So whenever this thing takes place I think it would be helpful to give information to our vice president as to the things that we think would be meaningful to make sure included in the information that's transferred to the new people as they come in And we know there's already an orientation process. We've all been through some form of that. I know yours was a little different because you kind of came midstream. But let's start thinking about how that can be more complete, more robust, and then we can continue that conversation.
okay thank you this this card is wonderful thank you for do you want a bunch more I know we know that the research that it's been done over I don't know looking at as far back as what 2010 to 2015 when we saw increased screen time for eighth to 12th graders. I know there's a study here, I had to pull it up, like half a million eighth through 12th graders when they looked at screen time and the increase in suicide rates for girls and pretty clear it's correlative right but they're even thinking about causation so what are we what are we doing to help parents understand the balance of how they…
Well, some parent groups have already, I wish I could tell you the name of the groups, but they've signed pacts. Like there's a group of parents at BA that have signed a pact about reducing screen time and, you know, just for their children's well-being. Yeah. So anything, because in the same way that we try to, about good diet, you know, any of the things about good well-being activities. We can't separate this because a kid that's, you know, there's not that personal interaction with their peers, there's just, we know what the results are.
I mean, anything we can do to help educate parents, because the generation now that is raising these kids, you know, they're locked in with the screens, so they can't step outside of that.
Could you just remind us and anybody watching this meeting that the community services, that they stand alone? Just kind of re-say that.
sure so what are you feeling what what is our budget feeling with the increased cost and diesel fuel are we that I mean I'm looking at it here you know I'm seeing student transportation compared to last year to this year are we getting hammered there or not necessarily? Well, I would say probably, but I don't have that specific number.
probably pretty clear we're not lucky for us we're not a district in the up that has just a massive area geographical area that we have to cover but even so and luckily we have some electric buses too yes we do yeah thanks
I just remember working in the legislature and seeing year after year how they would change the weight and you know the fall and the spring. So who made this decision and was it voted on? I mean how does this happen?
So as if schools don't have enough trouble trying to figure out our budget, and then they throw these things at you at the last minute. This is just, yeah. But they set you up for problems.
Congratulations on all your hard work. Absolutely. Because it's a lot.
I move that we proceed to vote on all of them as a package. You're moving to approve them all? Move to approve all of them, yes, together.
So to clarify, Trustee Norton, you were talking specifically about the article that was listing schools.
No, I agree with you, too, and I... you know I was in a meeting of zoom meeting with trustees basket and president Feaster with the author and we said you know there's a process it's going to be very involved it's going to involve the community we're going through our strategic planning process and no particular schools were identified I think what's frustrating is that these rumor mills start where people go oh well this I heard somebody say this one and then it takes on a life of its own and You know, people just sit tight, allow the process to work. I just want to commend our curriculum…
Yes, we met on September 10th at 4 p.m. The information will be shared this evening looking at test scores across the district.
I think it's probably worth mentioning now at this juncture. When, and if you said it, I was focused on something else maybe. When we have these different categories, people can be in more than one.
I appreciate this report. We've seen a lot of them. I've seen a lot of them throughout my career. I can't talk enough about literacy can't sit in a silo. The literacy program allows a student to access the rest of the curriculum, and that includes math. because there's so much more reading and math in the way we are teaching it and helping students understand numerics, right? So there is a school district in Ohio, Steubenville, and people can Google this and read about them. I've heard a couple podcasts about Steubenville. It's in a Rust Belt school. It's a Rust Belt school district. And…
are we're not there we're not there and I know that you know some suggest in the research up to 20 of our students are just have dyslexia which you know it's an umbrella you can be very severely dyslexic and not and I know we're taking steps yeah to get people trained but I just can't There, I mean, when I taught at Scarlet, I got kids in sixth, seventh grade, could hardly read at all, and they were dyslexic. And once they were given the proper, you know, trained instruction, I mean, I have one little boy that went off his IEP for ninth grade, and it was like, That I, we, I feel like that is…
Just wondering, I know that, of course, AI is in the news, you know. I know that we had a group come and present to us a And the spring, maybe? I would like to see what's happening in that regard. What do you guys think? Are you interested? I'm interested.
Well, I know that I talked to one of the teachers that's in that group, and it was like they wanted to start gathering information from parents or something, but they were waiting to get something from us, and maybe they were going to present again. I don't know. What's the status of things?
Just status report of all aspects, I guess, because I know they've still, I think they still have a working group. Superintendent Parks, do they still have that group together, I suspect? I mean, maybe a few of the students graduated, but just to see what's happening.
They're following. Yeah, that's part of that.
They've got their finger on the pulse, I think.
I think that's a great idea because you've got a lot of experience leaving our most experienced member. We need to capture that. We need to capture that historical knowledge. And I'm sure that I wouldn't be surprised, and it's all preliminary, of course, because you don't have the new members, but there will be some carryover and there might be some expertise at MASB that some framework that they, I mean, this happens to other boards too. Yeah.
I want you to drop an email to us to see who can come early. Yeah. Okay. That sounds good. We can check their calendar.
