Good evening, city of Shaunie. I'm Doug Danahoo, communications director for the city, bringing you the wrap-up of the city council meeting from this Monday, March 9th, 2026. Council member Sierra Whitted was absent this evening, so votes will be based on the seven council members in attendance. Public comment from the floor lasted from 603 to 609. The council approved the renewal of medical, dental, and vision benefits for city employees for the 2026 to 2027 benefits year starting on July 1st, 2026 on a 7 to zero vote. The council also authorized the staff to bid on the Mackini drive street improvement project from Lucille Road on the west to Neman on the east. The council approved a number of other public works projects, all on 7 to zero votes. Construction and engineering services for storm water pipe repairs at Monaceel East and 51st Place and under the Mill Valley High School football field. Land easement acquisition for the 51st Street improvement project and engineering services for design and easement acquisitions for the upcoming Kanan Street SIP between 55th Street and Johnson Drive in 2027. Public works director Kevin Manning provided an update on upcoming grant deadlines through the Mid America Regional Council that staff is working on, including three major roads in the city, plus addressing transportation alternatives in different areas of Shaune. And during council committee, police chief Sam Larson was on hand to provide a review of the 2025 year for the Shaunie Police Department. The department saw a drop in calls for service from 2024 to 2025 with the largest being calls for car crashes, assisting outside agencies, welfare checks, suspicious activities, and theft accounting for the top five. Looking into the future, Chief Larson highlighted upcoming challenges of retirements, recruiting to fill officer openings, mental health, consumer related calls, increasing operational costs, and the World Cup this coming summer. Additionally, plans for the future include the justice center expansion project, planning for
succession in the department, the strategic planning and growing staff to mean an increasing population in the city of Shaune. The Shaunie city council will be back in session on Monday, March 23rd, starting at 6 p.m. in council chambers here at city hall in downtown Shaune.
