Community Center Update

Over the past eighteen months, the Parks and Recreation Department has worked with Next Practice Partners to evaluate the feasibility of a potential Community Center for the Town of Indian Trail. This effort began following Council direction and builds upon the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which identified indoor recreation space as a significant need for the community. Throughout this process, staff has prioritized community engagement to ensure that any potential facility reflects the priorities of our residents. Outreach included a statistically valid resident survey, an intercept survey open to the broader community, stakeholder meetings, a community open house, and engagement through Town events, schools, homeowner associations, and community organizations. The strong response and participation demonstrate the level of interest residents have in helping shape the future of recreation in Indian Trail. Community feedback has consistently identified a desire for expanded indoor recreation opportunities, including fitness and wellness space, indoor walking areas, flexible program rooms, gymnasium space, indoor play areas, and interest in amenities such as performing arts or aquatics. These priorities align closely with the Parks and Recreation Department's mission to enrich our community through memorable experiences and our vision to be a trendsetting agency that transforms lives. As participation in programs and events continues to grow, many offerings are reaching capacity due to the limitations of existing facilities. A community center would provide the space needed to expand programs, serve residents of all ages, and strengthen opportunities for community connection. Based on the input received and the planning completed to date, three conceptual options have been developed to help guide the conversation about what a future community center could look like in Indian Trail. Each concept includes the core elements most frequently requested by residents, while offering different amenity combinations to reflect varying community interests. During the March 10 presentation, staff will briefly recap the planning process, highlight the significant community input that shaped these concepts, and provide an overview of the three potential facility options. Staff will also seek Council feedback regarding which concepts may warrant further exploration. Based on Council's guidance, staff anticipates returning within the next several months with refined information and recommendations to help inform the next phase of discussion. This step will allow Council to continue shaping the project and determine whether the community should ultimately have the opportunity to consider the investment and decide its future direction.
