Hello, I'm Bedford Mayor Sam Craig with the latest edition of From the Mayor's Desk. At the Bedford City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m., the Council will discuss and consider adopting a City Wheel Tax. This discussion follows changes made by the State of Indiana through House Enrolled Act 1461. Under the new law, cities that adopt a wheel tax become eligible for additional state transportation funding through the Indiana Department of Transportation. For Medford, that could mean additional $80,000 to $120,000 annually to help improve and maintain our roads. Currently, a county wheel tax is already in place. If Bedford adopts a city wheel tax, it would replace the county wheel tax paid by residents in the city of Bedford. Residents will not see a change in the amount they pay. The primary difference is that those funds would be direct straight to the city of Bedford rather than passing through the county. If approved by the City Council, these changes would take effect in 2027. Adopting a City Wheel Tax would ensure Bedford remains eligible for additional state funding programs such as Lane Miles that support road paving and transportation improvements which require a City Wheel Tax to be in place.
