Senior Resources Committee - Regular Meeting

So the meeting's called to order. Could someone make a motion to open our meeting? I motion. And a second? Yeah, second. Second hearing then. So we're going to take our minutes off of the video only because we are very short in our membership tonight. We know a few people. Here we have the quorum. We have members. You know, pretty much tonight we're just going to be just talking about the different things, so we won't be able to vote on anything tonight, but at least we can technically, because we have some, we don't have any of our alternates here. But, yeah, so we'll move forward. Yeah, so do we have a quorum, though, because are any of our alternates here? No. I'm an alternate. Oh, you're an alternate. How many do we need for? We need probably about ten of us probably. We should have probably six.

So we have four members and one alternate would be five. Yeah, I think we'd be all right. So, yeah, in fact, we'll do, yeah.

We have reduced cap. You're right. All right. So thank you everyone for being here today. I know it is hard in the summer. But we'll be able to talk about the important things that we need to. With Old Home Day coming up, the Senior Expo, and I do think some people are going to drift in. So our Valerie is here. Kelly did notify us that she wouldn't be. Lori is absent at this time. Ari Wong is here. Patrick, Phil, Tim. Marydell, we heard from, and she was unable to attend. Marianne is here. And our John, Elizabeth, Deb presently is not here. And Lois is here. Tom did send an email that he wouldn't be able to make it tonight. And Councillor Bouchard not present at the moment. And they did have a meeting last night. So we will start. And does everyone have a copy of our agenda now?

Oh, no worries. We've got some floating now. It's pretty standard. Oh, here it is. Never mind. Sorry. So looking at the agenda, if everyone could take a minute to also just review the minutes. I went through them. I thought, as always, Kelly really captures everything that we need to talk about, but it needs a few minutes to go through it. And then it goes on to the back. We've talked about a lot of things. We had a full house, and we really covered a lot. And because we did, there were great rewards at the council meeting. So unless someone has noticed something, and you can continue to look to it, but I'll ask for a motion to accept our minutes. Thank you. Thank you. And someone to second them? Thank you, John. And all in favor? Aye. Perfect. No worries. So then let's see, we take, and then jumping right to what our subcommittee, our committee talked about this at our last meeting in July. The subcommittee ran with it. You know, John, Marianne, Maridel, and meeting with our town manager. There was a plan. It was executed. The video that was created, I hope everyone had a chance to see that. Just what you can do in a couple minutes, the power of it. And Marianne, you really, you know, you took the summary that Marydell and John, you know, they did all of it. Yeah, it was a wonderful summary. You captured the councillors. It was beautiful to see that all the councillors were united on this one. One good question was asked by Councillor Combs. everyone else was really in favor of this, and I think looking forward to it. The only little glitch was we did have two representatives from CARF up on the screen, and when we talked about when this could be put into play, their first thought, and again, there was a lot of technical problems going back and forth, but they were thinking in the year 27-28, and then we all kind of jumped in, and Marianne just took the reins with that, and And then quickly, the person that was speaking realized, talking to Tracy, who was next to him, that no, this would be starting immediately. Our goal is August. And then moving forward, John and Marianne and Maridel met again with our town manager. And I was there just briefly, and it seemed like a very positive meeting. But I'll lead to Marianne and to John. And also, thank you, Lois. You were at the meeting, the council meeting. Elizabeth was there. I don't know if I'm missing anyone. I could see us all on the screen, but thank you both for coming.

It really was. It was exceptional. It does just show us when we all were together. It's been in multiple newspapers, too.

The front page of the Dairy News. The Eagle Tribune, because you have that up at the Senior Center. I didn't get the one at Dairy Times. Dated the 23rd. But I think that would have been too late to make that issue. And it wasn't in the following week. So we'll have to follow up on that.

And Marianne wrote me a short article to put in the Senior Center newsletter for September, October. I released that to them today.

That's wonderful. And I do have a copy of that here, too. That was very well done, because it's just that more condensed for the newsletter. Can I ask a question? Sure.

When is the New Times for CART supposed to start? That's what we're trying to do. We're shooting for this month. Okay, because I thought when we were at the town council meeting that night, it was going to start August 1st, but I'm wrong.

There has to be an agreement first.

I think, but I'm not certain, that he said we could start right away.

This is a big however, I think. The town manager spoke to Tracy, I want to say over a week ago, about her supplying us with a document or bill or whatever. That's so uncomfortable. This morning, he hadn't received anything. So I suggested that perhaps one of the things we could do to try to move this along was to have someone call him up and tell him that we wanted I'm not necessarily going to do this, but to call them up and find out if they would have a bus available on the day of Old Home Day so we could put a banner on the bus with the start date. So I sent that and I basically said, is there anything else you can think of that we can give a response? So I sent him a text message the next morning. He emailed back and he says, I will try. he was going to call I haven't heard back from him today but I'm very nervous about I'm still nervous about getting this going you know you have a great idea though the school has fans that we borrow for the elections and I would bet that we would be able to

borrow one of them unless they're all being used for Old Town Day. That's a great idea. It would be nice to have a cart, the cart. Oh, I thought you meant you wanted to have it in the parade or something. Oh, no, I saw. You just meant the cart. Yeah. Yeah. And they've done that before at the Expo, so, yeah.

It's actually happening with secondary. I wanted to use it to call them up. Yeah. Put some pressure on them for getting this accepted, so.

I was out walking on Friday and my neighbor was out there and I know I knew she was waiting for CART so I sat and I chatted with her and when the CART bus came this was Friday again from that meeting I was under the impression that CART was starting this week that's what I thought so I asked the gentleman If he was aware of that and he said no he was not and I said wow, you know Friday It's gonna start money. You don't know he said that's not unusual that I wasn't told Type of those different drivers to the different drivers and then he said I was shocked. It didn't happen a lot sooner I was shocked it didn't happen immediately after dairy had it because they're dairies had it for for quite You know And then he went on to comment that they get very few people using CART. That was his comment. They don't have a lot of people using CART. When you sent that out, I think it's great. I think we need the PR. We really do.

That's the biggest thing, 100%. That's the big thing.

The account manager, when he had the meeting, that was the crux of what he was saying. That's exactly what he was saying. As much publicity as possible so we don't end up getting pushed back.

Right, yeah. That's why I created that spreadsheet.

But I was shocked when he said that. that they don't get many people using CART. And I said that to him. I said, I'm shocked. I said, what you say, because you don't have to be a senior. You could be a young disabled person and you could use it. Or lost your license for DWI. But the day he picked her up, she was the only one on the bus.

I do think this is that opportunity to promote it. And that was Sean's really key thing that he seemed to be saying that, OK, we've got it now. It's going to happen, but we've got to promote it because next year we want to be able to show that the use was there. And promote it and really push the new owners. Exactly, 100%. That's why I was thinking about a van in the parade with a big banner advertising.

I think that's a great idea.

I wonder if we can pull it off. Yeah, we can try.

I tried to get the trolley, and that was not available. I called in January or February. They have some wedding thing they're doing. I'm sure some of my seniors ride on it, but those buses, they have the black windows and stuff, so.

Do they have the black windows, the school ones, too?

Well, they're mixed. They have mixed vehicles.

Yeah, but we can look into it. We're so close to Old Home Day now, that's the only thing. It's hard to believe it's the 4th, and it'll start around the 14th. But let's see what we can find. I'll do what I can, reach out to Katie Sullivan in Amity and see. It might be a long shot to actually get something in the parade at this point, but to have CART there. John, are you going to be trying to reach out to Tracy about that to see if we can just get a display here?

I'm going to speak to the manager tomorrow and see what transpires. Excellent. It's really kind of in his court right now, you know, because he's waiting for, you know, effectively a bill. Yeah.

I mean, what's the holdup at the Manchester Transit Authority? That's the $64 bill. They all on vacation?

Right. Did you read something about a poster we wanted to maybe put at our booth? Right. What if we can't get the actual bus? What if we just took a picture of the current bus and blew it up on a poster board and then wrote on the poster? We could do both. Yeah.

Well, that's an excellent idea. That would be . We could blow up an article, your short article, so people don't have a lot to read. We can blow that up.

Yeah, I expanded on it a little bit.

And she put a picture with it. Yeah. It really looks good. I remember there was something, maybe it was one of the senior expos when CART was there, and they had a big poster or something. John, could you reach out to Tracy, or I could call her tomorrow and just, because I was also thinking, we're jumping around a lot, but do they have any little gotchki kind of things that we could pass out, like CART and the telephone number on it? They have magnets.

Balls and cars, magnets? Yeah, they have refrigerator magnets. We don't have, we probably have half a dozen right now. Where do they come from? No, but could we get some from CAR? I don't know. I haven't asked for them for a while. Do you talk to Tracy directly? Not very often. No, it's hard to get through.

It's very, I could email her as well. Okay. Yeah, why don't we? And ask her if they have any posters or anything, because they must have something through the transit too, and then we'll have to put our information on it. Right. My concern a little bit is that we're here now, and then really we don't have another time we're together. Whenever on my cell phone. You know, good points with that. But anything we can hand out, and Valerie has a surprise for us too about something that we could hand out. So if we jump down to number four, John, that was a quick little recap, Marianne, on the meeting with our town manager. And he was very positive, but social media, spreading the word, was the biggest thing that we have to do to make people aware of it.

So when we get a start date, if people saw the spreadsheet, if anybody has any contacts and wants to make contact regarding CART with whatever we can hand out to them, You know, if you just send it to me via email, I'll add your name and whatnot to the spreadsheet.

And this is the spreadsheet that Marianne made up, and it goes in here. Oh, yeah, I printed it the other way. Oh, you did? Oh, I printed it this way. All right. But if anyone would like one of these, Marianne, why don't you explain a little bit about what you got that one. I'll give you the bottom. I'll keep it on top.

Yeah, I just tried to think of... all the different places where we could advertise. So I made up this list. Now, some of these might, you know, where it says hospitals, we've got more than one, or medical things, assisted living communities, there's more than one. If you just put a name and the date you contacted them, and the comments, like what the name of the place was, if there's more than one of them, so we can just keep track so that we're not sending two people.

What is it that we're asking of them?

Just to telling them about the cart hours, the new hours, and if they could please give the information to anyone who needs transportation. Got it. Yeah. It's not just elderly. It's disabled. It's anybody that doesn't have a driver's license, lost their license, doesn't have a car, you know, a particular day. It's open to everyone, basically.

I think this is a great list, by the way.

Yeah, it's exceptional.

The start date, I think, is key. Yes. But in addition to that, what we can do ahead of time is look at because this is, for me, this is just like we were doing the $5 problem around all these people. Yeah, exactly. But they all were all, you know, at least all the businesses and medical people on the 102 areas, all of those were more than willing to put up the thing on their baskets. The flyers. People refused. So we probably need something, you know, I don't know if this is one thing or a couple things that we can hand out to these people.

Once we know the start date.

Yeah, we have to have a start date, which is critical.

And I think in preparation for old home days, we have to be prepared. There's a chance we're not going to have a start date officially. I hope we do, but we may or may not. going to almost have to have like the thought of a yeah a poster ready just saying coming soon you know big banner and to get people excited and thinking about it hopefully we'll have a date but it could you know i'm not sure i mean missing out on not being able to advertise this one i just i just wrote it doesn't make sense no it doesn't you're right yeah it would be good to be able to tell them

historic date. If we don't have that, if we have magnets to, you know, for transportation.

Just to promote it, you're right.

To promote the existing hours.

And get more people just to utilize what we have.

And then go back and say, now we've expanded it.

And people like things like magnets to collect. They do.

Yeah, that's... I just wrote, I hope your summer is going well to Tracy. We are at our senior resource committee meeting tonight. Well, for our booth, we don't really need to. But with the cart, I think if Tracy comes back tomorrow or Thursday, Wednesday, says that they can have a vehicle there for us, a van, then we have to probably immediately reach out to Jersey. They're pretty booked on the weekends, too, with other events that they... Yeah, it'd be wonderful if we could. My instinct is telling me this is just going to be coming soon. And then at the expo, though, let's get them to commit to having a van there like they did not last year but the year before. And people loved going on it, having their picture taken. They've had it three times, and this last year they didn't do it. Right. So, yeah, so I think that that's... Anything else from the meeting with the town manager that we're missing? I think that was pretty much the gist of it. We just have to get a commitment.

This is really where we need to really be thinking about right now. The discussion of Old Home Day, our booth, Saturday, August 15th. The sign-up sheet's pretty impressive from our last meeting. I was just, yeah, so even if there's not a spot exactly we want to put, you know, I started to put my name double and then I realized that we did have an opening on four. Four just means four people at one time. And then if someone can't make it or something, I'll send this around again. Our schedule really for the first time looks like it's set and we should have more than enough coverage, which would be really good. I have a question about the Jim Green Award.

Yeah, perfect, sure. And I think I have that on here, too. Sorry, 8 to 9, so 8 o'clock, because you know how I always go, first thing in the morning at either 8 a.m., right?

Yeah, you've got it, yeah. And you can just put your name on anywhere. It'll fit kind of like I did. And then I stuck it over here, too. And then the sign-up sheet, I think, is golden if anyone needs to change it. Supplies, we kind of have that down to a science now. The water, the tent, the tables. Do we use one long rectangular table or two? I think we'll use two. One in the front, one in the back. One in the front and the back, which we can get from here. What are small cars? Oh, this was an actually, I think Valerie read my mind on it. I was just thinking, like, CART cars, if they had any little freebies that they could, I thought I could picture a little car that had CART on it with the number. I didn't know if they had anything. And then I thought maybe we could even find something like it on Amazon. If we did find, yeah, something that maybe little cars to promote CART, you know, that kids could take with them.

So this is referring to CART, the small cars?

That's what my thought was, yeah. Well, how about white? minivans. If we could find them, I love it. That's what I'm thinking. That's what they look like. I mean, we still have time, but they might be able to come with a cart on them if Tracy had something. I don't think we have time for that. But if anyone else wants to look into it, too, because it's something that we could find a water. I have $800 from our Expo fund. $800. See, that's wonderful. So, thinking about that, Valerie, why don't you share? I know it's a different event. Yeah, but that's okay, you know. Well, we can do cars for the Expo. We absolutely can. And take them, run them over to the next. Well, you're right. We could just, if we can order them, because something's coming very quickly.

Then we could have them for the Expo if we don't have them now, but Valerie kind of went along with what was on the agenda So Valerie why don't you share what I just remember that Jim always had little giveaways at the booth I still have my little bracelet that says never give up right so With that I ordered this on Amazon. It's like 218 sort of little gassy stuff, like you said, little trinkets. So, you know, seniors always need to write stuff down or they forget. So, right? Seniors, I'm a senior too now, right? So they're just like little notebooks. There's key rings. There's pens. There's bookmarks, magnetic. And they all have, like, icon glasses. I love those bookmarks. No beauty shines brighter than that of a good heart. start today with a grateful heart. So just style nice little, the best way to get something done is to begin. So I thought if I sort of put this in a basket, I mean it came with... They're like gift bags with the little shins, right? But we don't need the gift bags. We'll just keep them loose in the basket and just let them grab, right? All the kids will be right there. Right. And I'm thinking even the seniors or older, not, excuse me, even adults, the parents of the children might go, oh, that's a nice pen.

For kids, you'll definitely have to say...

I was thinking we should order another box.

Her question was should I order another box. I bought this because I got a gift card from a resident. It was like a tip. She gave me an Amazon gift card. So I could get another one if you think that that's not enough.

I think once we open it up, we're going to have a lot, but I couldn't hurt to have another one because the Louis is going to be here all day. Okay, very good.

Sheerston can, she printed out our whole floor plan for the expo last year. I know she has access to it. a pretty swift printer, but let's see if CART has something. Okay.

Very interestingly, Ilona had one of our seniors that, we won't say the name because we're, but a beautiful letter was written and given to Ilona about a senior that we talked about before that has gone above and beyond. And the letter was impeccable. Impeccable, yes. I do have copies of it here, too. Is there a written form? Is it who I'm thinking of? It is. And I could pass this around. I just don't feel, I don't want to say it. Don't say the name. Yeah. But if anyone wants to take a look at this, too. The person writing this is requesting that their name be submitted for a citizen of the year. I don't know how that works, per se, but my first thought in reading it was definitely the Jim Green Award as a nominee.

Is there a way to not do it on the link? Because I'd like to print them out and have them available, too. And that may give us ideas for future years.

The message board for the Blues thing is, the police station one says Seafield State Lives, and so do Helmets. I know it says that because I did it. But we can change it to Old Home. I had an Old Home Day schedule on there for, like, You did, yeah. Two weeks, and then I needed content, so I swapped it up to the seatbelts and helmets. The Blues Festival one, that's not the police department's. That's on the Sunnycrest property. Oh, okay. But I can.

I think that Kirsten also is publicly posting the final schedule on Thursday afternoon because there's one more. executive board type meeting on thursday or i thought i saw an email where she said she would be announcing the finalized schedule it's kind of bait it's kind of off it's brownie baby then if it's been posted great you know it's fundamentally the same as it has the last bit yeah i didn't see any fundamental changes except for the the location change and there's a magician the night before There's a magician, but that's run by the library. 8-12 to 8-15.

Those are the dates. Well, it says 8-12 to 8-15, but the actual agenda, the first event is on 8-11, the magician. So I don't know if she needs to change that.

So I think as far as old home days goes, we're gonna have to touch bases next week. I'll do my best to send something out, but if we can all take a roll in anything you can find out or bring to the table on it, just plan to do it. And when I finally opened this up, Ilona, you really did blow it out of the water with this. Because, I mean, this is what she's been sending out other than e-mails. Electronically. Yeah. And by real-time. Yeah. I just was so impressed when I took the time to read the e-mail. Finally. To read the letter. You did that like three months ago. Yeah. But, you know, I thought it was pretty impressive. And this is what people are receiving, hence why we have so many vendors signed up. So if you want to give us a two-minute elevator on that.

Our deadline was the 31st of July. I have 40 signed up. 40 give or take with promises of more and that's these are the sheets and i heard back from Oh, my God. Kelly, she actually got me one back. But if anybody wants to take these sheets and work with them again, I've crossed out the ones you don't work with because they've either responded or they're going to respond or they canceled. So these are, and I'm going to give, Sherry, I'm going to give you all the Town of Londonderry ones. Yeah, all of it is testing and all the different ones.

We're going to do something similar. I also have several finance people and realtor, like the ones that do the... I'm sorry, would they sell the stuff in the house? State sales. State sales, thank you. I have several of them who have reached out to me because they heard about it somewhere. They're not on my list. And I've already sent them applications. And I've told them we already have several financial and several real estate. It's up to you if you want to join them. Because I don't want to have like 10 of each. Right. But people have heard about it somehow and are reaching out, which is nice. That is really good. What was our total last year? It was either side of 70, because we had a couple no-shows, and then we had like four that showed up that I never had an application for because of our IT issue. And we just threw the tables out and let them set up. Right. Yeah. So it was nice.

We still have two months. Yeah, we have a lot of time. We do have time.

And we might even get some ideas from Old Home Day with everything that's there. And I extended... The time? The time frame, to anybody you write to, because it says July 31st. Maybe I'll change the main letter to say the end of August or something like that. End of August, I think. Fine.

I'll just edit it. We could even go into September a little bit, honestly. Because summer is such a hard time. It's just tricky. All right, so I think if there's nothing else with the Expo, I think let's just get through to old home day. That's our priority now. Get through that and do that well. And then liaison reports. Sure. So I think that here today, we in the police department and with the senior center have hosted, I think, four, maybe five elder scam seminars or... those types of events through either AARP or the Attorney General's office. And so the EG's office would like to come back again. We did one of the Baldwin's. AARP was at the senior center.

I filled out an application today and it got kicked back to me. I sent it back to you. Whoever else was in that email. First it said we've gotten and accepted your application. Then I got this whole error thing, IT error. cannot do your application. So it was a real simple application and it just got kicked right back.

I'll reach back out to them. So someone from AARP reached out to me about National Night Out, which is tonight. The reason why we in London don't participate on a national night out, which is a national police around the country, they discuss all the home days in 10 days. I say we do four nights of fun, you know? It's like Hanukkah, right? So that's what, but I said we do have a senior resource expo, but additionally we would like to host events at the senior center, so they were very much interested in that.

I gave them four dates.

Cut to the chase. I'd like to bring the AG's office back at the senior center because that was at Linda Clap. You heard that name? She gave an amazing presentation. You know the two Ps? Yes. Yeah. She gave an amazing presentation out of the Waldron. Her full-time job is to go around the state doing these presentations. It was easy to understand. Victim witness advocacy. So I know the Senior Center is a membership based organization. However, I was thinking if we advertised to the public as well.

I invite anybody over 55. If the members and I do that all the time. Great.

So as a liaison report, just generally speaking, nothing to do with Old Home Day or the expo itself. We're trying to bring in a couple more seminars on the scams that we're seeing. And a couple of our detectives always attend as well to talk about specific cases from our community that we see, whether it's cryptocurrency scams or the online scams, the clickbait, the emails that you get, things along those lines. So it's all about education and telling people, please, anyone watching this meeting right now, don't click. If you're unsure, always call the police department or call a loved one because if you go down that rabbit hole, sometimes it's too late. And someone very close to me He just lost $4,000 in a scam. It was all about gift cards. And that's a warning flag to us. We have to keep a little closer eye on him because it was very shocking to me and my family that he would have succumbed to this as bright as he is. But he's getting older. He's in his early 80s. So anyway, it's all about education. It's about repeating the message and making sure people don't be afraid to call and ask someone. And there's all new ones all the time.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but I, about two years ago, got a call from what sounded like my son. I've been arrested. You need to call this phone number. And I called the phone number, and they wanted me to send money and this and that. And I flew home from work. I was so upset. My son was sleeping in his room. He was not. So I went straight to the police department, and I said, this happened. And they're like, yes, it's a known AI thing. They can pretend the voice and all of that. So it's very scary. Call the loved one if you get that call. Don't call the attorney.

Don't have your voice on your voicemail message. Because they just take 10 seconds of your voice to create any conversation. So use the default voicemail message.

So we're going to continue to schedule those in the fall, and a few more, and just, again, just advertise as best we can. We try to do four to six annually all around town to different organizations that want to host us. That would be great. Otherwise, the CART stuff, I'll work on that. If you have any questions, I really don't have any other updates other than the projects we're covering right now.

I don't know whether anybody has gotten this. I guess it's a scam. This has happened to me twice within the last month. A woman calls up and she said, are you the person who pays the Eversource bill? And, of course, I hang up because what are they going to say? Every source will call you. Every source will never call you. Right. But that has happened to me twice the last month.

I was just really impressed by the AG's presentation. It was one hour, a lot of questions after the fact. I don't want to over-promise and under-deliver, but I was very, very impressed by their presentation. by the presentation. So we want to invite them back as many times as they're willing to come.

And they would open, I don't want to speak for the Baldwins, but they have a really cool conference room, and they provided coffee and groceries and stuff. No, but I'm there, and three other police officers are there, so I'm not worried about a security threat, but that is a locked, you know, secure facility.
