IN THE JEWISH TRADITION BY BEGIN WITH BLESSINGS THANKING GOD FOR GRAND WONDERS AND FOR THE ORDER MIRACLES WE OVERLOOK. THE ABILITY TO RISE, TO BREATHE, TO SEE, TO STAND, TO BEGIN AGAIN. A FEW MILES FROM HERE STANDS A STATUE HONOR IING SUGIHARA THE JAPANESE DIPLOMAT WHO SAVED THOUSANDS OF JEWS DURING THE HOLOCAUST INCLUDING MEMBERS OF MY OWN FAMILY. BECAUSE ONE PERSON CHOSE COURAGE OVER INDIFFERENCE I STAND HERE TODAY. SOMEONE WHO SURVIVED CANCER ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS I KNOW PERSONALLY THAT LIFE ITSELF IS NEVER SOMETHING TO TAKE FOR GRANTED. SO LET US PRAY. THEY WERE TRANSFERRED TO THE AGOURA CARE CENTER WITH THEIR MOM WHEN THEY WERE JUST A FEW DAYS OLD. AFTER BATTLING A ROUGH START, OVERCOMING ILLNESS, THESE PUPS ARE NOW HEALTHY, HAPPY, AND READY TO FIND THEIR FOR EVER HOMES. THIS PUTS COUNTY EMPLOYEES IN A DIFFICULT POSITION OF TRYING TO ENFORCE THE LAW AND PROTECT PATIENT RIGHTS. AT THE SAME TIME COUNTY EMPLOYEES ARE FACING THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING ACCUSED OF BE ON STRUGS OF JUSTICE. I WAS PROUD TO SEE THE BOARD APPROVE MY MOTION WITH SUPERVISOR MITCHELL TO CO-ALIGN WITH SENATE,81 BY JESSE ARGUIN FROM BERKELEY AND PROTECT THE IMMIGRANT RIGHTS TO HEALTHCARE. AND THESE ARE ALL WITHIN A SINGLE BLOCK. RESIDENTS HAVE EXPRESSED CONCERN THAT THE PROPOSED HEIGHT AND DENSITY APPEAR INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS. SO BY DEFINING "ACUTELY LOW," FIRST OF ALL IT'S NOW IN STATE LAW AND CODIFYING IT IN OUR CODE. AND THEN INCENTIVIZING IT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO MAKE IT FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE FOR SOMEONE TO ACTUALLY DO A PROJECT. HE EARNED DEGREES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH AND USC. HE THEN ESTABLISHED A DISTINGUISHED LAW PRACTICE IN ARCADIA WHERE HE WORKED UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT AT THE AGE OF 94. JIM SERVED EIGHT YEARS ON THE ARCADIA CITY COUNCIL INCLUDING A TERM AS MAYOR AND LENT HIS LEADERSHIP TO NUMEROUS CHARITABLE CIVIC AND FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS. HE WAS TWICE HONORED AS ARCADIA CITIZEN OF THE YEAR IN RECOGNITION OF HIS INTEGRITY, LEADERSHIP, AND ENDURING DEDICATION TO PUBLIC SERVICE.
