It may not feel like summer just yet, but we're already getting ready for it this week. We're out at the Gilly Poolool as our team begins prepping for opening day and we've also got a great show coming up at the Park Theater. Hey everyone, I'm Nolan Ming, city administrator here at the city of Mcmminville and welcome to Inside McMinnville, your inside look at what's happening across our city. Right now, our parks and recreation team is getting Gillyool ready for the season. There's a lot that happens behind the scenes from cleaning and repairs to getting the water balanced and systems ready so everything is safe and ready for families this summer. I'm joined by Justin Scott, our parks and recck director. Justin, walk us through what it takes to get the pool up and running for the swimming season.
Sure. So, yeah, as you can see, we've got a massive body of water here. It's about almost 800,000 gallons of water. Wow. Uh so, we start with the water itself. We try to balance it. So, we try to get our alkalinity, our pH, uh, our chlorine balanced. Once we get those things going, then we start working on vacuuming the bottom of the pool. We have a lot of leaves, a lot of sand, a lot of dirt, debris coming off the deck. So, we focus on it first because swim team typically wants to get started sometime midappril. Okay. Of course, the pool isn't going to open until May 23rd. All right. Uh, which is Memorial Day weekend. Uh, and then we're open for 10 weeks.
Yeah. Uh but we focus on the pool itself and then we start on the deck. So we have about 200 roughly deck chairs that go out on the deck. Uh but before we put those out, we'll pressure wash all this concrete. It's roughly 20,000 square foot of concrete. So it's it's a it's a lot. Yeah. Uh then we work on our slides. Uh we check all of our features. We make sure all our features are working properly. As you can see, we have a lot of features. Um a lot of sprays, things like that. Uh we go into check in all of our railings, our tile, our grates. Uh we clean the bathrooms. Those are winterized. Okay.
So we dewinterize those. Turn the water on. We deep clean those. Just make sure that everything is working before the health inspector comes. Wow. That's a lot of work, Justin. Thanks for everything that you and your team do. Yes, sir. To get this pool ready for the swimming season. We appreciate it.
Thank you. A lot of work goes into this before the gates ever open, but it all leads to one goal, creating a great experience for our community. From summer prep here at the pool to what's happening downtown. We've also got something exciting coming up with the Park Theater. The players are bringing a live performance to McMinnville. The Park Theater continues to be a major part of our downtown, bringing entertainment, events, and energy to the community. I've got Joe Harvey here, Park Theater Manager. He's going to tell us all about the players and what you can expect. Uh yeah. Uh this is going to be a great show. Uh we've got Keith Howland uh formerly of Chicago, Jeff Coffee, formerly of Chicago as well. Rob Arthur, who is uh been Peter Frampton's band leader, and Ed Toth, who is the drummer for the Doobie Brothers. These guys are going to come here and they're going to put on a great show. They're going to have a full horn line with them, too. Anybody who loves great musicianship, this is going to be a great show for you.
If you haven't been to the Park Theater, this is a great show. Come check it out. Thanks, Joe. And one quick update, city offices will be closed in observance of Good Friday this week. Garbage normally picked up on Friday will be collected on Monday, April 6th. That's your look inside McMinnville. We'll see you next week.
