“John, if an outside company came to Gilroy and said, we want to build this great big swimming pool in the middle of residential, would we let them do it? I guess it depends on the circumstances. I can answer that. There's no way we would let them do it because of the noise, the parking, just all kinds of stuff.”

“From the first meeting I was at with the consultants, they were against it and they didn't want to talk about it and they didn't want to hear about it. Wheeler Auditorium has a lot of significance to the people of Gilroy. And I believe the only way you will get a bond measure to do anything is if it includes Wheeler Auditorium.”

“From the last time we talked about this, I want to make sure that it's going to happen. No fee and no signatures, right? That's what we agreed to at our meeting.”

“Looking through the staff report, it says that projects like this are approved by right.”

“And then it also goes on to say that normally what you've seen in other cities is the city doesn't know it's there until it opens and it's already operational.”

“But they don't need our permission, right?”

“Yeah, this seems purely symbolic to me, and it, What really concerns me is that it gives folks a false sense of security. We've seen it all over the United States where community members go out and protest and get in the face of ICE officers because they think they're not supposed to be out there because they have an ordinance or something. And that really concerns me because, you know, people never... seem to take the time to get the whole story. They go by what they read online or what somebody told them. Excuse me. And they take that as that's the rules now. And it doesn't work that way.…”

“Okay, sorry, go ahead then. I'm sorry. And I think that... as we've seen in other communities, if you challenge ICE, they're going to show up right now. We're not on their radar. And I think we should stay off their radar and not intimidate them.”

“COMMISSIONER BRACCO. On the north end of town, Do we use county fire most of the time there out of their San Ysidro station?”

“And is the Treehaven station, is it staffed all the time now?”

“Chief, so if you contract with someone for fire service, the city would still be responsible for the equipment and the fire stations? Correct. And then if you go with the annexation, It would be off of our, off of us completely.”
City Council · Sep 16, 2026
- Play at 1:40:36
“So under annexation, would we still have some kind of like a contract to govern... Who's responsible for what? You know, say, like, an example is our ambulances. We're supposed to have them down here, but they're not sometimes. What can we do if we went with annexation and all of a sudden our firehouses are empty and our trucks are in San Jose?”

“Well, we really don't have a representative at the county.”

“Yeah, I agree with a lot you said, Mr. Mayor. This deserves more conversation, but I want to see... hard facts. You know, what's it going to cost, you know, to go ahead and reach out to the county, get a price. What's it going to cost? What are we going to have to do to the stations? You know, find out exactly what it's going to take, what it's going to cost, what we can expect. And I think we need to reach out to, as we've seen with this data center, we need to reach out to the community. because I don't think they're gonna be very happy about it, or they may be, hopefully they will. And…”

“Yes, I have a report on the library. I just wanted to let everybody know the Dolly Parton Imagination Library has been a huge success. Since January, we have 8,063 new kids have signed up. And Santa Clara County leads. We're at the top of the list. The next county is Monterey, and they're only at 2,700. So the Imagination Library is doing very well. And we have 22,234 kids have signed up for the Imagination Library since January. So it continues to grow and it's doing well. And the library district has recently partnered with the Sharks. So if you need a library card or you want to just trade…”

“Sorry. Matt. What could we do about the management of Camp Hope? I know we don't have anybody specifically for that position. But can we do something in-house where we go and inspect it once a week or every other week or whatever it would take and try to keep it clean and get the people to pick up around there and do what they said they were going to do?”

“Well, since we're, our subcommittee is wrapping up, I would propose that we go ahead and have Matt deal with getting it cleaned up, and then we'll be coming back with a recommendation from the subcommittee and then take it up then and make a decision on a long-term plan of what we want to do.”
