Hello friends and welcome into East China Stadium. I am your commentator for tonight's match Packin in for CTV community TV and our coverage of East China School District sports. Tonight we've got your East China United lacrosse program welcoming in the Norsemen of Gross Point North for a beautiful day of lacrosse. Weather is holding up nicely. Definitely trying to break through the coldness of winter or I guess early spring because we're definitely out of winter but the weather doesn't want to get us that close. We got equipment check coming up here and both teams kind of coming into East China today looking to get into the win column. The Normen are coming in here winning their their previous game but dropping two of their last three.

They had a win against Ann Arbor Green Hills last week where they won 11 to four, but prior they lost to Lance Cruz 5 to6 and Royal Oak Shrine 5-8. So just some lowscoring games. They're looking to kind of come in here and flip the script and find the back of the net. East China on the other hand, it's been the story all season long, just unable to kind of finish out games, play a full four full quarters. Their record currently sits at 1 and8, one and four in the MAC Whites opposed to Gross Point North's two and three in the MAC white. So, two teams fighting it out in conference play. We'll see who has the edge early in this game coming up right after this faceoff here,

spinning all around. No one can seem to get to it now. East China gets it initially. Good pressure from Gross point north off the rip now moving up across half field. Cole Champine down to the short corner

moving in towards the crease spinning comes out. M Charzik back into the middle now. Bounces out to reset. Hillicker shoots and it's wide. He'll stay with the Norseman here on the back line.

Here comes Gross Point North entering into the hash marks. Peter Welch with the ball. Goes down to the short corner. drops the pass initially, now running in towards the crease. Two defenders on giving him trouble. Bounces out behind the net. Welch once again down in the goal line. Extended area spinning back, moving up the sideline, looking for space inside the hash marks.

East China playing pretty tough defense early on, not letting them get in between the hash marks. Getting pressured out. Welch just holding on to the ball way too long. Now East China gets the steal and comes away with it. Looking to counter. It's Kaden Hudson now. Moving up. Goal line extended moving behind the net. Switching. It's Stfansky. Back up top now. Has some room. Shoots, bounces. Good save for number 27, Nathaniel Gray.

He heaves this one up. East China can't scoop it. Had an open look. Gross point. Couldn't scoop up the ball neither. moving on that far side corner now on the right side. Shoots, bounces left of the net out through the back line. Morseman will keep the possession

behind the net. Gross Point just waiting, looking for an open opportunity. This one goes all the way through now. Scooped up by Stfansky. Moving to the far sideline inside the box now. Dishes it back out to Ryan W. Ryan Wyn one of the very few players that can consistently put up a few goals for this China team. So, you know that the scoring has to kind of come through him to get these guys going. This pass goes out through the back line. Change of possession.

Last time we saw East China was here for home game against Stanker Bay. Ended up dropping that game 19-2. Just never could really get things going. And of course, the big story line was them missing um a handful of starters. And again, it's looking like it's the same deal. I've seen a group of ununiformed players down low.

Here comes East China now on the counter. But following that game against Anchor Bay, they dropped one against Lance Cruz North five to8 as well as a game to Bishop Foley. Three to five. So defensively putting up I guess not allowing a lot of goals and keeping the offense in it. It's just generating some goals up top and we noticed it in the Anchor Bay game. Just the reluctancy to kind of just fire away and take some shots. It's it's what's hurting this team right now. You just got to instill some confidence in yourself and maybe even self-manufacture it by just taking more shots that you're not ne necessarily comfortable taking.

Ryan win outside the box now moving in between the hash marks. Shoots, bounces, short stick, still free outside the crease. He's trying to fighting almost coming away with it with Cash Chapman. Now Gross Point North has it spinning back. This is number nine Eli Stanovic. He sends it up to the far sideline. Fighting for it on the sideline. Ryan Win and Cass Chapman fighting for East China here. Behind the back pass.

Ryan Win with it now. Three defenders in front. One coming from behind. Back to Chapman. enters the hash marks, wants to shoot, gets stripped from behind by John Quater on the attack now on the counter. Just couldn't get the pass in. Had the open lane. Chapman with the ball up to Win. Brian win just waiting for a sub to come in. Number 13, Brady Dross.

And we'll get a timeout here for Coach Hiller.

Six minutes to go here in the first quarter. Score still scoreless. Coach Hiller wants to set his boys up here. Give him the best opportunity to get a shot on net, get a goal, take the lead here. It's hard to kind of pinpoint exactly where you can flip the switch for East China. I think it's just getting these guys more accustomed to the game, getting them more touches, getting them more experience, and you see the the goal total for the opposing team. It's not anything outlandish. I mean, that the game against Anchor Bay is an outlier compared to everything else. For the most part, they're keeping games kind of under nine goals, and that's manageable, especially for a team that necessarily isn't topheavy with seniors um or loaded with experienced lacrosse players. We mentioned a lot in the in our previous broadcast that uh there's currently just a lack of a a youth program for this East China team. And that's definitely something Coach Hiller's eyeing to get back going. But you got to get your varsity squad in order first. And they're coming along. They just got to they just got to find the back of the net. Let's see what Coach Hiller drew up here. Moving down in the middle. Shoots, scores. There it is.

Timeout. Well worth it. And that's what they need to do. Take their time, work it around the horn, have someone dive in through the middle, find the soft spot in between the gaps, pass, waste no time, shoot, and score. And that was Adam Hussein. number. I believe that was also an assist by Ryan Wyn who's just hanging out up top just calm collected and was saying a few goals for this East China team and most of them coming from kind of on the run splitting the defense off ball movement which you need that kind of guy. Most of the teams that East China's had trouble with, they it's because of that type of player. And it also doesn't help that they're usually above 6'2. They just kind of stand over whoever, just lob it in over top of Charzik's head most of the time.

But East China scores first. They're going to look to keep the momentum going and hopefully the defense can hold up their end of the bargain here this game. still fighting in midfield. Both teams just unable to possess. And now the Norsemen have it. Dane Wilson now moving up that far sideline. Now far corner spins back. Moving up the hash marks and in now. Can't bring it in. being aggressive up top. Really extended out and it worked out, but not now. Oh, open one-on-one opportunity. Just missed. Faro got pulled way up top. Initially, it seemed like a great play. Just couldn't get the steal and that left that gap down low. Got to have defensive players sliding over.

Spinning inside the hash marks. Shoots wide left. Stays with Gross Point North. John SM with it. Spinning back. Short corner shoots wide left. Still with the Norman.

Short corner once again. It is March again. Now wide now down far corner. Spinning back. Shoots wide left. Once again, you'll take this for East China. Just you're not doing too much. You're not exulting too much energy right now. You're just forcing Gross Point North to make the mistake. Eventually, they're going to make a bad pass or you're going to be able to strip it from him. SMC looking for space. Shoots low. Saved by Melcharzic. We'll get a whistle here.

Change of possession. in East China coming up the far sideline trying to get Adam Hussein on the run and tied the crease now shoots. Cash Chapman came out of nowhere. Stfansky now goal line extended short side the box moving into the hash mark shoots wide left and it will be Gross Point North. in the middle. 30 seconds to go here in the first quarter.

Moving up that far sidelines. Cash Chapman wants to shoot. Bumped out behind the net. Looking for someone in the middle. No looks up top to Ryan Win. Now goes across to Justin Williamson. Welcome back in to quarter two. East China gets first strike here against Gross Point North off of the Adams goal. Came off of a timeout from coach Hiller and it came out to be the the right call just to get the guys set up and honestly it looked like one of their their better possessions the last few games we've been here. just they looked calm and collected, made their passes look easy, and uh Adam Hussein just slipped through the middle,

got it to him quickly. He wasted no time. Turned over the the left shoulder, over the right shoulder, actually a shot and put it in. Face off here. Norman with it. Derek Falmer moving up the hash marks inside the box now. Loses it. Now East China comes away. Moving up the field. It's Hudson. Dishes it off. Bounces through to Stoultz. Sorry, Dross. Dross in between looking opposite side. Stfansky back to Dross behind the net now. Cash jam goes up to Dross. Dross to to Stfansky and Nathaniel Gray will pick it up. moving through. Cashman shoots and scores. Bottom left corner. It's what you want to see. Plays mostly behind the net and he almost had that goal to end out the first quarter. Just kind of came out of nowhere. And this time kind of again just breaks up the pass, runs it up the gut,

does it himself, finds the bottom left net,

gives East China a two- lead. Norman get the face off once again. Gives it out. Having troubles keeping the possession with them. Still with it. He's China just pestering them. Not making it easy. Flag thrown. Most likely a slashing call there. in between the hash marks now. Gross point looking to answer back. Goes down to the short corner. Back up. Loses possession. Coming through the midline getting pressed. Pushing the back and Official says he crossed the plane and wasn't a push in the bag. Interesting call nonetheless. Shoots, deflected. Melcharzik scoops it. Doesn't allow them to get the the counter goal there. Now behind the net,

shoots, scores. There's the answer. Number six, Michael Golo gets the goal. and cuts this thing to a onegoal lead.

Another faceoff here. Carson Huttus will be in for East China. spinning pops it free. Hip back towards Gross Point side. Ryan win with it now in control. Whistle called in the middle of the field. whistle called kicking.

Coach Hiller and his staff just mythed that call and we already got a flag out. Gross point North possessing behind the net. Moving back up to the far side corner up the hash marks in between. Low shot saved Meltch Chararzik. And we'll see what this flag's for. Ty Fardo called

And we have two guys penalized. Vardo and number 19 Logan Morton. So pretty big power play here for Gross Point North. East China just has to hold their own right now. They might score and tie this thing up, but you can't let that change the momentum. And here's a good call going for East China as they will get possession back now. Hudson with it.

Brian Win inside the box now. up top down to the far side. Back up Justin Williamson. Williamson the win win win on the near sideline. shoots wide right just ripped one out quickly. East China will keep the possession as they got all guys returned back now up top over to win. Can't bring it in. Tough pass from Pilaski. Still alive now. Ryan Win moving inside the hash marks. Bounces back out

down to the short corner. Chapman back up to win. went across to Pilaski. Pilaski down to the far corner behind the net to Chapman. Back up looks, shoots, popped up in the air. Back to Chapman and Gray will get the save here. Was looking pretty good for a second there. Good passing. Almost had the opportunity. Just the shot came off stick a little bit weird and this was an easy floater. Chapman now across to win. Didn't have the open lane. Bounced out up between the hash marks now to Stfansky. Six minutes to go here until halftime. Shoots wide left. Stays with East China. shoots and scores.

Missed that one. But East China takes the lead or sorry keeps the lead going as they go up by two now.

And there he is, Ryan Win. Like I mentioned before, a big goal scorer for this East China team. They need him involved. They're going to be scoring consistently. And he puts in goal number three for East China.

We'll go with Gross Point North now. up top between the hash marks. Can't bring it in. Now with possession, it's number 18 Peter Welch moving in between the hash mark. Shoots, knocked down. Melcharzic gets the save. heaved up through half field. Popped up. Ryan Wyn trying to get it. No luck on the ground. Big scrum for the ball. Chapman comes away with it. Just loses it. Broken up again. He's trying to not make it easy on him. Now we get a whistle. Bush in the back. Norman with possession now. Five minutes to go until half.

Moving up that far side. Hash marks. Fight for the ball. Popped up. Melcharzic finds it. Coming out of the crease now. Heaved up. Good snag there. Finds Chapman. Just couldn't bring it in. Had him wide open around the crease. Just couldn't bring it in. Good pass from Justin Williamson. Good reception from Justin Williamson off the half field heave from Elcharic. Shoots. Knocked down. Now moving up. Carson Huis tried to dish it out. waited a little too long. Stfansky trying to possess. No luck. Out through the side through the middle. Now it's the Norsemen up the hash marks into the middle. try to shoot. Knocked down. Gross point North still with the possession. Good breakup. Vardo having a pretty strong defensive game so far. Here's Ryan Win. Whistle called. Coach Hiller calls a timeout there.

He's trying on a little bit of a counter there and Hiller shut it down and worked for him last time. Set the guys up, extend this thing to a three-goal lead. start building up that lead slowly, steadily, make it just a harder, harder thing for Gross Point North to chip away at. Coach Hiller and his offense breaks. Coach Patterson and his defense do the same. seeing coach Hiller a lot more involved with the structure of this offense now and eventually you want to relieve that and let the players use their abilities and set themselves up. But I mean, we talked about it just the lack of scoring on this team has led for a need for that of structuring them more and getting them set up in these set pieces and kind of guiding them into these shooting opportunities rather than them finding them themselves.

Wait for this guy to get his gloves on. Ryan Win taking it up to the middle across to Stfansky. Back up. Williamson across to Win. Back to Williamson. They're looking for someone in the middle. They don't see him yet. Stfansky behind the net to Chapman. Chapman spinning back going towards the short corner side. Up to Win into the middle now. Big hit broken up. Justin Williamson penalized here. Just under three minutes to go in this first half. Williamson called for tripping. And now we'll go a timeout for Gross Point North to talk some things over. Lowscoring affair here in East China.

Defense doing their jobs on both ends. for both teams. Seeing a lot of 50/50 balls just kind of out on the ground and both teams being pretty aggressive for East China, we're seeing a big difference here from their game against Anchor Bay. Talked about at times just a lack of effort in those 50/50 balls and they're being a lot more aggressive this game and it's resulting in them getting some great opportunities and being in the lead currently. Gross Point North on the other hand, they're just looking to find some more opportunities. They had a few in the first quarter. Just missed the net. You got to have some shots on target. Coach, coach Mark Zeppela, sorry, lost there for a second. Coach Sepila is just trying to get his guys together and they're not playing bad right now. They just they got to execute and that's that's the same thing for East China. They got opportunities that they got to execute on. They're just executing on a few more plays than Gross Point currently.

I don't think he's stressing out. I don't think Coach Hiller's stressing out. We got a lot of game left. Peter Welch will take this one up through the middle. Trying to force him out through the back line. And now Gray comes away with it outside the crease. Heaves it up. bounces it and out through the sideline. A minute 10 to go now. Melcharzik heaves this one. Williamson back in the game with the ball up to win. Win between the hatch mark shoots. Deflected off of Gray. Now the Norman with it. Win gets the stop. East China leading 3-1 currently and Gross Point North takes off here from the faceoff looking to get back in their scoring ways. East China's defense playing pretty strong in this first half thanks to the likes of Taipardo. I called his name a few times in the first half. Just ultraaggressive, pressing, not making it easy. And uh it's kind of a trickle down effect to the rest of the defenders there for East China. They're holding down the middle, not making it easy for Gross Point to find any any runners or just breaking in splitting defenders. They're forcing outside shots.

Little bit of miscommunication, we'll call it for Gross Point North on where to pick up the ball at. Gross Point still with it. Number three, Max Dailyaly. Good steal there. Caleb Buckland sends it up. We got some room to run. Chapman scoops it far side corner looking for anyone. He shoots himself wide right and Gray will be closest to keeping possession with the Norman. had the goal from Emma Hussein, Ryan Wyn, and Cash Chapman for East China Point North. Michael Golawo is the only goal scorer. Had opportunities. They've gone toe-to-toe with Mel Chararsik a few times. They're just missing the net. I'm sure that's something coach Mark Zeppela has preached to his team in the locker room during halftime is just got to execute. Opportunities are there. I would say they have the same amount of opportunity as East China in most of these attacks and drives. Just East China is capitalizing on a few more. And here's a good attempt. Shot out wide. Stays with East China. Here comes D. Sends it in. Tried to catch a runner. No luck. Still free outside the crease. First point spinning back. This is 22. Samuel Wakefield.

Wakefield cutting it up. Hussein on him. No luck. Big hit from Stfansky. Gets the turnover, too. Big momentum shifter for East China. They're going to try to feed off of it. Haven't gotten to call his number a whole lot this season for goals. Would like to. He plays aggressive. He's definitely that energizer for this East China team. Whistle called now. Flag out. Moving to the far side corner outside the crease. Juan to shoot. Broken up. Another good stop from East China. Fardo was in the mix once again along with Caleb Buckland. Now down in the short corner goal line extended area moving up top. Peter Welch with the ball in between the hash marks bounced out far corner now moving up back towards the middle inside the hash mark. shoots low, deflected back out. Melcharzic scoops it launches across midfield now. Can't bring it in initially. Selenica picks it up. Michael Shore fighting for it. Gross point possession here. Sure. We'll take it out. Moving on the hash marks inside the box. Now back out. Good defense here from Buckland. Not letting him in. Not giving him an inch of space. Forces the bad pass across midfield. Win with it. Spinning back. Finds room. Two defenders on up the far sideline. Swimming back inside the hash marks. Finds Chapman. Shoots off the shins of Noah Gray. Nathaniel Gray, sorry. Great save from

Nathaniel Gray. Chapman in a one-on-one opportunity. Whistle called. A little bit of slashing there.

Cole Champine moving inside the hash marks now. Fake the pass. Finds room. Splitting defenders. Farardo breaks it up, but no. Still shoots. Still scores. Cole Champine brings it to within one now. Just a bit of a defensive breakdown there for East China. They bit on the fake pass.

Champine just had a lot of room up the guard. That was the first time you saw so much space in the middle of the field. East China's been locking it down for most of this game and you hope that they're able to kind of break bad habits of playing strong three quarters, losing out in one. And I really hope the momentum doesn't swing here. It's been pretty stagnant coming out of the half. East China's still been holding their own. They got to get back in the driver's seat here. Dross can't bring it in. Stfansky's got it. Moving in between the hash marks now. Spins middle.

Shoots outside the hash marks and scores. Ryan win answers. Goal number two for number eight. off the assist from Eric Stfansky. I said they need to get back in the driver's seat and they just put it into third gear and they're cruising.

Momentum is kind of shifting here in the season for them. They're they're getting steadily better. This game was a big swing in the uh aggression and energy category as they were winning a lot of 50/50 balls and laying some big hits. Now they just got to build off that, get some more shot opportunities up, find the back of the net more, get closer to that 10 goal a game kind of scoring mentality.
