me for interrupting you.
I did not save that speech on my phone. I'm so sorry. It is on my computer.
I got you. Erin Marvasti, why don't you come on up while Selva regroups there. We'll give her her time again.
Good evening, Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioners, and city staff. Thank you for the opportunity to speak tonight and for considering my reappointment for the Community Development Advisory Board. Serving on this board has been both an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously. The work we do directly impacts the lives of residents throughout our city by helping guide investments in housing, public services, neighborhood improvements, and community programs. What makes this role especially meaningful to me is that I am not only a board member, but also a District 5 resident who lives in a low to moderate income neighborhood. I understand firsthand the importance of investing in our communities, supporting working families, and ensuring resources reach those who need them the most. Throughout my time on the board, I have worked to ensure that the community development funds are used responsibly and effectively to create meaningful benefits for our residents. I bring both a resident's perspective and a strong commitment to serving our community. Beyond this board, I have dedicated many years to volunteering, supporting local schools, organizing community initiatives, and working with nonprofit organizations throughout Hollywood. My passion has always been helping people and strengthening the community I call home. I am proud of the work this board has accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to serve. If reappointed, I will continue to serve with integrity, dedication, and a commitment to ensuring that our residents remain at the center of every decision that we make. Thank you for your time and consideration as I respectfully ask for your support and reappointment to the Community Development Advisory Board. Thank you.
Thank you. Thank you. Selva, did you want to share your community development speech?
She's on a roll.
Yeah. District 2 resident, Peter.
I know. I know. I saw that.
Good evening, members of the board. The Planning and Development Board holds the critical responsibility of shaping Hollywood's physical future. Reviewing complex zoning variance.
No, no. I'm sorry. This is Community Development Board.
I'm so sorry.
That's OK. We know what it is. So this talks about, Ryan, why don't you explain this board real quick? Very short, two minutes, and then we'll let Selva kind of off the cuff react to what you're saying.
I'll give a read for it. How are you? You're fine. Don't worry.
So the Community Development Advisory Board, what we do here on this board is we provide recommendations to the commission on how we utilize our state, federal, and local funding to move low to moderate income communities forward, whether it's providing funding for a nonprofit that's provided FOOD PANTRY OR TUTORING TO CHILDREN IN NEED, OR IT COULD BE WORKING WITH A NONPROP THAT'S PROVIDING RESOURCES TO STUDENTS, LIKE THE BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB, OR SOMETHING LARGER WHERE WE'RE WORKING WITH AN ORGANIZATION THAT'S PROVIDING TENANT-BASED RENTAL ASSISTANCE TO PEOPLE IN NEED. SO WE'RE REALLY ABOUT MOVING THOSE LOW TO MODERATE INCOME COMMUNITIES, PEOPLE IN AREAS THAT NEED THAT HAND UP, MOVING THEM FORWARD. THAT'S WHAT THIS BOARD ESSENTIALLY DOES. ARE YOU INTERESTED?
YES, ABSOLUTELY. If we start now with the youth and get them to the right direction by offering the right programs, we're able to show them that there is a future. Starting with the youth is incredibly important. When you live in a low income poverty neighborhood, sometimes all you see is what's in front of you. Sometimes you're not able to see the future. And what we can do as a city of Hollywood residents and on the committee board, is to show them that there is more to the future than just what you see. And being able to provide for them is a necessary tool because sometimes people do need a stepping stool to get to where they need to go. So if we can do that, then I think we're doing the right thing. That's for sure. And what is life without doing the right thing?
Thank you.
I'm so sorry about earlier. Oh, my goodness.
You were able to do it off the cuff. Thank you. Thank you very much. All right, ladies and gentlemen, I think for this we'll go to the old way and just name five members out of the eight, and then we'll see who gets the majority votes, and we'll settle it. Open the floor for any comments before we go ahead, if there are any comments. If not, let's go ahead. Commissioner Shuham.
I was going to do Christina Frazier, Luke Lockhart, Peter Libran, Aaron Marvasti, and Shiva Orsel Gorin.
Thank you. Commissioner Hernandez.
Thank you, Mayor. I have Selva Atas. I have Lorena Callejas, Christina Frazier, I need to do one more, correct? Mm-hmm. Okay.
All right. Vice Mayor Kaleri.
I'm going to do Selva, Lorena, Christina, Luke, and Aaron.
Okay. Commissioner Gruber.
Lorena, Christina, Luke, Aaron, and Sheva.
OK. Commissioner Biederman.
So my concern is we already appointed Sheva, and we don't know, being that they're not here, whether or not they can handle more than one board. That being said, I'll vote for Lorena, Christina, Peter, Aaron, and Shiva.
Commissioner Quintana, now that it's already decided, go ahead.
I don't know. I'm going to still put my vote in. Selva, Lorena, Christina Frazier, Aaron Marvasti, and Shiva.
Okay. So, one, two... Three, four. We're just trying to see if there is one that I could put over the top to make it a whirl. Give me a second. Now, we have Lorena, Christina, Peter Librand, and Aramah, Rusty, and Shiva. That's four that already see the majority. And so for the others between, I guess, Luke, Lockhart and Aselva Amiri-Attas have three each. So if I vote for one of them, it'll be them. Does anyone know anything? Ryan, do you have any background on Luke Lockhart? I apologize for asking. No?
Mayor, if you look at the resume from Peter Liberin, he lives in subsidized housing.
I got you. He lives in subsidized housing. OK.
We already appointed him.
All right. So if you want to reopen it up to the remainder. So if we have Erin Marvosti, Shiva Orsil-Gieran, Christina Frazier, and Lorena Calejas that are selected, then we could go a second round between the rest that haven't been appointed, which is.
Mayor, the second page has an alternate. So we pretty much can do that, too.
OK.
All right, so Mayor, could you please, for the record, put your vote in so that we have it?
Yes, ma'am. Here we go. All right, I'm going to go with Selva because she's here, and she cares deeply about people that can move forward in life. So let's go ahead. Then the slate is, as provided, Selva Atas, Lorena Calejas, Christina Frazier, Erin Marvasti, and Shiva Orsel-Girin as the five primary members. And as an alternate, I'm happy to cross out those that were already selected. Selva, Lorena, Christina, Peter, Aaron, and Shiva. I'm sorry, not Peter.
Not Peter.
So the openings we have for the alternate is Peter Librand, Luke LeCarte, Stephen Baker, those three. Yeah. All right. So let's go ahead. Everybody will cast their vote for one out of these three. Stephen Baker, Luke Lockhart, and Peter Librand. Let's go ahead in reverse order. Commissioner Quintana.
Peter Librand.
OK. Commissioner Bienerman.
Peter Librand.
Commissioner Gruber. Peter Librand. Making it easy. Vice Mayor Clary.
Peter.
Commissioner Hernandez.
Mr. Libran.
Commissioner Shuham.
That's fine. Peter.
And for myself, the same. All right. And so all is in favor of those selected.
Mayor, I'm sorry to bother you again.
You want me to read the names?
No, lots.
If the city clerk. With lots. With lots. Thank you. All right. Thank you. And you have the selections of the five and the one? Yes, I do. All those in favor say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously onto item 13.
Could you just clarify who made the motion and who seconded on this? Because I don't have that.
Someone who made the motion.
I'll make the motion. Second.
And second by Commissioner Biederman and Kintana. You can decide that picture, that photo finish. Give it to Biederman. Thank you very much. All right. Item 13 is appointment of five members to the Education Advisory Committee. All right. Do we have any speaker cards on 13? Vivian Horvath, come on up. Crystal Marie Gonzalez. And Matthew Leibowitz.
Hello, everyone. My name is Vivian Horvath, and I'm in 11th grade at the College Academy at Broward College. I've had lots of experience in the Broward school system, both inside and out of the classroom. I'm still a student, so I have lots of future experience to gain. Therefore, I would love to be a part of the Education Advisory Committee and advocate for fellow students. As of now, I have over 200 service hours in the community and am aiming for more, most of which I've earned from volunteering with children. Whether it is at a school or at the library, I love to help children. I also value education and my hobby of art greatly. I created my own coloring pages that teaches and helps students with their motor skills, community building, and creativity. In fact, I'm running an event this Sunday with over 100 children registered. My experience with children and the education system helps me view perspectives of others and take them into consideration. In addition, I have many responsibilities in my school, some being vice president and president of clubs. Although I have these titles, I put a lot of work into helping connect my community at Broward College with these clubs. I balance my responsibilities and am truly passionate in helping my community, especially with children and education in general. Also, I'm in a special program where I get my AA degree, so I have experience in both high school and on a college campus full time. By being on the committee, I can bring my knowledge and service work with me to help with improvements in education. Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you, Vivian. Let's hear from Crystal Marie Gonzalez if she'd like to speak on Education Advisory Committee. And if she wants a third board, you'll be busy.
I'm free.
I'll make time.
OK, so now for the speech. So good evening, mayor, vice mayor, and city commissioners. My name is Crystal Marie Gonzalez, and I'm a rising senior in the ACE program at MacArthur High School. I'm here tonight to ask to be appointed to the Educational Advisory Committee. When you choose who should serve on this committee, I think the most important question is, who has the fresh perspective this city needs right now? Our local schools are going through big changes with budgets, school boundaries, and open seats. You need a committee member who doesn't just read about these issues on paper, but who sees them in person every day. I believe I should be chosen for three main reasons. First, I have district experience. This past school year, I've served as the district webmaster for the Broward County Association of Student Councils, and that role has allowed me to work with student leaders from all over the county and see how big school district decisions are made. Second, I know what is happening in our classrooms. I'm an active leader in MacArthur's student government, and I'm the incoming secretary for mentoring tomorrow's leaders for the next school year. I'm in our local clubs and local schools every day. I know firsthand how new rules, budget cuts, and teacher shortages affect real students and families right now. Finally, I have a strong commitment to Hollywood. As a current City Youth Ambassador, I have learned a lot of how our city government works. I have over 1,000 hours of community service, which shows how I'm always ready to show up and do the hard work to help others. Since this committee only meets once a month, every meeting needs to count. By choosing me, you are putting a direct link to our schools in the room. I can help the committee understand what students really need and how the city can best support them. I have looked over the meeting calendar, and I'm fully ready to dedicate my time and energy for this role. Thank you for your leadership, and I respectfully ask you to consider me for this position. Additionally, because I'm also super, super deeply invested in the overall future of our city, I would also love to be considered for the appointment to the Sustainability Advisory Committee and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. If any positions are also available there as well.
I hope you have a car and you can drive yourself to all these meetings.
I will.
Your mom is going to be crazy.
I get my license this July 3rd, so I will be going out every year.
Okay, okay, okay.
Thank you.
No question, Mom. Okay. Matthew Leibowitz, come on up. District 4 resident, Commissioner Gruber. Yes.
Casey, you created a monster here.
I know.
That was Crystal Marie, District 4, Playland.
Good evening, Mayor. Good evening, Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioners. Hello, my name is Matthew Lubowitz, and I was born and raised in Hollywood, Florida, and I'm excited about the opportunity to join the Education Advisory Board Committee. I've been active in my school and community from a young age and have a strong passion for education. I currently serve on the Sterling Road Library's Teen Advisory Board. I helped organize the library's annual Freedom to Read Fest and will be leading it this October. Last month, I had the honor of bringing the film to the librarians to Cinema Paradiso and introducing Beam Fur as the moderator. Over the past year, I've also volunteered with Achieve Miami as a teacher's aide, where students voted me best teacher. I'm interested in joining the EAC for many reasons. Our city faces the possibility of school closures, and I want to be part of these important conversations. I attended the meeting with school board member Alan Zeman regarding the possible closure of Olson Middle. I hope to continue advocating for strong schools and supporting the program's family's value. From Montessori and STEM to Marine Biology and JROTC. I'd also love to contribute to initiatives such as the School Board Candidate Forum and teacher grant subcommittees, while helping bring many new ideas to the committee. I'm especially passionate about supporting and recognizing the incredible teachers who work tirelessly for students every day. I'd be honored to serve on the committee and help continue improving our schools. Hollywood is an A city, and our schools should reflect that. Thank you.
All right. Thank you, Matthew. All right, ladies and gentlemen, for Education Advisory Committee, it looks like we had the students want to come in and speak. But for the teacher member, there are apparently four qualified teachers, and we only have space for two. And that pushes the balance to the regular member group. And so why don't we go ahead down the line, and we'll go back in the other order. And so pick two out of four for the teacher member. Go ahead, Commissioner Shuham.
I have the reappointment of Elaine McGuffey and Samantha Walker.
Commissioner Hernandez?
I like Arlene Valdez, and I don't have a problem reappointing McGuffey. Okay.
Commissioner, Vice Mayor Kaleri?
I will... McGuffey and Valdez.
Commissioner Gruber.
McGuffey and Valdez.
McGuffey and Valdez, sorry. Commissioner Biederman.
I have a question. Do they have to be a Hollywood resident for this board?
I don't believe so. But we're about to find out.
Who's not a Hollywood resident?
Arlene Valdez is in.
She's a District 2, actually, if the address is correct.
No, she's her business address.
Good evening.
And then Samantha Walker is, I don't know.
Good evening, Mayor and Commissioners. Tamir Mag, Grants Administrator and staff to the EAC. They can either be a Hollywood resident or employed in a Hollywood school or own a business or work in Hollywood. Those are the requirements for this particular board.
Oh, it says District 6 on our sheet. So maybe her workplace.
No, she's not.
So two of them are employed at Avant Garde. Who are those? One is employed at Hollywood Hills High School. And Mr. McGuffey is an adjunct professor at Nova Southeastern.
OK. He's not actually employed in Hollywood, correct?
No, but he's a Hollywood resident.
OK. So who are the other ones that are employed that you mentioned in Avant Garde, for example?
That would be, I apologize, I have it right here. That would be Arlene Valdez and Samantha Walker are both employees of Avant Garde Academy.
OK. And Samantha Walker has 2025 McKinley Street as an address.
That's avant-garde. That's avant-garde. That's avant-garde, okay.
Yeah, they use their business address as well. Is Arlene Valdez just a teacher, or is she also on the faculty?
So Ms. Valdez is the executive director, and Ms. Walker is the operations director.
Okay, yeah, I recognize.
I'd like to correct mine.
All right, so now with that new information, let's go over to new if you all like. So let's rewind the clock. So go ahead, Commissioner Schumann.
I just want one question. Where does Rudd Abreu work?
District 5. Oh, he lives in District 5.
Where does he work? And is also a teacher at Hollywood Hills High School.
Okay. I'm going to do Elaine McGruffy and Rudd Abreu.
Okay. Commissioner Hernandez?
I'd like to go with Arlene Valdez and Samantha Walker.
Yeah.
Same with me.
Okay. Catching up. Gruber?
I'm sorry. I want McGuffey and Valdez.
McGuffey and Valdez. Okay. Commissioner Gruber?
Abreu and McGuffey.
I'm sorry? Abreu and McGuffey? Yep. Okay.
Commissioner Biederman? Abreu and McGuffey.
Okay. Commissioner Quintana?
Abreu and McGuffey.
Abreu and McGuffey. All right. Well, it looks like Abreu and McGuffey have the opportunity. I'll just put my vote in for Valdez and Abreu. So the selected are Elaine McGuffey and Rod Abreu.
And then maybe Valdez for regular meeting.
And then for regular member. Ms. Valdez is really a strong administrator there. So I know she'll be a real contributing member. I think this board has kind of lacked a drive from my experience in the past. I know as an executive director there, she'd be looking to get things done and be active. So I would just advocate for her participation. And it's just great to have her even apply and be a part of what we're doing here. All right, so for regular member then, let's go ahead and reverse order. Commissioner Quintana?
Arlene Valdez.
OK. Commissioner Biederman?
Arlene Valdez.
Commissioner Gruber.
Arlene Valdez.
Commissioner, Vice Mayor Kaleri.
Valdez.
Commissioner Hernandez. Valdez. Commissioner Shuham.
Valdez.
And Valdez for me. OK, so that's Valdez. For the student category, we've got Gerard Brown. And we heard from Crystal Marie Gonzalez, Vivian Horvath, and Matthew Leibowitz. We have an opportunity to choose two, unless we wanted to expand the board to three student positions. them all an opportunity i like that idea get them all involved banding to three all right so that would be crystal marie gonzalez vivian horvath and matthew lewis yes all right so with that um let's have a motion to appoint as teacher members rada brew and elaine mcguffey as a regular member arlene verdes and as students crystal marie gonzalez vivian horvath and matthew lewis motion by motion second Vice Mayor Kaleri makes the motion, second by Commissioner Quintana. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously.
Mayor, that motion also includes lots by the clats.
Always lots. Let's go ahead to the Hispanic Affairs Council. We have an opportunity to appoint three members and two alternate members. It's great to see so many applicants. And let's welcome the board liaison.
Good evening, commissioners. Major Manuel Ruiz, the liaison for Hispanic Affairs Council. Just a slight change of the reso. Member Maribel Ruiz has resigned effective May 18, therefore Having said that, Cristina and Alejandra still are seeking reappointment as members. And they're essential to the goal of an instrumental into the Hispanic Heritage Day planning.
Thank you. CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN- Cristina and Alejandra Palacios. CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN- Yes. CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN- Beautiful. CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN- Yeah, Maribel was the.
CHRISTOPHER COLEMAN- So does that make it four instead of three? Has Maribel resigned?
No, it just reduces Maribel from being an applicant for one of the three positions or the alternate position. So just cross out Maribel Ruiz is what I'm hearing. And then, of course, we all know Cristina Monello and Alejandro Palacios. Those are reappointments. And so we have four other applicants beyond the reappointments. And let's have speaker cards. We'll get to meet some of them today. Marta, Khalil, please come on up. followed by Jesse Hernandez, Cristina Moniello. Go ahead.
Good evening, Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioners. Thank you for having me. My name is Martha Khalil, and I am a proud Latina who lives in Hollywood for over 10 years in District 5. Over the past year and a half, I've become very involved in our city by attending events, volunteering my time, helping where I can, and building meaningful connections throughout the community. That experience has shown me that I'm ready to take this commitment into the next level. I became more involved and I realized that I was ready to take that step to become more involved and have bigger responsibilities and be a part of the city. I asked my friend Erin, how can I become a bigger part of this? And here I am today. I want to become even more active and help make Hollywood even stronger, more connected, and greater than it already is. I believe in giving back, being present, and helping create positive impact for our residents. It would be an honor to serve and contribute to our community in a greater capacity. Thank you for your consideration.
Thank you, Ms. Khalil. Ms. Khalil, can you just tell me what you do professionally?
I am a legal assistant now for Michael Garcia in Fort Lauderdale. Okay. Yeah.
Thank you. All right. It's always good to know what your business background is. Jesse Hernandez, please come on up. Hello.
I don't see. I don't see.
She's not an applicant, but she has a speaker card, so she's willing to speak. Yes.
Yeah. Hi, mayor, vice mayor, commissioners. I'm Jessie Hernandez. I'm the chair of Hispanic Affairs Council. I'm here to support my board members, Cristina Molinero, Alejandra Palacios, for reappointment, and Yareli Lala. Lalani to be appointed to the board. She already participates in our meetings and will be a great addition to our board. The extensive experience with the Hispanic community make invaluable assets to our council. Currently, we are in the process of organizing the Hispanic Heritage Celebration. And Alejandra and Cristina have been instrumental in the planning and execution of this event. Thank you for your consideration.
Thank you. All right. Cristina Moinello.
I'm sorry.
Yeah, next will be Arely Laloni and then Alejandro Palacios.
Good afternoon, Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioners. I am currently a member of the Hispanic Affairs Council, co-founder of the Hollywood Salsa Fest, and owner of CBA Realty, a business that has been in Hollywood since 2007. I am very excited about the revival of this council, which had been dormant for quite some time. And myself, Chairman Hernandez, and President Chairperson. Excuse me? Chairperson. Chairperson. Oh, excuse me. Chairperson. Chairperson Hernandez, as well as Luna, as we affectionately call her, and Alejandra, have been working steadfastly towards our first event, which will be on October 10, . of the, during Hispanic Heritage Month. So we've already put in a lot of work and we'd really appreciate being able to continue the work that we have started so that we can finish out what we did. We were just appointed and we've been working really hard. So I thank you very much for your time and for your continued support. I'd like to remind all of you that according to the last Census Bureau, Broward County is 34% Hispanic. which is about 600,000 individuals, and I am sure that number is much bigger now because I think the last census was in 2020. So thank you for supporting us, and thank you for letting us continue our labor.
De nada. Gracias. Okay, Yareli Laroni, por favor. I'm going to practice my Spanish here. Buenos.
Sorry, I act like I'm a little nervous, like you guys haven't seen me in a cucaracha outfit. I guess he's very passionate about this. Good evening, mayor, commissioners, city staff, and community members. My name is Yareli Lalani, as you all know me as Luna. Thank you for considering me for appointment for the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board. I am a proud District 5 resident and active member of the Hollywood community. I have long volunteered as an advocate, event organizer, nonprofit volunteer, and MC supporting programs at community centers, arts parks, and city events that bring residents together. As a Latina woman, I value representation and ensuring our community is inclusive and united. I am committed to strengthening our communication, engagement, and cultural winners between residents and local government. In addition to my community involvement, I have also used my voice as a speaker, supporting women facing domestic violence hardships. My passion has always been rooted in helping others, uplifting people through difficult moments, and being a positive voice within the community. Public service is something I genuinely care about deeply, and I would love to have the opportunity to be a changemaker and advocate for the residents throughout Hollywood. I bring passion, dedication, and a strong commitment to service, and I respectfully ask for your consideration. I'm ready to serve and advocate for the residents of Hollywood. My motto is to live to inspire before I expire.
I like it cute.
I would also like to mention that I've already attended a board meeting as a resident, which has helped me familiarize with the process and responsibilities of this advisory board. Thank you for your time and consideration for my appointment for this valuable board.
Thank you, Luna. My Spanish is bad. Alejandra Palacios, Hollywood's best artist.
Hello, everybody. I don't prepare anything, because I'm going to speak with my heart. My name is Alejandra Palacios, and I have been a resident of the city for more than 20 years. I have been participating in the art, in different areas in the art and design, and now I have the opportunity to be part of the Hispanic committee. It's very nice because I'm Latin. And this festival is going to be very important. It has different sectors that we have to take care because a festival has not only music, it has art, it has hands and crafts. It has food. And it needs a lot of work together. I am also part of the art selection committee that we made for the first time during a lot of this. We made the first Hollywood Art Festival. And I think it was a success. And I think I'm an asset to be part because I have a little experience in art. And this festival needs that participation of artists, local artists, and bring this thing that Hollywood needs, art. Yes, the other day I went to Wynwood. And I see how all young people are going to there because they are looking for art. And they gather, and they spend the money, and they spend the time, and they have fun. But if we don't have art, it's impossible we can bring people to here. then I think it's very important. And I think it's starting this movement, this current in this city. I think it's going to be a nice, successful. And we are putting the Committee of Art And the Committee of the Hispanic are putting all of the effort to bring everything we are doing to make this a great festival. I think that's my words. Thank you very much.
Thank you so much. Thank you. All right, ladies and gentlemen. So we just heard from Cristina Monello, Alejandra Palacios, Yareli Leilani, and Marta Khalil. There are also. Do you want to make a motion? Yep. All right, go ahead and let's see if we can all agree and make it quick.
Marta Khalil, Cristina, and Alejandra is the first three. And Yareli? Oh, I didn't do it right. We need two.
Let's pick between Lorena Calejas and Floral Valdez. Does anyone have any background with Ms. Calejas or Ms. Valdez?
I know Lorena.
Okay. Is that so?
I think she'd be great.
Okay.
Lorena, then.
The motion is Christina Monello, Alejandro Palacios, and Marta Calillo as member, and as an alternate member, Yareli Olani and Lorena Calejas.
We got an email from Floribel Valdez also.
Do you want to just?
Change it up then.
So why don't we do it the old way then? Okay, fine. All right, let's do it the old way. All right, let's start with, in reverse order, Commissioner Quintana.
I have Yareli Lalani, Cristina Monelo, and Alejandra Palacios. And then as alternate members, I have Marta Calillo and Lorena Callejas.
Okay. Let's go to Commissioner Biederman.
So I have Yareli Lalani, Cristina Morgnello, and Alejandra Palacios as members and Marta Khalil and Floribel Valdez as alternates.
Okay. Let's go ahead to Commissioner Gruber.
I have
Yareli Lalani, Cristina Monella, Alejandro Palacios as members, and I have Marta Kalil and Feralba Valdez as alternates.
Okay. Let's go to Commissioner, Vice Mayor Kaleri.
So I'm going to go with the majority, which will be Lalani. I wanted all of them in, but Lalani, Christina, Alejandra, Marta, and Lorena.
And Lorena. Yep. Okay.
Commissioner Hernandez. Lalani, Moinello, Palacios, Callejas, and Khalil. Commissioner Shuham.
I have Yareli, Luna, Christina, and Alejandra as members, Marta and Floribal as alternates.
Okay.
It's all you, Mayor.
Well, if we put Floralba Valdez, she'll get appointed. So let's go with that, together with Marta Khalil as alternates, and the same Lalani, Monello, and Palacios for the main members. With lots, Pat? All right.
So please.
So the three members would be Yareli Lalani, Cristina Monello, and Alejandro Palacios, and as alternates would be Marta Khalil and Floralba Valdez. Motion please to accept. That's not counted, but that's okay. Maybe. I'm sorry? Did I miscount? No, I voted for Ms. Valdez, and so she was appointed. Okay. Yeah.
Motion to approve.
Second. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, the item carries unanimously. Last but not least, Parks, gracias a todos. Looking forward to the amazing event that you all are putting the effort to plan. Look, it's going to be amazing. All right. Let's appoint seven members to the Parks, Rec, and Cultural Arts Advisory Board. Looks like we've got... four adult members, and three youth members to choose from. And there are way more than four adult members applying. And so let's go ahead with speaker cards for Parks, Rec, and Cultural Arts.
And Mayor, if I may just say that a former neighbor of mine who I've known for many, many years, very involved in the community, is here today to speak. And she also is a little nervous, but she definitely cares about the city of Hollywood. And like I said, I've known her for over 25 years. So she is Miss Lorraine Holland.
Lorraine Holland. Okay. Great to hear.
She's an adamant tennis player at David Park. Very involved.
All right. All right. Let's hear from Lorraine Holland. Ms. Holland, come on up. Looks like you made an impression on our vice mayor, so that's good.
My husband used to throw her in the pool.
I played pickleball against you a couple of weeks ago. Good evening, mayor, vice mayor, and commissioners. My name is Lorraine Holland, and I am pleased to have applied for the Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Advisory Board. I have lived in Hollywood for over 30 years. All three of my children have attended Nativity and Chaminade. My daughter Kelsey teaches at Nativity, and my two grandsons attend Nativity. We have deep roots in Hollywood, love the community, and want to give back however we can. I have gained many years of leadership experience within the city of Hollywood, serving on the boards of the Hollywood Women's Club, Friends of the Broward Homeless, and the Art and Cultural Center. For more than 25 years, I have been an active member of David Park. As a longtime participant and team captain for David Park in the Broward Women's League tennis program, I've had the opportunity to play at numerous public recreational facilities throughout the county. This experience has given me valuable insight into how community members engage with many Broward parks. I plan to use that experience and insight to enhance our city Hollywood parks. I also have grandchildren who regularly take part in activities at our public parks. Their involvement has reinforced my strong focus on improving logistics, accessibility, and safety for all users. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to give back to our community in this role.
Thank you, Ms. Holland.
Once again, thank you, guys. I know we're only allowed to sit on one.
Luna means moon, doesn't it? Yeah, yeah. All right, I like that.
So Yareli is the Aztec goddess of the moon in Mayan. And I'm half Mexican, half Pakistan. So my dad has the Pakistan flag with the star in the moon. So Luna has always cared after my father passed.
Let us know where we can find a good Pakistani restaurant around here.
For sure. Are we allowed to sit on two boards? Oh, okay.
If you feel like your hands are full and you want to withdraw, you can say that, too. Better that you just not show up. But Parks and Rec and Cultural Arts, if you feel like it.
I do want to devote myself to the Hispanic Affairs Council. Thank you. Thank you.
Appreciate your honesty. It's better than being absent. Alex Hochberger, come on up. for reappointment. And then I have Crystal Marie Gonzalez's card again.
Alex, good to see you. Hi, Alex. Good to see you. Hello. I've met most of you at least at the parks and rec meetings. I'm Alex Hochberger. I first moved here to Hollywood 22 years ago. I've raised my three children here. And before Hollywood as a kid, I grew up in Coral Springs, so I'm one of the rare lifetime Broward County residents. that you have here. I've been on Parks and Rec for five years now. I've authored or co-authored many of the letters you've received. I've been very proud of the work we've done on the board, and I hope to continue with every appointment. And I even built our current letterhead template. Professionally, I work in technology, running a fintech company that is officially headquartered here in Hollywood.
Personally, I'm involved in two nonprofit theater groups that are based here in Hollywood that have received grants from Broward County in the state of Florida.
I'm also a scout leader, currently the charter org rep, but formerly a scout master and cub master. So parks and theater and arts are very core to me on a personal passion level, not professionally. So I hope that we'll be able to continue to say so. As a side note, since I have a little time, I would like to offer a full endorsement to Deborah Hochberger for one of the youth positions. In addition to being her father, I've been her scout leader, watched her grow as she did her Eagle project, where she's installing a little library at the David Blattner Mindfulness Park. Her scout troop has been taking it upon himself to really prioritize some of the little library projects and work with our board. So I'm very proud as one of her scout leaders also. She's got job training for a summer job she picked up, but I know she sent an email. And I'm very proud. So I do hope I can remain. I think we've done a lot of work. One of my big passion projects has been pushing our social media side, encouraging us to work and send active recommendations to the board. and making sure it's been a very congenial group. I even had the pleasure of serving as the vice chair one year. So I hope you'll extend my term by another three years. So thank you very much.
You had us at hello.
What?
You had us at hello. Thanks, Josh. All right. Crystal Marie Gonzalez. Got to have fun around here.
Okay. Hi again. So my name is Crystal Marie Gonzalez, and so tonight I'm here to also express my interest in the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. Safe, clean, and active parks are the heart of our neighborhoods, and we are a major part of what makes Hollywood a great place to live. As our city grows, it is vital that our parks, community centers, and recreational programs serve residents of all ages. I want to serve on this board to help keep our public spaces beautiful, safe, and welcoming for everybody. I'm fully ready to dedicate my time and work to support our city's parks, and I respectfully ask you to consider me for this position. And now before I close, I also want to express gratitude to serve for the Sustainability Advisory Committee the Recreational Advisory Board, and the Educational Advisory Committee. And I'm incredibly honored for those opportunities, and I look forward to giving back to our community. And I also want to give a quick thanks to my mom for always supporting me. And like you said, that I had to worry about driving. She's taking me to all my meetings, literally three meetings a day. She's always there for me.
She's investing in your future, so thank you, mom.
Yes, she's very, very invested. And yeah, that's it. Thank you so much. Have a great day.
Thank you. All right, ladies and gentlemen. We've got four adult members to appoint. I can just mention that I personally know Mary Raynor and her passion. And she sent us all an email. Super caring person. She's a reappointment application.
And also De Torres, very dedicated individual.
OK. And we heard from Alex and also from Lorraine.
Yep.
So maybe that makes the four of the top easy. And then we have two choices, actually three if you include Crystal Marie.
I'll make that motion.
Make the three. All right. So the motion is for Ettore De Torres, Alex Hochberger, Lorraine Holland, and Mary Raynor.
Yep.
Followed by Deborah Hochberger, Zachary Manassi, and Crystal Marie for youth members. Motion to approve?
Second.
All right, so that was a motion from Commissioner Shuham, a second from Commissioner Hernandez. All those in favor, say aye. Aye. Any opposed? Hearing none, item carries unanimously.
Congratulations.
Madam Manager, we are done. What about the youth? Were we appointing all three? Yeah, we did. And we added Crystal Marie as the third.
Got it.
All right, this meeting is adjourned. Thank you all for your willingness to serve the city of Hollywood and contribute.
