My project was inspired by the historical ecological project shown by the Magoga San Francisco Institute of Science and Technology. This project was a combination of my interest in record storage, interest in history, and knowledge about the ecosystem of the Albany Hill. Thanks to this, I was able to learn more about the local history, especially the history of Albany, through record storage research. In addition, I used the knowledge I gained while working at the Albany Hill to learn about native plants and foreign plants, You can also learn how to use ArcGIS Online and StoryMap. The data I referred to to create the final result of the map was also an old terrain that shows the terrain of the record picture and Albany Hill. If you scroll down a little more and look at this map, this map, which I made with ArcGIS Online, predicts the appearance of Albany Hill before the 1890s. Click on the first red part over there. And the other small points on the map show landfills that are expected to have been on the hill at the time. And today's Edo still exists, but it's probably showing more prominent sites before urbanization and regional development. If you scroll down a little further, I also learned about the reason why there is a eucalyptus tree on the hill, and it was one of the really interesting facts. Simply put, the dynamite manufacturing plant that moved from San Francisco to Albany was right next to the hill, and there were frequent explosions, causing many people to lose their lives. However, people living on the other side of the hill suffered a lot of damage from the explosion. So, the dynamite manufacturing company decided to plant eucalyptus trees on the hill to play the role of a buffer zone between the explosion and the residents. And there is no more dynamite manufacturing there, but the eucalyptus tree remains as it is. Today, we learned that Edo is still under management. Through this process, it was really interesting to look at the process that we are now on the hill. If you scroll down a little more, there is one more map of the 1930s. This map is after the eucalyptus tree was planted and the cerito creek was turned into a waterway and straightened. There is still wetland, but it has been developed now. There is also a grassland, but the grassland area has decreased due to eucalyptus trees. In order to make this map, we were able to find satellite photos from the 1930s. The process of finding and collecting various materials to make the map was really interesting. And all the points you can click on here show the current landing species and foreign species there, allowing you to guess what species existed in the past. I am majoring in biology and environmental science, and today I am going to present my project about the Albany Hill soil test. First, I will briefly explain the characteristics of soil. Then, I'll explain the test site I found, the procedures I performed, and the soil measurement that I recommend based on the test results. Let's look at the next slide. The first thing we need to know about soil characteristics is the pH. The soil pH determines the activity of the soil microorganisms and the amount of soil that the plant absorbs. Generally, self-grown plants grow well in a low-to-medium-to-medium range, that is, pH 6 to 7. Organic biomass refers to the bio-mass of microorganisms that combine organic matter, compost, and soil particles into several aggregates. This is important because it promotes moisture absorption, nutrient release, and microorganism activity. Basically, it is the basis for all other soil characteristics. Ventilation and drainage allow air and water to move throughout the soil through soil supply, which is essential for the roots to breathe and function. Lastly, there are multi-nutrients and micro-nutrients. In this project, we focused only on multi-nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They are responsible for the growth, reproduction, and stress of plants. Carbohydrates support the formation, cell formation, and formation of protein compounds. This supports the formation, cell formation, and formation of protein compounds. Finally, potassium supports moisture balance, enzyme activity, and disease resistance. Look at the next slide. The second is the single-link infiltration system, single-link infiltrator experiment. This experiment measured the water penetration rate of soil. The third is the soil respiration experiment. This test measured the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by soil microorganisms based on the activity or decomposition of organic matter. The fourth test is the soil pH test, which uses vinegar and baking soda to check whether the soil is acidic or alkaline. Finally, the fifth test is the soil slurry test, which measured the amount or applicability of nutrients such as nitrogen, zinc, and potassium in the soil. Next slide. To show you my results, There is a page in my document on the right. You may not be able to see it well, but this is the result of a single-link penetration test that I carried out. It contains the data, the calculation of the data, and the final result. Based on this data, I summarized the possible score and the meaning of each score, and the soil measurement that I recommend as a table. On top of that, there is a color law or soil measurement guide to refer to the severity or level of each score. Next slide. Finally, to talk about environmental improvement measures, my manager and I took time to review appropriate improvement measures that L-Bone can apply to HEAL. Sustainability, natural, organic, that is, those that are not chemically synthesized. I will tell you how the interns felt during the summer. Olivia will start first. And we learned a lot about the various plant use methods that we didn't even think of from the MaGo and El Serito groups of the Urban Tilt team. We also learned about how the L-Burnie Heel, which is surrounded by natural areas in the city, especially residential areas, is managed by L-Burnie Heel, which is owned by several organizations. It was really interesting to see how all these elements were combined to influence the management of the hills and how they were able to directly check the long-term effects of restoration efforts by removing various weeds there during the summer. We were able to see for ourselves how much effort was made in a day. Also, listening to the stories of people who have worked on the hills for a long time, The work that started before is still in progress. For example, like eucalyptus, we could also learn how to continue to manage sprouting trees. I learned a variety of food and soil preservation methods. Food preservation methods are mainly weed management techniques. For example, I learned how to pick weeds with my hands, use a weed remover, and how to mulch a sheet. I learned how to use soil-protecting cloth as a soil preservation method, but I haven't tried it myself. We learned how to find seeds and native plants, and how to classify and breed them. I also learned how to breed them directly through field learning. Lastly, I think one of the most important feelings is the volunteer work in the local community. In particular, it was a great help to volunteer at UC Berkeley's Jepson Plant Farm or to participate in volunteer activities held by my friend Jimmy El Cerrito. Through these experiences, I learned how important it is to understand each other's different perspectives on various environmental knowledge and management methods. It's not just easy to get. If you compare the top of the hill or Nungsum and Chamnamu Forest, the soil types are clearly different and the amount of water or the amount of soil is different.
