Alright, good afternoon everybody. This is our regular scheduled monthly Health Welfare Recreation Committee meeting. It's May 26. It's May 26, 2026, 6 PM and I'd like to call this meeting to order. Roll being taken here. Everyone's present but one Mr Duncan didn't make it today. And if you would like to have a motion to approve. This agenda please.
I'll make that motion. I second.
A motion by Mr. Miller, seconded by Ms. Smith. All in favor of approval of the agenda, say aye.
Aye.
Ayes have it. All right, moving down the list, any public comments? Anybody out there with anything to bring up or say? If not, we'll move right on to... uh our minutes which we have here fine job of ms smith getting those in the ceiling so look over your minutes and i'd entertain a motion to approve the minutes and make a motion to approve the minutes motion to approve the minutes Mr. Morris. And second, Mr. Miller. All in favor of approval of the minutes, say aye.
Aye.
All right, moving down to old business. First of all, let's get on Mr. Morris with the rural water report. Anything on that?
No, sir. We're still where we're at with J.E. Sarton and any of the other rural water.
Gotcha. Nothing there. We're moving on down to 6B, which will be animal control. Craig, you got something for us? Come up to the microphone, turn it on, and...
we're not sure exactly where we're going but that's kind of the the gist of what we're going for and not really set on colors yet either so
It looks good.
Yeah, really good. I disliked the old one. It was just too jumbled up. Like if the truck pulled up, you had to really walk up on the truck and look to be able to see what it was.
I like the one with red. I like them all.
That really jumps out.
I haven't saw one. Did you do that one?
She's the one that's, yeah. Well, I like it.
Is that your favorite one too? Yes.
I like it too, but I like it. It's the same as the one with the red in it. I just like to think that red makes it look really good, especially on the stars in there and the poles.
I said I saw one today. It said Tullahoma, and that's all it said, Tullahoma.
All in the trunk? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I do want to do something similar when we get our new truck that we're still waiting on.
I was surprised theirs was green.
Yeah, yeah.
So it didn't show up near as much as a white vehicle with something on it.
Craig, I've got a question for you. When is the opening of the animal shelter?
We're moving in right now. We're probably 75% there.
When's it going to be like opening day out there?
We just haven't decided the actual ribbon cut. We still got to get a lot of stuff in there and get everything ironed out, really. Ben Loman just came today. They got to come back. Still waiting on two more phones to go in there. There's still a couple cabinets we have on order that we'll have to have to get everything kind of tucked away inside. But potentially looking at maybe next week trying to – Get with the mayor and Terry and see about doing the ribbon cutting.
We need to have this approved by the ribbon cutting time. That'd be important to have that out there, right?
I think so.
If y'all are good with the general direction we're going, I mean, we can keep playing with it and kind of come up with some colors. What do you think, Tim? What do you like on there?
Are the trucks white?
They are. What would you like on there, too?
Well, like everyone else, the red pops without it.
It's supposed to be orange is what it's supposed to be.
Okay. Whatever color. Well, orange or red.
They're both pretty.
Looks a little like rust.
There you go. That's good.
Yeah, that looks good. It's supposed to be Tennessee orange. It's a little bit dark for Tennessee orange.
Yeah, it's got a more red, doesn't it?
Yeah.
You're talking about UT, Tennessee.
It's more eye-pleasing as a darker orange.
We can dial it in more. This is just us kind of just throwing different colors and seeing what kind of jumps out at us.
So I think we're all kind of like that one. So it kind of gives you kind of something to figure with.
Do you like the dog looking to the side or the one looking straight at you?
I like straight at you. Well, here's the thing with the straight at you. That's our favorite also. But if you go to embroider something, the white around the nose, it's going to miss every bit of that stuff and it's going to look like a blob.
Kind of like a kangaroo maybe?
That's our favorite too. But she even talked to somebody that does embroidering and said it's going to be – It's going to cause problems if you go to embroider anything.
So yeah, the side view would probably be better.
Which is unfortunate, like I said, that other is our favorite.
But you still get those pointed ears up like that, I guess, though. Yeah.
So you could do the side view in that reddish color?
Yeah, they could be changed to whatever.
But you do need the side view to do an embroidered emblem. It would look better. It would come out a lot better. I understand.
So is everybody good to put him on this and maybe next month make a decision?
Yeah.
Is that good with you, Roseanne? Mm-hmm. Do I?
I'm good.
Okay. Let's do that. We're in the ballpark, so kind of come up with something next month or – Do we need to do it before next month? I mean, I don't know.
Why don't we do it now?
Yeah, let's do it now.
What about you? Are you ready to do it? I don't want to pile you up.
Well, I think we need to be working on the sign because even if we decide, we still got to have the thing made, which may take another month or so. You never can tell.
All right, somebody want to make a motion for him to proceed?
So make a motion to proceed with animal, the dog looking to the side, and maybe in the orange or the reddish color.
Do you all like that color, or do you want to go more towards the Tennessee orange with that color?
I don't care. The orange is fine with me. Some people would go, yeah, I'm not Tennessee.
How about like a reddish orange, okay?
This red's pretty good, and that way you're not picking it.
You're not alienating Alabama fans.
That's what I was saying. Or Tennessee fans.
It doesn't matter whatever you pick. Somebody's going to complain.
Yes, yes. Kind of stay with that Tennessee flag. Yeah, I like the triple stars. Yeah, we like the stars in there.
Does that give you all something to go on? Did you make a motion? I sure did.
I'll second. Proceed forward with this and second by Mr. Miller. All in favor of them proceeding with this? Aye. Aye. Let's have it. All right, Craig, you got it. Thank you. I like it. Hey, do you got anything else for us? Do you got any? No. Okay.
Like I said, we're in the process of moving and we're – We're about there. I think we've only got about 12 dogs to move over. We moved a lot during all the rain because the outside dogs were beginning to be a mess. We've been kind of working two shelters at once. But tomorrow we should have everything over, and then we've got the cleanup we've got to do over there. I would like to leave it like we found it.
What's the plan for that now?
What's that?
The old one.
I guess Manchester will just move into the rest of it.
Hmm.
Hey, can I keep this? Yeah, that's it.
Are we swapping anything for it or anything else?
No, it was theirs. It was.
Oh, that was there. But that land back in the corner that's landlocked.
I thought that was part of the land.
That was supposed to have been some kind of deal, but my understanding that four point whatever acres is still deeded to the county.
So it's kind of unresolved.
The truck you were talking about, that was in last year's budget, correct? Yes.
Okay, so it's ordered. It's ordered. Supposedly it was hitting the line early April.
Okay.
But I don't know any updates on this.
Okay. All right. Appreciate you, Craig. Thank you for the update. Appreciate all you do. All right, moving on down the list. 6C, we'll have rural fire report and discussion. You guys from Summit, we got anything for us? Mike's yours.
How y'all doing this evening? This is Summitville, right?
Yes, ma'am. Michael, the assistant chief of Summitville. So far this year, Summitville has, we've responded 37 of our own calls, 16 requests for mutual aid. throughout the county.
Can you say that again?
We have responded to 37 calls in our district and we have responded to 16 mutual aid calls.
In addition to the 37?
In addition to the 37. So we're here the end of May and we're already at 54 runs total for the department. I've got As of now, I'm at 22 active members. We have all our trucks are in place. Everything's moving ahead.
Okay. And we're going to discuss the fire alarm money Thursday night.
Thursday what time?
At 4 o'clock. We start at 4. Okay.
I'll let Chief know. I'll be at work. Okay.
How is smoke detector installments? Have y'all got all 12 of them yet? We're at 24, I believe. Something I'm going to bring up in a little bit under new business, I guess, would be the proper way to do it. I always collect those in the month of June. I want to have them in by the first because I want to tell the budget finance chairman that everybody's reached their quota, and I always get their paperwork turned in just for – you know just to do it right so um i'll be getting with y'all i'm going to tell you now that okay yeah i'll have it to you in the month of june you just turn them into me we can have it all in there um and we just got another shipment of alarms here about a month ago so we're and going in going into this committee going into this next cycle whoever the chair becomes here
Y'all need to remember this.
Just try to always remember who the chair is and try to keep up with those. I have the last six years of them on file, so whoever does it, try to keep up with them.
And not only do we MDU, but we also have to submit them to the state to get more. Okay. Because then we've got to account for where every one of them goes.
Then we have six years of records of... of all the detectors that they've installed. So that way somebody says they're not doing it, they ain't doing this, you just look at it and say, there they are.
This is where they went.
There's your money. There's where it goes.
And once again, if you do not have a smoke detector in your house, this is a free service from the state of Tennessee and our volunteer fire departments. All you got to do is pick up the phone, make a scheduled time, and they will come install these things in your home for free. It's a free safety net for everybody in Coffee County, and we appreciate that you all do.
And even if they call the state, the state takes and emails me, name, address, and everything, contact information.
Good.
for us to set up and get them put in their house. Okay. They call the fire marshal's office, fire marshal's office, relays it all to us.
Yeah, everybody should take advantage of that. Yes.
I mean, it's smoke alarms save lives.
Yep. And it's already been in your battery life in them. If you don't tamper with the battery 10 years.
If you don't take them down, they're good for 10 years, most of them. In fact, we're coming into the cycle now to where we're replacing ones that we put in 10 years ago.
That's good.
So we're starting to rotate into the houses we've already done once before when the program first started.
It's probably the most single, most effective piece of equipment, machinery that the fire service has. When you pull up somewhere in the middle of the night and it's pitch dark at 3 o'clock in the morning and you hear smoke detectors going off, when you pull up and somebody's fixing to help somebody, you go... Because you know then that they're probably out of the house.
Out of the house, yeah.
But if you hear dead silent, Michael, it ain't good.
No. You don't hear an alarm going off, then either the alarm's defective or they don't have them. Scary. And that's the scary part.
Scary. All right. Anything else?
Any questions for me? Thank you, sir. Y'all are very welcome. Thank y'all.
Thanks for what y'all do.
Yes.
All righty. That being done, new business, as I was gonna bring up under new business, the smoke detector paperwork, you know, please, in the next cycle that we have, whoever gets the chair position, please keep up with that. And so after that being said, we're looking to set a time and date for the next meeting, and I'm thinking June 25th, a Thursday night.
Okay.
June 25th?
Mm-hmm. 6 p.m. And, you know, I don't know, I think last year, I don't know, last year getting into July, if we don't have much going on in July, we might not meet in July. Okay.
For vacations.
Yeah, a lot of people have got stuff going on.
Okay.
That all being said, I would entertain a motion to adjourn this meeting.
I'll make that motion.
Motion made by Mr. Morris. Seconded by Mr. Miller. All in favor of adjournment? Say aye.
Aye.
Let's have it. Thanks for being here, and thanks for all you do, you guys back there.
