City Council - Regular Meeting

Good evening, City of Shawnee. I'm Doug Donahue, Communications Director for the City, bringing you the wrap-up of the City Council meeting from this Monday, August 10, 2026. First up, the City Council considered an ordinance to rezone the 7700 block of Renner Road from planned unit office commercial to residential high-rise for a proposed apartment development known as RecCentric. The complex would include 277 apartment units and stand four to five stories high, including two stories of underground parking. The council approved the ordinance unanimously. The council also unanimously approved the ordinance to rezone 17 acres of property from commercial highway back to agriculture at the southeast corner of Renner and 59th Terrace. The council also discussed the use of fireworks on July 3rd and 4th in the city of Shawnee, which has been legal since 2022, and the sale of fireworks from June 27th to July 4th, which has been legal since 2023. The council voted 7-1 to repeal Shawnee Municipal Code 5.70 to ban the use and sales of fireworks in the city of Shawnee. The council is back in session on Monday, August 24th, starting at 6 p.m. in council chambers. That meeting's agenda includes the public hearings for both the city's decision to exceed the revenue neutral rate and the 2027 operational budget.
