Hello, my name is Rachel Sackett-Pottman and I am here as a survivor, fighter and activist against stage 3 liver cancer and as a proud resident of Arizona for 20 years. Thank you Mayor Hartke and the entire municipal council of Chandler to recognize once again September as a month of awareness of breast cancer. Arizona is where I built my adult life, my marriage, my career and my survival. Receiving this proclamation from the city of Chandler is therefore extremely significant for me. Breast cancer is one of the most deadly in women, yet it remains one of the least financed and the least understood. More than 21,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed this year, and more than 12,000 will lose their lives. This is a mortality rate of nearly 60.1%. Most women are diagnosed at an advanced stage because the symptoms are vague and there are no early screening tests. For many of us, this lack of awareness makes the difference between detecting cancer early and fighting for our survival. I was diagnosed at 38 years old with a rare subtype called Bagrad serous cancer, a chronic disease without standard treatment and with a recidivism rate of 85.5. Like many women, I have lost the ability to have biological children, dreams that my husband and I had and that have not come true. And this year, I suffered very deep losses due to this disease, losses that weigh heavily and remind me why awareness is so urgent. Each light shatters, each message on social networks and each proclamation, including this one, helps someone to recognize the symptoms earlier and brings a necessary awareness to this insidious disease. These actions really save lives and honor the women we lost way too early. Thank you for being by the side of survivors, for honoring the women we have lost and for helping to protect families throughout the city of Chandler and the great state of Arizona. I would like to simply thank the mayor, the council members, the city staff, the volunteers and the merchants who participated in our event of the launch of the Hispanic Heritage Month last weekend. Our Contigo event has become one of our flagship events here in Chandler and it started, I believe, in 2021. Our team will be able to correct me if necessary, but every year it is getting bigger and bigger. This year, for the first time, we collaborated with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of the East Valley, the City of Chandler and the Mexican Consulate here in Phoenix, which gave rise to a great event. I would like to thank these organizations, as well as the Honorable Georges Cas, the President, for coming to celebrate the ceremony of the Gritto. It was a wonderful event, very followed, and as I said, it never ceases to take on an importance each year.
