We're doing well. We can always get more hounds. We had a few feeders that move out of our village, so we are short. So some of us are taking more days. But the cats are being fed every day, weather permitting. And everything is going okay. We... We have lost a few cats. I counted last week and we have about 65 cats in the whole island. That is counting Coco and the one by GBB. So a total of 65 cats. We have like two or three that have been MIA for a long time so we assume that they I don't know no longer with us from 300 cats to 65 interesting yep those are just as many cats and you know I feed them so it's good I mean not that they are Yeah, and I feed the whole island for four days a week. So that's how I know we have 65 because I have content. I counted that myself.

Hopefully we'll get to zero just for the sake of them. They shouldn't be in the streets.

okay adoption event and sometime february or march yeah oh yeah we want to do it before spring break but a little bit after the holidays um so i'll be talking to you we're gonna have animal um mammy did animal services come out with some dogs because you were there maria for national night out and i had invited mammy date animal services and they brought out a couple of um babies so we want to do an actual event and we were thinking about having like a um like a runway show like the best costume um and also educate our residents on the poop free and and hopefully you can um try to recruit um members to feed the cats

So Maria, so it's just to confirm, because if we have 5,000, we decided since we don't have any more TNR to do, and if we have, oh, Doris, perfect. And if we have, we're gonna, we're gonna try to, to, you know, to, to do it ourselves. But the question for the 5,000, hello, Doris. Hi guys, sorry I'm late. No, thank you for being here. I was asking Maria about the budget because I don't know if we have only $2,500 or if we have the $5,000. The idea was $2,500 for the food, $2,500 for the TNR, but we're no longer TNRing anyone because everyone is like already fixed. So we were wondering if it would be possible to apply that for food.

the budget, I believe, is still $5,000. We were hoping to go up, but, you know, I think that it's still a five. I need to double check that for you.

And that's one thing I wanted to talk to you guys about was like the situation. You know, the more I learn about these things, you know, I have more questions sometimes. Right. So in North Bay Island, I still see cats that are not fixed and I still know of cats in Harbor Island that are not fixed. And I know we're running into a situation of volunteer and trapping. I know one of the things that I'm working on is part of the work for the youth board that I'm hoping to start next month is with some teens that have mentioned to me that they're highly interested in helping the animal welfare group. And these are teens that are like 16 years and older who want to volunteer and be part of the feedings and be part of the rescuing of these animals. And then themselves can also fundraise, do events in their own schools to help us fundraise for, you know, programs. But when you're saying that there's no need, I'm just questioning whether we're talking about Terrestrial Island as a need or... Or we're looking at this in the entire city. Is there a plan for the other islands to double check? Because I know of babies that were found in Harbor Island recently. So that's what I'm asking.

OK. So let me, can I answer? Of course, take over. Yeah. OK. We don't have the hands to be able to feed beyond Treasure Island. In Treasure Island, everybody's fixed. We have 65 cats on Treasure Island. We welcome anybody who can help. TNRing the other cats in the other islands that we cannot humanly reach. The issue, the main issue we could assist on TNRing, the main issue that we have is that we do not have a space where to keep the cat. after they leave the veterinarian, after they are fixed. When we take the cats to Pets and Beds, they fix the cat and they give it to you the same day. That cat cannot be taken back to the community until like 48 hours after the surgery. We just don't have a space where to have that cat. None of us can foster that cat in our apartments and in our homes. So we are on a dead end. We would like to go to other islands. We would like to help with the TNR process in the other islands, but we don't have space. people and we don't have a place where to keep the cat after it's been with surgery. So if there is a suggestion from the city, from you, from the other people that you talk to on how can we you know, conquer this hurdle, we're super happy to train people and to tell them how we do the feedings, how we pick up the food after it's done. But we can't. We can't.

And I appreciate that honesty because that's the only way we're going to confront this issue. It's head on. My question then to follow up with your comment is, Actually, it's a two-part question. The first one is, once you trap the animal, is that also part of the problem? Is where do we put the animal while we wait for that vet's office, right? And we spoke about Pelican Harbor as a possible location. And they say no. So you actually checked with them?

Yeah, Neil checked and he wasn't able, it wasn't an option.

The other question I have is, once the animal has gone through surgery, and I know that males and females are different in their treatment. What is the type of space they would need? What would be an environment that is not a person's home that they could be kept at?

It's not that complicated. It could be a storage room. It could be a place the size of the storage area they have in the building department where you have the office supplies.

And then that's one of the reasons why I was asking is because I'm touring the brand new area that we're hoping to use for public works, which is not far away from North Village. And I'm thinking... Maybe we can find a cubbyhole within the public works department where we can host our pets, or not pets, but our community animals overnight or for a day or two, knowing that a volunteer is responsible to making sure there's food, there's water, the animal is still... And we'll clean them up and we have a litter box.

I can even...

I can even donate a Nest camera that is permanently put there, as long as we have Wi-Fi, where you can monitor the animal at distance, a long distance. If something goes wrong, you can see, check the camera.

That would be amazing. Absolutely, absolutely. And we will completely take over. And between us, we will make sure that somebody goes and feeds the cat. A few times. And actually, it will help us immensely because as the cats are aging, it also becomes there. Sometimes the issue is that the cat is sick and we need to take it to the vet and they need to have, you know, an abscess removed from their mouth. And they need a place. It's just a small place.

I'm going to check with Body Works and see what spaces they do have in their new area. Because it's something that, I mean, that's kind of like, it would be amazing if they can find a little room. I mean, obviously, we don't want to put them in a dark closet where there's no light. But, you know, maybe somewhere where we can have them. Yes.

I took one time when Maria gave me one. I didn't have Einstein at the time. So I kept here after the surgery in a bathroom.

I've done that too. I've done it years back.

But now with another cat. I cannot do also because you don't know if they keep you any sickness inside the house. I think the space is very small.

Let me let me find out because maybe they can give us an allowance of a space or we can keep cages and they're under AC. You know, it can even be a shared space. I don't know. Again, I'm speaking without seeing the area, but even if it's an open room and we just stack cages up. We know that could be another option. Right. So let me look into that. So that's my homework. I will check with Frank. He's going to take me to tour the space and we'll we'll look into that.

That would be amazing because it's really an issue and we would like to do more. But yeah, a small space is all we will need.

To keep it as you're doing it right now, Maria, do not expand things that we cannot hold, okay? What you're doing, I'm just thinking as I plan this youth board, that could be one of the things that I present to the students who are hopefully coming from many different areas, who have their cars, who may even have their own animal foundation they might want to start as a project. And take on maybe, you know, one little area at a time. And maybe we'll build a robust thing after. But it's just not an expectation that I'm telling you. Oh, let's start going into these islands right away. Keep doing what you're doing. And then we'll build on what you have little by little, hopefully with the help. The help not just with the youth board, but, you know, maybe they can start advertising themselves for volunteers and get people involved.

Once I have a youth board, trust me, I'm bringing you guys in. But that's not going to happen for... So November is my prayer, is that the city approves the youth board so that we can start it. And it will probably start... You know, we'll get the applications in around summer of next year. And the board itself will start in November with the new year. Next year. Yeah. So that's what I'm saying. It's not like I'm rushing you into this. So that's that that's that far. And and then I wanted to mention about the food, because as you've seen, we're very delayed with the water dispensers. and and trust me that frank hasn't forgotten but it's just the prairie level every time he opens a folder that has to do with the village there's something worse and wrong and he has to fix it so the prairie has gone long but it's still on his pile he showed it to him he goes here you are he you're in the pile like he never left his mind or his desk But I wanted to bring up, what is the possibility of buying wet food in combination with dry food to help us alleviate a little bit of this, especially in the dry season that we're coming into?

Well, I mean, we are buying huge amounts of wet food from our pockets, right? Yeah, that's not right. They're being fed, but at least when I feed, we mix wet food with dry food, and that's what they eat. So they eat a combination of the two foods. So it helps them with their hydration because wet food is hydrating.

When the village buys the food, and I say village, it's probably Franco and I'm buying the food. When he gets the food, do you guys tell him, here's the food we need and how much we need? Or you're just told, by the way, here's food. Because you don't want your $2,500 to be drained without knowing exactly what amount.

No, but what we get is eight bags of dry food. And I give one to each feeder. And then I buy from my end. I buy for the other feeders that they don't have a bag. So I cannot sacrifice dry food for wet food because they won't have anything to give them.

I was going to tell you maybe one month you can buy dried and the next one you can order, you know, the wet one. And that way you can combine them.

But it would be kind of the same, I guess, because if they, you know.

Yeah, but that's what I don't understand. So if you spend $100 in dry food and $100 in wet food, Frank doesn't care what you're buying as long as it's X amount of money. That's when I don't understand the price difference. Can you feed as many cats with wet food prices as you can with wet food prices? No.

No, no, no. Wet food is always more expensive than dry food. And it doesn't yield as much.

And what we have for dry food, which is eight bags per month, we need it.

I wonder if we can reach out to Chewy, which is a Florida-based company, maybe from the village, and writing a letter and saying, you know, we have X amount of budget to feed all these cats. Would you help us with the food that we need and we need a...

We tried that in the past, but they want to fight for one. We do have one, but it's like, I don't know how that would work.

It's okay. I just, you know, I want to, Maria's here and Jessica are here and I think Those are the most important components for our safety. It's our compliance and our police officers protecting the people who volunteer. So I wanted you to mention about this vest so that they're also aware that they're going to be seeing this because you guys feed at nighttime. Every time I've gone out, there is always a nighttime or I haven't done the early morning feedings, but they're dark, especially now with winter arriving. So maybe you want to just let them know whether you're doing it or not. So they're also in the lookout.

Yeah, I see the police every morning. I feed in the mornings, 5 a.m., and I see the patrol several times during my feeding. And I appreciate it so much because, I mean, it makes you feel extra safe. I mean, our island is super safe, but it's comforting to know that they are around. So I see them every day I feed.

And Jessica, they're always around at night. I see many police cars.

I go very late. They're always around. Are the new officers aware of our program?

You know, that is a great question, Commissioner. If they are not, I will make it a point tomorrow to send out an email to all our new officers because you make a very valid point. You know, during their training FTO, they should be introduced to, you know, everything. However, now that you bring that up, I'll send out an email tomorrow to make sure that they're aware of this program.

Yeah, it's not just that they know that there are people doing feedings, but they should know that they can see a cat that is hurt, a dog that is hurt, animals that are hurt. Who do they need to reach out to if they find a lost animal? What is the protocol in our neighborhood? How are we located? Because putting it out in this group, many people have found their pets that way just by reaching out to our group. So there's those angles of that conversation just so that they are aware that we're all in the lookout and it's not just cats, it's dogs, any animal, basically. If you have a hurt animal, if it's a bird, we have the Pelican Rescue Station. Right. They will accept animals like turtles. Right. also squirrels, things like that.

Right. So as far Yeah, you're correct about the pelicans as far which by the way, we have rescued several and we've I personally myself have rescued a pelican I've taken it to Pelican Harbor. But as far as dogs, we it's crazy how many dogs we get that are actually found and they call us or that we find ourselves I found a couple And what I did was, in one of my events, I asked Animal Day Services to provide us with leashes. And each officer has a leash. That way, if they encounter a lost or stranded dog, they can, you know, they're able to hold them for a while. Unfortunately, now with animal, with Miami-Dade Animal Services, because they're so overpopulated, They do not come out unless the dog is aggressive and or injured. If the dog is lost, they will not come out.

Yes. So that is great. However, what I've encountered when we've had lost dogs and we are able to kind of scan the dog is... A lot of times people don't update their records. For instance, the last song we had was a beautiful German Shepherd. I had Animal Date, Miami Date come out. They scanned them. However, the information was not up to date. The phone number. Yeah.

Or even the colors. You know how many dogs have found with a color, but with no information on it. It's like, people are so silly. But I don't know if you find that helpful. I could probably include that in my budget. That would be great. Yeah. Let's do that. Let's do that. Because we talked about it as a group before. But last year I was so, you know, brand new to all of this. And I was like very stingy with every penny in my budget. But, you know, and I'm not saying I'm not going to be just as stingy. But it's one of those things that it was bugging me since last year. And I wanted to make it happen this year. So let's do that. I'm going to look it up. I don't know if you guys have a preference or if a vet can recommend one that I can purchase because there's a million different price levels on it. But definitely, Commissioner, to touch on your suggestion, they do know to reach out to Miami-Dade Animal Services for a lost dog. We try our best to post on social media. I always reach out to Julie to post on social media. We try our best. But we have had instances where animal control does come out. We did have a happy case where a... animals, Miami-Dade did come out. They took the dog with them and the owner saw my social media posts, reached out to me and I was able to tell them that their dog was en route to Miami-Dade Ambulance Services. They went over there and they were able to get their lost dogging. So we, honestly, we try our best to, you know, find the owners, but I will send out an email tomorrow to our new officers to let them know about the feeding program. Maria, question for you. If, for instance, we find an injured pack or would you like to be contacted or how would you like for us to proceed with that?

I mean, I can always, if I'm home, if I'm not alone with the baby, I can always try to help by taking the cat to pets and beds. That's all I can do because I cannot foster. I have a lot.
