“Well, you can say you feel possibly that way, but to make a statement that, has she had a conversation with you about being bullied?”
“Well, you can't listen to all whistle blowers. With that I yield.”
“All right. This is what I have to say about the whole issue with this budget. My understanding was leadership had a meeting with the mayor to talk about the budget. school department finance team met with the mayor with the city's finance team now to be perfectly honest with you i never got a call from anybody in leadership to say we met with the mayor and this is what we're looking at so far this is what's happening so i'm hearing a lot through the grapevine so i'm going to throw the grapevine out and you people who are all here can tell me what's true what's not and where we move from here…”
“So maybe if you can all clarify that for us so that we can then take a vote.”
“Well, one of the things we spoke about at the ordinance committee, which counselor proposed the chairs, and he had put in you know so let's have an ad hoc committee with certain members of the council certain members of the school committee to keep an eye on that so if that's going to happen as well I think that would be helpful to both sides and you would know you'd be able to discuss the transportation issue there so are you saying that if we give the $16,650,000, but that you needed more, do you have faith that we would be able to give you more? At that point, Emily, would we be able to…”
“I think you can. If you can get it later, you can get it now. Am I wrong?”
“Not if you take it from investments, from the interest in investments.”
“And you might not have that. And I'm not talking about what we're going to do for next year. I'm talking about right now. You can't get $450,000 to make them whole at $17 million.”
“I don't care where you get it. Is that $450,000? I mean, I look at some of the hirings that have been done. I look at some of the raises that have been given to certain people within City Hall that if we're tight, I think that some of those raises...”
“I'm going to yield and let some of my colleagues have a chance. Thank you. You're saying you could do it with the $16,650,000 as long as you know that another $450,000 would be available and you can start out with that. Do you know through transportation now We do not.”
“And I agree that transportation is critical because we do want to make sure that our students”
“Can we table this meeting and come back? I mean.”
“Is this just because of the school for Diamond?”
“It's for the new school. Should it be from September to June? No.”
“Because in the summertime, they're not back and forth. I get the traffic.”
“I know Superintendent Bentley has told teachers not to park there and students not to park there because it's an easier way when they get out of school to run to their car.”
“All right. I just think if you did it during the school year, or do you just think that people will get accustomed to it and never park there? What's your take on it? I'm sure that it's...”
“I would second that. I make a motion we amend that to have from June 30th to September 1st.”
“So not just the times that you can possibly have, the times you can't. Okay, I agree.”
“From September to June, these are the ordinances.”
“Of doing this for six families, five families, and six families. Okay, so I have a single family home. I have a two family home. I pay my taxes. My trash gets picked up. She's got a five family home, you've got a six family home, you gotta pay. You pay your taxes, but you've gotta pay for your trash too. I don't think that's equitable, I don't think that's fair. I think the bottom line is, and nobody's gonna like it, but I'm gonna say it, we need to do something with trash citywide. The city's budget cannot afford, what's your contract that you're working on? I heard it's between nine and 11…”
“If you own a condo, you're paying a fee, a monthly fee, for everything, for somebody to come and take care of the lawn, for somebody to shovel the snow, and for somebody to pick up the trash. Yeah, you pay for everything. That's what a condo fee is. I understand. I get it. If you don't want to do that, you don't buy a condo. No, I get that. Because you know that that's in there. I just think this is unfair. To me, I like the three strikes and you're out, whoever it is. You're not putting your trash out the way you're supposed to. You get three notices. After the third notice, they empty the…”
“What is that? No, not Capitol Hill. Crapo. When they went to Crapo, because they were going to Republic right in Fall River on Airport Road, a truck would go by, dump, come back. Now they have to go up to Crapo, come back. They have to buy another truck or two to keep it going where they have trash out by 5 o'clock. I mean, I've been talking to trash people for a long time, but we need to bite the bullet and do something. This city budget cannot afford to take $11 million out of the budget just for trash. I mean, my colleagues talk about things like our clerks don't get paid enough. You know,…”
“However it goes, it goes. But the call I received, and I think Councilor Dion probably received the same one, a woman who lives in a six-family, every unit has one person. She puts out one barrel for trash and one recycling every week. So is it going to be cheaper for her to get somebody to come and pick it up?”
“Well, I'm more from the point of if people are not disposing things the way that they should and they're getting cited, then you empty the trash that third time and remove the barrel, then they have to go do it. So everybody is being treated the same way. I have a single family home and what if I'm living with I mean, I have somebody who the daughter and three children moved in with the parents. They want another barrel. They really can't get a barrel, whatever. One of the kids is in diapers. But if they're not recycling, they're going to get penalized. and the barrel will be removed. Yes,…”
