We thank you for our elected officials, our mayor, our mayor pro Tim, our council. We pray God that you lead us, guide us, and direct us throughout this day. Continue to look over the management and every resident of our city. We ask these blessings in Jesus name I pray. Amen. Amen. We have no items for close session. Uh no public comment for close session. No, Mr. Mayor Pro.
Thank you. Uh no introduction presentations. We're now consent items. Nothing but discussion item number one. Uh consider discussion renaming of the Caesar E. Chavez Day tribute event and related recognition in the city of Carson, California. staff.
Uh thank you uh madame mayor, mayor pro Tim, uh council, this item was presented and as we have this special meeting for a discussion to be determined if there needs to be a renaming of this uh particular event from Caesar Chavez to something of which you all would decide uh collectively if there's to be a change at all. And so, uh, that's what this special meeting was called for by the mayor as well as, uh, her colleagues, you all, to determine what you'd like to do at this point. So, the floor will be back to you, Mayor Prom.
Thank you. Any discussion for my colleagues? Um, Mayor Prom. Yes. I uh will make a motion that we rename uh the city's uh tribute to Cesar Chavez to um United Farm Workers Dignity Day. Second. Any discussion? Yes. Is there uh is this name keeping in line with what the city of LA is doing? I like the title. It for me it sounds the same as what the what the LA city did.
City of LA. The city of LA. The same name, but they called it farm workers day. I think it was farm workers day. We ours is a little bit jewel jew. It's more jewel of the South Bay. More dignified. It's more lineified.
United Farm Workers dignity today. I like that. Uh to the staff, uh we need to get this information out to our public on all of our social media, everything else that our event will still take place, but it's going to be titled United Farm Workers Dignity Day. And uh we need to make sure that all of our programs that are out there that we submit uh I know today is Thursday. The event is Friday. Today, Tuesday? Today is I mean the event when is the event? The 27th. I think it's Saturday. Friday. Friday. Friday.
Yeah. Do we have time to get all the We should get all the information out to our residents. It is no longer Caesar Chavez that it is United uh former workers dignity today. And I also had requests that we held a press conference. Is it time too late to do that? Tomorrow morning. We'd have to check. I mean, we can we can put the request in there for the and we can definitely, you know, definitely do a invitation. We can definitely do a press release. Uh, but to do a press conference is probably going to be tight, but we we can try to put something together. Um, yeah, I'd like you to try and see if we can't do one tomorrow's Wednesday.
Okay, we'll talk. It's only 3:00. What do we say at the uh steady city camp means you won't? Well, I never said we won't, Madam Mayor. I just said I don't I don't know what kind of participation or we'll get but we'll we'll do our best to put something together
if we can and definitely do the press release get it out as soon as possible. Have all of our flyers changed uh to reflect that all the social media. I don't know. Uh it's too late to walk the entire Well, is it too late to print and walk the uh do the walk man? He Yeah, I I'd have to check with the walking man Metameir. We can find out and see. But that's that's going to be a tight turnaround for for them, I would I would imagine. But we'll we'll ask them because it's Friday. We need to get it on our mares. On our mar.
We can definitely get it on our mares. Definitely get it on our website. We can definitely uh put social media out. Um that's instant. That's not a problem. Uh the flyers, we can kind of get updated with the information. we can get that within the next hour to two. Um, as far as physical uh delivery to other residences, that that's going to be that would be the challenge along with the um press conference tomorrow, but we like said we're we're we got staff right now kind of digging into that, if you will.
Okay. If you can, those are the two things I'd like to happen. If not, we need definitely need to uh get flyers to all of our parks so they can post them um at all the parks that the tribute is taking place, but it's retitled uh the United Farms Dignity Day. Yes, we can definitely get those flyers to the parks for sure. That's that that won't be a problem. And then all of us, my colleagues, make sure you post this flyer on your social media uh and get get the word out. Okay, good idea,
Cindy. Well, we we will send the we'll send the media package uh to you, Madame Mayor, along with the rest of the council so you all can get that out through your aids or yourselves um to Sure. And we'll make sure they have the up the updated pieces for the Yeah. I I didn't want to cancel the event. I you know, I didn't want to make us to cancel. I just want to retitle. So I uh go along with the uh renaming of the event to the United Farm Workers Dignity Day. Thank you, Councilman Hilton.
Thank you, Mayor Pro Tim. Thank you, Madam Mayor. I was going to say uh should we um amend uh this and also at the same time change our holiday uh here at the city of Carson from Caesar Chavez Day to United Farm Workers Day. Can we do that in one swoop because we don't want that to except there's a friendly amendment. Good idea. We change everything. I just madame mayor comprehensive. You want it made it make for the record. For for the record. That's fine. And that's long as the maker of the motion accepted and Okay. Just wanted to make sure it was okay. We're keeping the holiday. We're keeping the holiday. But we just changing the name. Changing the name. I just request a clarification on that. Huh. I just want to clarify something.
I just want to make sure we can do that. Ben. Yeah. So, um, the it's a state holiday, Caesar E. Chavez Day. The state is has said the state lawmakers have said they're working on renaming it. City observes all state holidays. So, the state's going to be changing that name. And then at that point, the city would update it accordingly, unless you had an idea to have a different name than what the state might come to. They're they're planning to rename it farm workers day according to news articles. Well, maybe we can be be ahead of the state and uh and name Carson is the first city. We're more sophisticated in the state. Yeah.
So maybe we could call it farm workers day already. Just so we um this so that when we post our post outside or when the the the the A-frames are posted outside and people are closed, it doesn't say Caesar Chavez day. It says form workers day. So we wanted to do that so we can do that expeditially. Expeditiously because that's next week. Yeah. Correct. But you I if I don't understand I think you want to have the name of the holiday the same as the event right it should be the same farm workers dignity day that's what you want the holiday to replace the name so everything matches with the city of Carson correct okay I don't care if the state calls it something else they can okay just wanted to confirm
whenever that happens and we'll and we can always change it later we can come back later but right now right right now right now we're doing it because right now the The only place it's listed where it's actually written Caesar Chavez day is in theUS. So that would be the subject to negotiation with the the unions to update that. But you're not taking the day away. You're just changing the name. Right. Right. So theus currently list Caesar E. Chavez day. Um so when that when theus are updated, if you could provide direction to staff to when they update theus or when they should that be part of the motion as well? Yeah. To provide direction to staff to update theus. Uh I you know the maker of the motion and secondary agree that the city name
to add that as well. Yeah I agree that's a friendly amendment. You got that madam clerk. It should be comprehensive of course. Any other comments? Please cast your vote. Um yeah I guess we do it electronically muted oral from the mayor and MPT. Just for the record I don't think we had any public comment cards for No. No comment. No we did not. And there's no comments on Zoom either. Thank you for that, Madam Mayor. Can I get an oral vote to uh Yes. Thank you.
You still there, Madam Mayor? Oh, I said yes. You She said there. She said no. Your your picture jumped off the screen. That's all. We We thought you had left. You don't can't see me. Oh my goodness. Mr. Mayor Tim, the vote is unanimous. Thank you. Thank you for that. So, we officially have changed the name officially and we're going to do a press release and possibly do a press conference tomorrow if What time do you have in mind, Mhorm for the press conference? I'm trying to figure you around 10 o'clock or 11. Typically, we try to do 10:00 a.m. Um, but we're kind of at the mercy of the news news folks. We'll but we'll
you can't you can't do it Thursday, Wednesday or Thursday. Again, it's not until Friday. We It's probably going to be easier to do it on Thursday, Madame Mayor. Uh yeah, it doesn't have to. I just want it before the event. Oh, okay. Yeah, we'll but we'll we'll look and we'll ask for both days, but I think I think Thursday would be better. Yeah. Look at everybody's calendars available on that at that time. Well, everybody that can be there will be there. Everybody can't won't. Sounds like a plan to me. the 20s. We're gonna shoot we're gonna shoot for Thursday at 10 am, but I will we'll keep you posted as to what you cannot um we'll we'll look at the calendars and see what what times work for
Well, what's time for the uh news media also? Well, I mean that's number one. Yes, ma'am. Um and then we'll make sure your calendars right now 10 a.m. doesn't work for uh MPT. So, we'll look and see if there's either a 9 or 11. I don't know if that works for but we'll we'll look at your calendars. I'm already booked by something that the mayor had me to go to already. Happy to attend. Let's talk about it later. Okay. We'll we'll we'll let you know. Thank you.
Oh, I'm sitting up here giving out directions. I better check my calendar. You check it real quick. Madam clerk, do we have anyone speaking on matters not on the agenda? No, Mr. Mayor Pro. Thank you.
I'm available tomorrow at 10. I'm available. I'm available. I'll make myself available Thursday at 10 also. Does everybody else their calendar is clear or do they know that it's clear? 10 o'clock on Thursday. I guess you said Thursday. Not tomorrow. Not Wednesday, but Thursday. Thursday.
You guys can have a press conference. That's okay. Um it council matters uh request for items on the agenda for future agenda items. That's it. Any oral communications? Uh council members.
