Hello Kearney, I'm Colleen Doctrine and here's your Flash Update for the week of June 8th. Do you ever wonder where Kearney water comes from? Kearney relies on local groundwater sources that provide hundreds of thousands of gallons of drinking water each day to homes and businesses throughout our community. Recently, our Public Works team responded to a maintenance issue involving one of our City's groundwater wells. During routine operations, water levels in the well dropped to a point that could have damaged critical pumping equipment if not addressed promptly. To protect the reliability of our water system, the City invested $35,000 in testing, rehabilitation and repairs. This proactive work helps ensure continued service and reduces the risk of more costly failures in the future. Could we simply purchase all of our water from Kansas City? While Kearney does supplement its supply with purchased water, relying entirely on an outside source would be more expensive and could increase vulnerability to disruptions beyond our control. Maintaining local water production remains an important part of Kearney's long-term strategy. Because our existing treatment plant is currently operating near capacity, future improvements are expected to focus on treatment plant expansion and system reliability. Providing safe, reliable drinking water is one of the City's highest priorities. The entryway to Jesse James Park has been restored just in time for the Cleetson Beach Watch Party, Fireworks Spectacular, and our Summer Concert Series. Crews completed the culvert repairs at Jesse James Park and are now working on the culvert at Mack Porter Park. These projects are necessary for ensuring proper drainage and keeping our park grounds in tip-top shape. The Culvert at Mac Porter Park should be completed later this month. Market at the Park at Lions Park is this Thursday. Join us from 4 to 7 p.m. to shop from local farmers, cottage bakers, and artisans. And be sure to grab some dinner. The annual Kearney Fireworks Spectacular is back at Kearney Amphitheater on July 3rd. Be sure to come out and enjoy this year's concert featuring Shiprocked, playing your favorite yacht rock hits.
