1. Redwood Convenience Site Closed for Renovation - The Redwood Convenience Site at 100 Electra Road closed on April 1 for a year-long renovation project. During the closure, residents in unincorporated Durham County are encouraged to visit one of the County's two other convenience sites: Parkwood Convenience Site (5928 Highway 55) and Northern Convenience Site (11894 N. Burn Ban Continues in Durham - A countywide burn ban went into effect in Durham County on March 23, 2026. Due to ongoing dry conditions and increased fire danger, the ban issued by the Durham County Office of Emergency Services, Fire Marshal Division, remains in effect until further notice. The N.C. Forest Service has also issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective March 28. Durham County has the authority to issue the ban within 100 feet of a structure while the NC Forest Service can issue a ban from 100 feet outward. The two bans combined prohibit open and recreational burning anywhere in the county. 3. Durham's Neighborhood Approach to Home Energy Savings - Durham County's Energy Burden & Emissions Reduction Program (EBERP) helps income-qualified households lower energy costs through free home energy upgrades and repairs. This is your chance to grow your impact! Durham County is now accepting applications for the 2026 Food Security Grant, offering funding opportunities for community food security projects. Nonprofit organizations can apply for $20,000-$50,000 to support projects that improve food access and strengthen community food security. County Veteran Services to Operate with Limited Services April 22-24 - Residents seeking assistance from Durham County Veterans Services from Wednesday, April 22, through Friday, April 24, 2026, should note that limited services will be available as staff attend an annual accreditation training. The department will resume normal operations on Monday, April 27. During this period, appointments with a veteran services officer will not be available. However, customers can still reach Veteran Services by calling 919-560-8387, emailing veteranservices@dconc.gov <mailto:veteranservices@dconc.gov>, or visiting their office at 201 N. Roxboro Street, Durham, NC 27701. 6. Summer Opportunities for Young People - The City of Durham, Durham County, and Durham Public Schools are offering an extensive list of summer programs and internships ranging from Durham Fire and Police Department Camps, Kids Voting Durham Internships and DPS Summer Learning Opportunities. Recognizing the Durham Library Foundation in Acknowledgement of Their One-Time Gift of $117,318 in Support of Durham County Library Programs
The Board is requested to recognize and celebrate the Durham Library Foundation’s one-time gift of $117,318.17 in support of Durham County Library programs to be expended by June 30, 2027. These funds are in addition to the Durham Library Foundation’s existing annual contribution of grant funds for library programs which this year totaled $248,317. Founded as a 501(c)(3) after 2000, the Durham Library Foundation’s mission is to develop and encourage the long-term financial health and growth of Durham County Library through giving, endowment, and capital contributions. This one-time financial gift and annual giving exemplify the Durham Library Foundation’s commitment to that mission. Alignment with Strategic Plan: This recognition supports strategic plan objective RL 3, Help County department celebrate achievements and success stories, particularly RL 3b, which encourages County employees to market Durham County as an equitable, thriving, and inclusive community for all residents and businesses. It also aligns with strategic plan objective HI3, Expand and provide services that support residents across their entire lifespan. This recognition also meets many of Durham County's Empowered Community objectives. Resolution: Honoring Southern School of Energy and Sustainability's Boys Basketball Championship
The Board is requested to approve a resolution honoring the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability’s Boys Basketball Championship. The team defeated Mooresville High School on March 14, 2026, and finished the season with an outstanding 28-3 record. Commissioners have invited Coach Greg Motley, his coaching staff and team members, to attend the meeting and receive accolades on behalf of a proud community. Alignment with Strategic Plan: This item aligns with all of Durham County’s Strategic Goals. Resource Persons: Dr. Mike Lee, Chair, Durham County Board of Commissioners County Manager's Recommendation: The County Manager recommends that the Board approve the resolution and present to the Southern coach, staff and team along with sincere congratulations from the Durham community. Proclamation- The Week of the Young Child
The Board is requested to proclaim the week of April 11-17, 2026, as The Week of the Young Child. The Week of the Young Child® is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This celebration is a time to recognize that children's opportunities are our responsibilities, and to recommit ourselves to ensuring that each and every child in Durham experiences the type of early environment-at home, at childcare, at school, and in the community-that will promote their early learning. Durham’s Partnership for Children, Early Years, and Durham Technical Community College and other local organizations, in conjunction with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, are leading the celebration of the Week of the Young Child. Durham County has continued to invest in improving systems for young children and their parents and caregivers through investments in implementation of the Early Childhood Action Plan (ECAP), in County programs, such as Cooperative Extension’s Welcome Baby Program, and in public preschool for all Durham families through Durham PreK. Alignment with Strategic Plan: A robust ecosystem of early childhood programs aligns with the DCo Forward strategic focus areas of Empowered Community and Healthy and Inclusive Community.
